Indeed. I've wondered for quite awhile if at least a certain percentage of the most obnoxious trolls on this site aren't people trying to FORCE us all to read at +1 default.
I know there are those out there who resent the presence of the A.C. posting privledge, and that some of them will do whatever they can to terrorize the people who read this site into not looking at A.C. posts.
It's a 'tragedy of the commons' situation, and just a smaller version of the breakdown of the consensus model on which the 'Net as a whole is based.
I've for some felt there is a need for more fairness in the electronics industry with regard to static issues.
We have tons and tons of resources thrown at the 'anti-static' problem. I would propose that all facilities be required to provide an pro-static work area. Two possible arrangements come immediately to mind:
1. Electronic workbenches with a worksurface composed of cat's fur. The hand tools should all be made of glass.
2. Electronic workbenches made with a worksurface composed of steel. The hand tools should all be made out of flint.
Employees who work at either type of facility should be encouraged to wear polyester clothing, and shoes with teflon soles, of course.
There's been a clear anti-static bias in the industry for far too long, and it's time for that to change.
Hey TWM is alright. It's what I run on my Mac SE/30. Anything more than that just crowds anything useful off the screen. (let's see YOU run KDE or Gnome on a 512x348 display!)
I guess you've never heard of single chip microcontrollers with mask ROM in them, eh?
For any mass market device where security is a concern, you will NOT be able to update the ROM.
If you don't believe me, here's a quick excercize for you to complete: reprogram the embedded controller in your microwave oven so that the display is in hexadecimal units.
You're beaming your 13 year old daughter's cellphone conversations through my house, my property.
Why shouldn't I be able to intercept it and put up a real-audio server on my website to broadcast it to any pedophile willing to pay my subscription fees?
If you carefully re-read his (admittedly poorly worded) comment, I think you will find you can have confidence in moving into that nice three-bedroom Victorian. Just don't move the three kilos of hashish down in your basement into it.
I'm more concerned about his treasonous behavior with regard to China than I am about where he plants his wick. I'm more concerned about all the coverups, all the scandals. All the Arkanside.
When you say 'hardware obsoletes in 6 months' you are talking about PC hardware, a totally different distribution channel than console game hardware. Sure, console game hardware becomes obsolete too, but not on the same track.
I think you meant to type 'crawl' up there in at least a few places where you typed 'run'.
That's when you walk over to your other machine and telnet into the machine with a locked up console.
Or you can leave a serial port open to login on, if you're really uptight about security on the box.

Last night. Did you miss the article?
Most of us have already downloaded the new tarball.

It sounds to me like you primarily hate Microsoft, and make that the basis for anything else in life.
That's pretty pathetic, you know.
Isn't recompiling the kernel a daily cron task in most distributions by now??
I still use W2K and Linux, too. I stopped sitting at a Linux desktop shortly after I bought eXceed, which is my Window Manager of choice.
But I use my last Linux box (a Slackware system) less and less these days. It's just not as clean an implementation of Unix as NetBSD.
I wouldn't be without any of the OSes I run on my various machines, of course. They all have their value.
Don't worry: Multiple trojaned versions of Kernel 2.4.0 will be available on Freenet within two days.
Are you seriously implying it's an either/or choice???
A 'multimedia player' does not, and should not be implemented in the kernel layer.
The instability that would result would be staggering.
My Macs all have NetBSD installed on them.
(Quadra 800, IIci, SE/30)
5.5 volts? What's the extra .5 volts for? Does a series protection diode in the power line so eat up the extra voltage?

Why should I not get a better picture because of some basterd making lame copy protection that violates my right to fair use?
Because they can?
Do you have a 'right' to access to the creative output of Movie and Television studios?
Do pornography customers have 'fair use' access to a good view of your bedroom when you're bonking your wife/girlfriend?

Your Linux kernel produces usable core dumps?
Mine doesn't.

Looking at this Excellent Summary Page over at NetBSD's home, it looks like you're still out of luck.
Nearly anything will run NetBSD, though.
(speaking of Linux games): I want to see Koules take off as a game.
It's (afaik) a unique game idea, it's as fun as heck, but it seems to only run on Linux (and OS/2?).
Maybe I should offer a reward to the first person who ports Linux to my Hitachi Electric Rice Cooker.
The BSOD is almost always evoked due to crummy plug-in hardware or substandard device drivers powering therof.
Since this will be a sealed-unit/closed-architecture device, you won't see any BSODs on it.
