The Cringe (Bob X. Cringely) contested this with a simple argument in his column a while ago. Because Sequent documented the technology they developed in a generic way, not in terms of their specific implementation within Dynix (read the RCU paper here, for instance), it was possible to write a cleanroom implementation for almost any OS (even non-quasi-Unices).

The fact that it was partly written by the same talent in both Dynix and Linux is irrelevent, as the cat was already out of the bag.

As far as JFS is concerned, SCO can pound sand. The JFS patch for Linux wasn't even based on AIX code - it came from OS/2.

    1) Some people just object to typing. I don't understand this. Typing is an efficient way to interface.
    2) e.g. Debian docs are usually provided on CD. No network involved (Slakware too).
    3) Linux is better because we have superior choices for many pieces of software. FYI, both Xine or MPlayer support more formats of video than any Windows-only player I can think of (of course, MPlayer works on Windows, too).
    4) Outlook Express has big holes in it _today_. Still. My BulkBox has the worms to prove it.

I don't think it's a good idea for Debian to totally divest itself of non-free software. The fact remains that non-free software is useful for large numbers of people. It would irritate them if they were too greatly inconvenienced.

I am not, however, disagreeing with this post. I think it would be beneficial for Debian to concentrate exclusively on a core composed of free software. I'm simply stating that any offshoot of Debian dealing with non-free software must cooperate closely with the core project to be successfull, and vice versa.

Here's another thought, and it's essentially costless: lobby upstream developers whose software is non-free to relicense DFSG compliant. The worst they can say is no.
