  2. Re:Regarding paths... on Rage Against the File System Standard · · Score: 1

    So if I want to execute 'mozilla' I first have to enter $APP=mozilla, then run 'mozilla'?

    No I am talking about writing a script that updates the $PATH variable everytime you enter something on the commandline to look for that command in the:

    /usr/local/$APP/bin directory.

    In this case:

    mozilla=/usr/local/mozilla/bin/mozilla

    It might be tricky to get it to work 100% but a few it doesn't seem to be impossible.

    Couldn't $PATH be expanded with a variable to include those subdirectories? something ala:

    PATH=/bin/:/usr/bin/:/usr/local/$APP/bin

    where $APP would be whatever you are calling on the command line.

    APP=mozilla

    This way the majority of the filesystem is left alone and the path isn't too long.

    I am not sure how to do this off the top of my head but I will try to figure this out today.

    In addition somewone could come up with a bootable disk that would let anyone make the Xbox a working Linux system without touching the HD , at first. This mini distro would be tuned for the X box and give the user a much more powerful experience comparably. I think that this could be the Linux advocacy platform of choice.Think about how easy it would be for you to throw a disk on your friend XBox and show 'em what it can do. - Just a thought

The only reason that Star Trek is even presented as fiction is because the little people can't handle the truth. Which is,we will all be Salamanders in a million years and it is obvious that Mach 5 can be extrapolated into Warp 10.Xcellerated Darwin is upon us. G-d bless Texas and the 49 lilin's -schwaahed

    I asked Linus about this at PC Expo. He said that they had toyed around with the idea but decided it wasn't worth the trouble involved.
    I assume he meant it wouldn't have been worth it technically, *but* maybe they want to avoid any funny business with the GPL and the Free Software Community and they are just leaving it alone until they are more establish before they risk get entangled with the best ally they could have.
    If they release good information about optimizing for Crusoe to The Linux, *BSD's, and BeOS. If I were them I would be making some covert plans with Apple Computer also.

  9. www.powerlogix.com on Rumors Of MP PowerMac G4 Flying! · · Score: 1

    Powerlogix had a dual processor card on their website, I beleive it was called the Zforce 2.0. It accepted two G4's. It seems like they were ready to ship in January and even had prices(around $180 w/o processors) and an upgrade path from older upgrades, but than it just mysteriously dissappeared from the website. the rumor was they could not ship before Apple. So if you wanted to you could probably get a regular uniprocessor G4 and a Powerlogix upgrade with a matching processor and forget about Apple pricing these boxes throught the roof. It should cost around the same as a regular G4 upgrade. This could be alright for a 400mhz box.

  10. I Think there are some important comparisons. on Linux And Hip Hop · · Score: 1

    I am Harlem born and bred. I grew up with Hip Hop and am very disturbed with the changes in certain portions, as it has gained more crossover recognition and money.
    The whole "Gangsta Rap," thing is something that I feel has been largely a success because of Corporate Funding and White people buying it. I am not saying that Black People don't buy it but most of it is bought by whites. It is disturbing to me that so many people think that this is what Hip Hop culture represents. I don't think it is but this is where the money is at. A lot of the commentary above is just sad. I didn't realize that people are really that ignorant about what Rap or Hip Hop is. I know what it is for me so I don't personally feel like I need to prove that point to anyone on this list.
    If you do look at how the image of Rap has been hijacked into the Insane Lie that is most "Gangsta Rap," it might give some clues for how the Linux community could, and possibly already is being hijacked itself.

    What cards will/do have hardware 3D acceleration and support similar to what they do have under windows? What are people using that they are happy with? Or please point me in the direction of some good information that can help me make an informed choice.
