  5. Re:Missing something... on Academic Journal on Computer Games · · Score: 2, Insightful

Art is a very subjective thing (disclaimer)

But usually one would note the difference between artwork and popular culture/entertainment. For instance, although the talent level is often of the same level, most people will differentiate between comic books and "gallery" art. Same thing with novels. Most people would like to seperate Tom Clancy from Ernest Hemmingway.

Computer games require alot of talent to create in every facet, from the story of Myst to q2dm1, but still remain an elaborated fantasy for the purpose of entertainment.

Unfortunately the area between art and entertainment is often hazy because viewing and interpreting art is considered entertainment. Perhaps the best distinction for me between art and entertainment is the goal. Does a computer game intend to comment or question life/humanity/etc? Or does it seek to entertain?

  8. Re:AI is a tool on A.I. and the Future · · Score: 1

I think the very nature of intelligence, as we associate it with artificial intelligence, eliminates it from the "tool" category. With Artificial intelligence we give a machine the ability to learn, adapt, and ultimately create.

    A tool by definition is:
something (as an instrument or apparatus) used in performing an operation or necessary in the practice of a vocation or profession- Webster

A computer that can create and apply its creation on its own, is not a tool, for it does not require assistance, it is not being used. I believe you are associating human created analysis programs with the concept of artificial intelligence. A monitoring program, a data analysis program (even an adaptive one), and a state machine based response does not ultimately qualify as AI. AI, as in the Spielburg movie, revolves around a "consciousness", or a cognitive ability to create and conclude.

Furthermore, imho when AI is achieved, it will eventually rise to a role as a member of society. Whether or not this is to be a feared conclusion, I will not attempt to guess.

  9. Re:Digital Rights Management vs. Free Software on Scott Handy Tells What's Up With IBM and Linux · · Score: 1

Most software is not widget-based, but, most software is a product, not in-house. For instance, the software i am producing right now is a specialty industrial piece of software, running at a couple grand per license, despite its small size and relative simplicity.

Anyway, just to clarify, I am in complete support of Open Source. I love it. But I do not agree with some of the premises of Free Software (thoug the parent of my earlier response nicely responded and cleared up some things for me). I think that some software should be completely open source and free (operating systems!). These are essential pieces of software where knowledge should be shared. Applications on the other hand, are exactly what they say they are... applications of software to problems faced by the end user. These applications must be developed, and in this (unfortunately) capitlist society, the only way something like that is gonna get done on a regular, efficient, and consistent basis is if someone is paid.

heh.. thats my opinion, and i'm stickin by it :)

  10. Re:Digital Rights Management vs. Free Software on Scott Handy Tells What's Up With IBM and Linux · · Score: 1

I think Handy had no intention of addressing the issue of Free Software. Free Software is an idealist philosophy, not accepted by most people (especially those of us who plan on/are making a living coding!).

    *opinion*
End users at the moment, and probably for a long time, are not capable of making full use of a computer without a diluted interface. To clarify, there will always be a need for a programmer to prepare the tools, and an end user to use the tools. For an end user to create, or even to have control over a tool implies that the tool is insufficient and thereby not a tool, or that the end user needs a new tool to be designed.
    *opinion*

What Handy does do is talk about relevant issues, and I think he addressed them quite well.

  11. Independant labels on MP3.com Summit - The Music Revolution is Over · · Score: 4

There seems to be alot of talk about how the music industry is corrupt, and bands are selling out.. blah blah blah. Well, prior to the 90s, there was independant music, and mainstream crap. In the 90s the music industry latched onto a couple independant genres, cannabalized them, removed any anti-corporate/motivational things from them, stuffed them with crap/boob jobs/pretty boys, shrink wrapped them, and mass marketed them. (Examples: rap, punk, trance)

The independant music scene still thrived, but was under closer watch, and a bit frightful of good bands selling out. Now, finally, the music industry has moved on to concentrating on pop.

Independant music is still thriving. Mp3.com only added a new vehicle for independant bands to release music. Overall, though, the independant bands on independant labels will have to continue to work the bar/club scene, gaining followings. Thats just the way it is and will be. Thankfully.

  14. Standardless communication on MS, CNET On 7-Day Messenger Outage · · Score: 1

Perhaps its finally time for the big fat software makers to adhere to some universal standard on the messaging front. I have heard of some universal instant messanging protocol standards being created, but until they gain widespread popularity, the instant messaging (imho just as important a feature of the net as email) giants (msn, aol) will continue to not only keep isolating their messenging networks, but also taking more liberties in terms of monitoring more communication and flooding users with more ads.

Perhaps due to the internet boom, or perhaps in response to open source, companies seem to be getting more and more headstrong about sticking with proprietary protocols. :P I wish people would realize that communication requires a universal language, be it English, http, ip, smoke signals, etc... The first thing a conqueror does is remove the open communication channels.

  15. sci - fi movies & quality on SCI FI Channel To Produce Dune Sequel · · Score: 2

The NY times had an interesting, somewhat related article on Sunday discussing the overall lack of quality of the stories of Science Fiction movies (quality referring to the depth of the characters, theme.. etc). I thought of this article when reading this interview. Dune as a whole, to me, is several rungs higher in depth as a science fiction epic. (right up there with Asimov's Foundation series). Its a real pity that scifi epics like Dune arent given the same budget as scifi soaps such as Star Wars(although the soaps are not bad, jsut not intellectually stimulating).

Case in point: Most people who learn OO from a book (*most*) do not understand the concept fully and/or do not design accordingly.

No, i dont think you understand what communism is. Valentine's day is a creation of pure Capitalism -> it was devised (true story) in the early 20 th century to sell greeting cards, chocolate, and roses.

You rant about hippies and liberals as if they were the ones behind this monstrous marketing ploy, when in fact it is the right wing corporate types who devise these schemes. In fact, liberals are staunchly opposed to pathetic brainwashing of the masses, such as Valentine's day, where people FORGET the fact that they should show there loved ones love all year round, and do not need a pathetic pink card tattooed with corporate logos (Hallmark), and a box of third rate chocolates sold for a ridiculous amount of money, which ultimately make your loved one fatter anyway!

Do not toss around words you do not understand, it is a sign of no education && no intelligence.
