I remember seeing one of the first (real) webcams come online in 1992/3 (it was of Niagra Falls). It was very impressive back then; new pictures every minute. ;) Now there are hundreds of streams available at any hour of the day (Rob, not that kind of stream... :))

    A T1 was fast.
    Linux wasn't even built.
"NetMeeting" type stuff was new. Remember cuseeme? The original? Before they started charging?
Online gaming was mostly terminal-based, almost no graphical games.
Music on the PC? Cee Dee quality? No. Besides, it would have eaten up all of those 40-120MB drives. ;)

Since the editors of Slashdot love bashing MS, can't they at least learn of NT's vulnerabilities before posting them? Anyone who knew something about NT would have spotted that was old before reposting it.

And there will be nothing to stop them from doing this as long as they release the "AOL Linux Distribution" source. And who's going to download that? Think about it: No Microsoft, open source so that they can put AOL everywhere in the OS...

Some people who know nothing about computers have heard about Linux, and if they haven't, you had better bet the marketing spinners at AOL can sell it to them.

After all, if it's made or sponsored by AOL, it has to be the best. Or so some people believe. Almost everyone has heard of AOL. And many people believe that it really is "number one."

This system will make or break Nintendo (at least the Nintendo we all know now...)

Sure, they could fall back on the GameBoy, but they can't keep doing that forever. The GameCube is such a huge investment on Nintendo's part. Five years of research for a product that would never hit shelves? The investment is too big. Nintendo will have to produce the console either way.

What we're seeing is mega-companies entering the console arena. Sony and Microsoft, of course, are the two bigger ones. They both have more marketing power, more money, and they can afford to take a risk. The PSX isn't going to break Sony, and well, we know the X-Box, if it flops (which it won't, courtesy of the Microsoft hype), won't break the Borg-type company that is Microsoft. The bigger companies can fall back on the other things that they produce. Nintendo and Sega, as well as the smaller console-only (and in-house game development) companies don't have that much to fall back on. Their work is only games.

We're seeing the end of the companies that truly pioneered console gaming.
