If it were really true that "that Redmond is as at least cheap and as secure as its open-source rival and to spread the word that Windows is better than Linux", then would they have to spend so much money to tour the contry telling people so? Wouldnt the product speak for itself?

Thank you for the info - I just got this email today. I replied all just now and sent those links.
To be totally honest- I try to use vi whenever i can. reasons:
- If you code something in a dreamweaver like app, it tends to add other junk to the code - like ^M at the end of every line, and also messes up any spacing you had.
- The ability to use some of the mapping in vi allows you to make changes to the html much faster (even the use of the . command has made coding groups of things much much quicker than copy and paste, in my opinion)
At first...VI sucked. Now I really dont want to do any programming / html without it. (commands, macros, regex, oh my!!):) Happy html'ing.
As someone learning to program now, and as someone who is learning to really ENJOY creating clean code, this article is somewhat disturbing. If hiring managers and HR do not recognize the value of an experienced C++ (or any) kind of programmer, then what is my incentive to learn to become so, other than as a hobby?
I know the answer for me: I will continue down the path of the coding Pai Mei (kill bill 2!) - I do what I do for honor, and because it is right, and no other reason.
But...damn that sucks they arent going value me any more for it!
I agree...but more importantly, why would you pay 9.99 for a new text game, when you could go and probably find one of those old text games (hhgttg!) and convert them? And a couple people probably will, and when they do, you can probably just download them for free if you dont feel like doing it yourself!:)
oh GREAT! Lets just go and revive ancient bacteria that could be a deadly virus! What a lovely idea! Thats it - those NASA guys are off my tea-party list!
I know I am being quite ignorant - but wasnt there a huge lawsuit that shut down many of the indipendent internet radio stations? Is this any different, or is the key that you are not allowed to stream copyrighted material? I am just hoping that this will bring back a lot of the indie stations that I used to listen to back in the day (grrl radio) that played a good mix of indie, and the good popular stuff (radiohead, tool, the sundays, the smiths, etc).
If you have total control of your NOC, I would personally start with your servers - move those PDCs and BDCs over to Linux using Samba. Do this slowly, using the "soft rollout" technique. Move a small portion of the workstations over to the Linux servers gradually. Once you get all of your windows desktops looking to linux to get files and for any ldap, you can then begin adding linux desktops without fear of conflict. I dont really see a point in moving all of your desktops over to linux and keeping windows servers - it will be cheaper to run linux on those. Usually most companies keep the windows desktops for users and switch over the servers to linux for cost / maintanance reasons.
Just my thoughts though - if you are entrenched by politics and upper management, this will be tough for you no matter what. Just try to make those you dont have control over understand the reasons for Linux, provide them with TCO reports from independent sources. (i.e. not from Redhat and MS)
(Three of the four Xbox ads shown this holiday will feature women or girls in them.)"
Well, sorry to be the one to point this out, but could that be because it will help sell the product to men / boys? Just like all other products, throwing a pretty girl in the commercial usually ups sales.
Yes, this reminds me of the cell phone licensing plan. You start out with something nice - "only 10$ per month!". And then it kind of snow balls from there... "if you want to turn your phone on, you need to buy this adapter thingy, and pay 2$ per month", "by the way, dont forget 10$ per month on taxes", "oh, you wanted CALLER ID?? that comes in package 6426-6.2 and you have to say 'add cid', its another 7.98 per month, unless that month contains 4 thursdays, then its 9.99".
I have not gotten an audiobook yet, but I have been eyeing them for a couple of days now. I will probably purchase one before the end of the week. Reccommend any good books?
The Movie Anti-Trust used Gnome exclusivly throughout the movie. The interfaces that you see that are not the gnome desktop are still running on linux - Miguel de'icaza, credited for have founded the Gnome project, makes a guest appearance in the movie as well, offering some computer science award to Ryan Phillippe.
Interesting that one of the cornerstones of a civilized society is the ability to quickly and effectivley communitcate in a meaningful way. Yet our society seeks to stifle this with licences, fees, and administrvia that continue to errode our communication capabilities...for the sake of what...profit?
What about all those magazines, posters and concerts she will never buy because of this?
Most regular people dont think this way. I am not sure if it is because they just arent bright, or because they have been so brainwashed, I leave that up to you to determine.
Anyhow, most people are left with a feeling of defeat and overwhelming since of "smallness".
Thought process: Corporations are so huge. I cant make a difference. How can I live without their products? All my friends have CDs and posters and watch 20 + hours of tv / week. I will not be normal if I avoid buying "whats cool this week"..... Maybe I am just a pessimist, but I give her about zero chance of not buying RIAA products like all the other teenage lemmings when it is her time.
I agree, where are they...I dont know. Many of my favorites went down when the fees started...I hate the RIAA. I will continue to pirate my music because we are at a complete impass. I refuse to work with them, and they refuse to work with me.
This is up to the distro owner, in my opinion. There is no standard "Linux" install, you run a distro. And the most popular is probably Redhat, and they DO have a standard look and feel, called blue curve. I think they have done an excellent job with it for the end user, and even though I do not care for it personally, I still have a choice to go download and configure a different WM. Redhat will continue to improve on their standard look and feel, and I always look forward to newer editions to see what they have made better.
Think about it..what is the difference between an MMORPG, and a game you play on your console at home? The thounsands of other people that make up the "world" you play in online combined with the immersive experience of playing in that world. That is what should be a MAIN attraction in online gaming. Of course, the content provider cannot dictate the quality of those playing the game, but they can help with:
*Limitless ammounts of clothing and items to make you unique in a crowded world *Countless communication options (from chat, to emotes, etc) to allow for meaningful conversation and roleplay.
Of course there is always a tactical and gameplay component to these games, and to some this is the only reason for playing. But that will not keep people coming back alone, or else you are out of the game as soon as a better action packed game comes along, or the current one gets old (and it will sometime).
In my opinion, the social atmosphere is the only reason to continue to play MMORPGs for an extended period of time. I think many roleplayers would agree!
yup - the mindshare works. About 10 years ago before I heard of unix and linux and all that good stuff, I thought anything not windows was a very cheap imitation brand x - and we as americans generally shy away from brand x as being not as good, and not as hip. I often wondered why MS did advertisements - who were they competing against? who did they need to get the word out to?
I guess part of my point was....its a damn shame it has to be that way. You have to hire someone in order to TALK to someone else. This country makes no sense...
Do you have to have a lawyer for that, or could you save the 200$ (and buy an iPod!) and say to the judge yourself "your honor, I move to delay this case until the outcome of SCO vs IBM has been determined"? 200$ is better than paying up, but I dont see why you need a lawyer to do that for you.

Finally, someone with something intelligent to say about the matter!
You elitist, intellectual bastard! You are certainly off my team-time list.

According to the article, your bacon and eggs would become part of the pan's surface, so it would be SUPER sticky.

will vlc play wmv files? This is the only thing I seem to be missing.
I can see the terrorists licking their lips at this one all the way over here!!

Of course there is a way...the social atmosphere.
