That's your own fault due to personal prejudice, and you sound exactly like my mother-in-law. She refuses to buy a "Datsun" (Nissan) because some salesman was cold to her 25 years ago when she was car shopping, and has a negative perception about non-American cars because of that and other hype throughout the years. That's her loss.

A wise shopper is not stuck on brands, especially in an investment as large as a car. Pick up any car issue of Consumer Reports and you'll find that especially in the area of passenger cars, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and even Hyundai are KILLING GM and Chrysler (and usually Ford too) in quality. Plus, Toyota's usually a little cheaper and Hyundai is usually a LOT cheaper, even today. Honda and Nissan are more but you are getting a much nicer car than the comparable Detroit model almost without exception.

I can't speak for AMD pre-K6 days, but since then they have made a very good and cost-efficient processor. In fact, there have been few times since the introduction of the Athlon that I haven't preferred AMD's offerings to Intel.

I would recommend that instead of remaining prejudiced based on perceptions you had on information that is years out-of-date, take an objective view at the information available currently. Read about both sides of the coin. You might be surprised at what you find, if you REMAIN OBJECTIVE.

Believe me, as I mentioned in another reply to this thread, I am well aware of the World's Smallest Political Quiz. In fact, it is originally what told me that I was a libertarian, which I proved by researching further. I also thought I was a republican but was actually left of center if anything on the standard line, go figure. Nevertheless, I didn't even bring it up because the post I was responding to merely discussed Republicans and Democrats. The point you and the other person made is very valid, and I think everybody should take a few of those little quizzes at some point (maybe in high school civics) to see where they really fall, not where they think they do based on shiny candidates they support based on rhetoric.

I take issue with the suggestion that the LP is more like the GOP than the Dems. Just because most members are older and the party is pro-free trade and gun rights doesn't mean they're closer to the GOP. In fact, if they are not squarely between what the two parties historically represent, I would say that they were closer to the Dems because of their beliefs in social freedoms. Republicans are much more against abortion choice, drugs, and non-Christian religions than the Dems are against guns and private enterprise (in my experience). The "center" between Republicans and Democrats, especially when viewed compared to other countries, is right of the actual "center", whereas the LP would be on the true "center", therefore closer to the left. If that makes sense.

I'd think popping in a live CD of some sort (itself an interesting concept; maybe take something like PCLinuxOS which I was able to resize an NTFS partition, create new Linux partitions, and install in about 15 minutes total) and showing them all the neat stuff that comes built in to your average KDE or Gnome desktop would open some eyes. The free games (foobilliards, tuxracer), stuff like XEarth, etc. Intersperse these things with a few graphical tools that are Linux only and kill Windows programs for the same functionality set, show them stuff like Firefox and Open Office that work on both platforms, and I think you would intrigue more than a few people.
