Russia is well-known for highly poisonous rocket exhaust, especially from the PROTON rocket. I seem to remember this being used recently. Does anyone know if this is true and whether the launch vehicles Australia purchased might be using something similar?
What kind of lamer moderated this to Score:5? As opposed to USA, Russia uses liquid-fuel rocket engines that are both more reliable and environment friendly (if this term applies to rockets) than their American solid-fuel counterparts.
If you click around the Amazon web site you'll find "Our Customers' Private Info" amoung other Amazon stores. As usual, the prices are quite reasonable.
Clarification: First human being in space and first human being to orbit the Earth was the same person on the same date (Gagarin, Apr 12 1961).
As for the reusable spacecraft, Russians built it (it's called Buran) tested it and used it for a while. It turned out to be more expensive than the disposable spacecrafts, so they don't use it any more.
If I wanted to make money off of open source software, I would take *BSD, use it in my closed-sourced (or open source, but not redistributable) product (Like Mac OS X for Intel and Alpha). Eazel thought they would make money selling something that's virally free. Chumps.
12. artificial intelligence has exceeded human intelligence (note: im not taking into account the effects of singularity here either.)
This is a very important point. We can only predict things that will happen up to the point when AI exceeds HI (Human Intelligence), such as vastly improved productivity of companies and individuals that get their hands on AI first and usurp the world.
I already gave FreeBSD a shot. Everything was annoying me. Where are the SysV start-up scripts?
How come ls --color=yes doesn't work? (Different ls version). Why does "top" average CPU usage over the last minute? I mean the time resolution of human eyes is much faster than that. I could handle 1second averages like on Linux. I also enjoyed scrolling up and down in Linux console (the one you get with Ctrl-Alt-#) That didn't work in FreeBSD. Packaging system: how do you uninstall them in FreeBSD? On RH it's just rpm -e package.
I hope everyone agrees that FreeBSD installer sucks.
In conclusion, after using IRIX for several years and Linux for over a year both at home and at work, I found FreeBSD to be somewhat backwords.
FreeBSD is far and away superior to Linux on the x86 platform (this isn't a debateable point...I could go on for hours about why freebsd is superior)
I'd be genuinly interested in hearing why. You don't have to go on for hours. Just make half a dozen valid points. Please don't repeat the usual trite like it has cleaner code, it's truly free, and there's only ONE distribution, etc.
The chances of an asteroid hitting earth in the next 100 years are close to nill. Now, in 100 years we will probably have the technology to blow up Sun, let alone asteroids.
Well, I've read the article and it seems to me that they are mostly right. Pouring big money into developing something you won't own is dangerous and may not pay back, because some other company or even an individual can offer an added value service by taking your results without spending on the development.
On the other hand, I talked to a wireless software start-up founder recently. He said that the biggest obstracle he now encounters is that many companies are reluctant to adopt new (closed sourced) technology because they are afraid of becoming hostages of a software company.
So, in a sense, a company loses money developing GPL'ed software, on the other hand, the marked wants GPL'ed software. The obvious conclusion is that Open Source development will live, but it will be left to individuals entertaining themselves or monopolies that don't care about competition.
Just my $.02 worth of truisms.

Not too far from where I live we have a program that routinely teaches SCs (senior citizens) how to compute wisely.
Here's the approx. schedule:
Week 1: Electricity and Magnetism
Week 2: Semiconductor technology and microchips
Week 3: Computer architecture
Week 4: Assembly language
Week 5: Fortran
Week 6: C
Week 7: C++
By the time they are done with templates and polymorphism they are ready to begin learning about email and the web.

People in underdeveloped countries living just as they do now, if not worse
People in developed countries accumulating much more wealth, especially as AI (and pre-AI) improves productivity.
Medicine cures obesity, some forms of cancer, but not all of them. People live longer, but still die.
Terrorism becomes a much bigger threat then it is now. Small organizations can destroy cities.
Of course, when AI fully kicks in, all bets are off.
