I'll just go on a bitchy little rant about how I've never once gotten mod points despite the number of posts I've made, my karma, my many meta-moderations or the fact that I'm number four or five on the list of top contributors. You mean you don't know about the three shells?

There's plenty of tracks in iTMS that are DRM free. There's plenty of music stores (like bleep.com) that sell in DRM free formats.

I find it really embarrassing that a geek site like Slashdot is full of people who use the excuse that Apple sell some DRM music to make political statements rather than technical arguments. If I wanted that shit, I'd read the comments in the WSJ.

The problems with kids like you today, is that you can't be bother to find out anything for yourself so you just regurgitate what you hear from your friends.

If Apple licenced their DRM it would only have the affect of PROMOTING it. Look what's happening now - more and more tacks on iTMS are drm FREE, and will work with any music player you want.

  9. Re:So what? on Apple Is Now the #1 US Music Retailer · · Score: 1

There's plenty of non-RAIA labels on iTunes now. Ninjatunes is a big, good example. They offer all their music DRM free (yes, through iTMS) as default, and it costs no more than any other standard music through the store. I'd refused to buy anything DRM from it, but still used it to checkout new music, find names, etc. So it surprised me that there's actually a huge amount of non-DRM music available, even from the RAIA labels.

The machines were much better for some tasks despite the processor speed difference. I can remember quite clearly photoshop and illustrator choking on large files on P3 Wintels where the G4 Powermacs would handle them just fine. Even the apparent interface response time of later G4s seemed better to our graphics guys than - on paper - much faster P4's. This made them 'faster' i.e. they could do more in a set time. There was a reason that Macs were used in DTP houses, and it wasn't the design of their cases.

New Vista laptop: let me list the woes...

    1. Adobe Creative Suite install fails. Aparently not an uncommon problem. Finding a fix that works...far too long.
    2. Internet Expoder crashes on start-up. Also not a unique issue. Fixed by full reinstall.
    3. Blue screen of death (yes, it does exist!). Happens randomly while idle (twice so far).
    4. Super slow copy to network folder from optical disk.
    5. Enough random crashes when dealing with large files (no problem with similar hardware and XP, with less memory).
    6. The much vaunted "Areo Glass" interface seems mostly bling and little substance. For example, if there is a single login dialouge box in the middle of the screen and no other windows open, it's REALLY difficult to tell at a glance if it has focus or not!
    7. Too much window border in my windows and not enough window. Unmaximised windows seem to have a really deep top-bar.

Plenty of other gripes. Enough that the difference between this and XP SP2 is day and night, while OS X 10.4/5 is in a totally different league altogether.

You don't HAVE to provided it when say, opening a bank or starting a new job, but if you don't you're simply taxed at the highest rate. IIRC it replaced a plan to have a national ID system, and it seems to be working out pretty well on a privacy level because it is only related to tax and financial aspects, which is where these system are actually needed and useful.

To ME it looks like the Air was designed with THINNESS being the first priority, and here it exceeds anything else on the market. I don't need an optical drive when I'm on the road, and who the hell with a wireless laptop has even used the ethernet port in the last 3 years? For what it's intended for this laptop has no loss in functionality, and no compeditor. I'm truly astounded that so few people here get it - sometimes I think all the older guys who don't live in a basement anymore must have found some other forum to read...and no one told me!

Big plus for me... my laptop MUST have a built in DVD drive as I use it as an entertainment station for the kids while we're away...

Well, I've got news for you - thickness and weight are really important to people who travel loads, and have other things - like you know...work...to take with them instead of DVD's etal. So the Air isn't for you. It sounds like the Lenvovo isn't either. Get over it!

The reason why few people at Slashdot think the Air is worth the price, is...well...they're just not the target market. When you're flying thousands of k's a week around the world and _every single gram is an extra pain in the arse_ - and all you really need to get your work done is web access/email/some other low power app then the Air is perfect. You don't want extra batteries, DVD drives, mice, etc, because all that is 1) extra crap you need to take, and 2) extra weight which a pain.

I know some people still won't get it, but when you're in a position like that there is *very little* out there that is suitable, and the Air is the best there is. I'm speaking from the voice of experience here, but I'm still not going to get an Air - yet.. I still need something slightly more powerful for the things I do, but when the Air gets improved to the specs I need, I'll be all over it in a flash. I'm not holding my breath on that one though.
