Wouldn't writing down all of my passwords on a single sheet of paper leave me open to the same problem? One security breech (e.g. mugging, lose wallet, etc.) and all is compromised?
There's a difference between my private home and a public school that is entrusted to keep my personal information safe. I want to know about every security hole, and I'd rather it be done by white hats than to get a call from my credit card companies one day!
The board of directors by law must consist of at least 40% "uninterested parties". Uninterested meaning not stockholders, working for the company, family members of people working for the company, etc.
Which of course means that 60% still CAN be part owner (stockholders).
Of course, this is USA SEC law. I don't know Japan's laws, but I would expect that they are similar.
I don't know the makeup of Nintendo's shareholders or their method of voting in board members, but I'm guessing that 10% is a pretty big stake comparatively and he could still wield quite a bit of influence as to who gets voted into the board of directors, though he will have no control over company direction and policy.
Right, so we SHOULD sue McDonald's for selling us tasty food that makes us fat, right? We can't help ourselves?
I'm big on personal responsibility and accountability. I do feel for drug addicts in that addiction is a sickness, but the first hit was their choice to ingest.
Slashdot seems to be very U.S.-centric. Do you have any plans to be more international in your scope?
Slashdot is U.S.-centric. We readily admit this, and really don't see it as a problem. Slashdot is run by Americans, after all, and the vast majority of our readership is in the U.S. We're certainly not opposed to doing more international stories, but we don't have any formal plans for making that happen. All we can really tell you is that if you're outside the U.S. and you have news, submit it, and if it looks interesting, we'll post it.
It is worth noting that there is a Japanese Slashdot run by VA Japan. While we helped them a little in their early days, they essentially run their own content without any real involvement from us... none of us can read Kanji! There are currently no plans to do other language or nation specific Slashdot sites.
"Your" forums? You run minidisc.org? That's cool, I've been visiting that site for years. I just wish Sharp would come out with a Hi-MD portable, they do MD right.
There's a major difference between fighting soldiers on a battlefield, and torturing them in a prison.
I am not hiding from the realities of war (though I do feel that 9/11 was not unprovoked - chalk it up to horribly ignorant foreign policy and America training and arming bad people who later turned against us), but there's a reason the geneva conventions are in place. Wars are between entities, not individuals. Accepting the reality that war will happen, the geneva conventions were created to minimize the horrors of war for the individual. That being said, there are many countries, many of them islamic, that don't follow them. Does that then give us the right to similarly torture their soldiers, civillians, and other "suspected terrorists?
Another old adage is that eye for eye, soon you'll have a room full of blind people.
If you truly knew the golden rule, you'd know that when applying it, it doesn't matter in what or who the other person believes.
Further, I don't think they don't believe that Jesus existed. The point of contention is whether or not he was the son of g/God. I don't believe that he was either (yes, even the New Testament), and yet I still think the bible has significance to myself and everyone. This includes but is not limited to the golden rule, of course.
Or what about taking humilating photographs of prisoners of war in situations that go against their religious beliefs? Oh wait, that was us.
Or let's make prisoners of war make a naked human pyramid, and photograph that too? Oh wait, that's us too.
No matter what you think about the "turrists" (say it with a drawl like Dubya), haven't you heard of the golden rule? That's not something you can selectively apply, or not apply just because you're mad.
To be pedantic, you are MOSTLY incorrect. An employer can terminate your employment for any non-discriminatory reason (that's the biggie). In other words, a reason that would have to hold up in court if the term'ed employee sued them. Most companies take extra-special care to document all incidents so that they don't lose in court if they do get sued for wrongful termination.
I don't see why a company should fire a person for a negative 'blog comment...in most circumstances. There are industries/sectors where public comment on business matters is inappropriate. I think that if they are going to fire you for it, it should be due to libel and they should also be suing you due to this fact. If the 'blogger is making a valid point and you want to fire him because of it, there's deeper problems at the company methinks....
You people are missing the point. Yes, I am a libertarian, however I never discussed the advantages or disadvantages of a free market economy. All I was saying is that in one, government does not compete with private industry.
I hope you mean "regular joe schmoes" when mentioning "communities" and not "the local government", because the free market economy was certainly NOT intended to have the government compete with business on non-essential services to the public...that's wrong on so many levels.
Nevertheless, there are knock-off Mach 3 blades sold at a cheaper price in my grocery store, made (or at least branded) by the store itself (Hy-Vee). Whether they are of the same quality is unknown to me.
Can this be confirmed (that the Senator is probably sponsored by MS)? Isn't there a list of who companies have funded in specific?
It's not that I doubt you; quite to the contrary, I agree with you (and it's just an aside anyway), but I seem to remember that there's a list of this and it would be interesting to see right now...
Problem is, you're dumping a lot of money down the drain on rent I'm sure, and you'll have nothing to show for it when you move. Buy a house, even if you have to borrow, and you're paying toward something you own. Get a 30-yr mortgage, pay it off early, and maybe you don't get it paid in 10 years, but it's better to drink from a fountain and let some water trickle down the side of your mouth than to just turn the faucet on over the drain:)
I assume that, as a scientist, you have researched the history of Catholocism and found that at its core it is a corruption of the teachings of Jesus by Roman emperors, right? Like the fact that the "Holy Bible" has had all of the books excluded that show women on equal footing to men, for instance?
BTW, I am not protestant, or any other religion for that matter, before you go that route.
There's more to sound than the audible spectrum, just like there's more to light than the visible spectrum. I suppose you think Infrared and Ultraviolet are to be ignored?
OpenOffice.org X11 on the mac is effectively dead because it is horrendously understaffed. There are less then 5 people actively working on it. Not good for an 8 million line + application.
Come on, EA Games works with worse code-to-human ratios than that, and I don't hear THEM complaining!

Good try, except that illegal activity is by definition (by law) uninsurable.
;)
I know this was a funny post, but I just thought I would point that out in case anyone took it seriously
Don't let your "facts" get in the way of a good leftist anti-capitalist flame session ;)

I don't know, is Milton Friedman an economist?
But they ARE making money off the raw conversion software. Nikon sells it as an add-on.
I'm sorry, when does the music begin? I like music!
That'd be a great analogy, if Dell manufactured processors. However, they don't. They buy them from Intel.
