I agree. How long will it be before the RIAA starts dragging street musicians into the courts? Maybe someone else can answer this: do musicians have any legal rights to perform copyrighted material in public? My guess is no. I can see it starting first as a campaign against performers at weddings and stuff, and then expanding to street musicians.
And, if they are legally protected, who'se to say they wont pass something like the DMCA that will make it illegal?
Thankyouthankyouthankyou. I was beginning to think I was the only one on slashdot who actually thought IP laws were BAD. If IP laws went away, then we would only have the artists (singers, painters, programmers etc...) that love to do their work left, and all of the crap that people prostitute them selves out to do will go away.
What you said is misleading. It's only partially true that DeCSS was not written DeCSS was not written for the purpose of playing DVDs on Linux. True DeCSS doesnt play DVD's on Linux, but it wasnt written for pirating DVD's either. It was more written as a proof of concept program, as a step on the way to a Linux DVD player.
They dont lift the cable up. They build it down from geosynchronous orbit in space.
The elevator is built both towards & away from the earth at the same rate from the geosynchronous point. The best way to do this is to use an asteroid for raw materials because then you dont have to send much stuff up into space.
Pure H2O2, as opposed to the 5% stuff you get in stores, is most certianly a controlled substance as it is highly reactive, and therefore dangerous. What's he going to say at the border... nothing to declare, just a rocket and enough explosives to level a small city? Ok, go on through sir.
Anyway, good luck to him, i hope he really does succeed. And hint to him, you dont really need FAA approval to launch the rocket. Sure you might get in some trouble from them when you land, but who'se going to throw the first civilian astronaut in jail?
When I read this article in scientific american, they mentioned that some of the weapons may be able to travel faster than the speed of sound in water. My first thought was: if sonar is used as the primary means of detecting things in the water, than a projectile travelling faster than the sonar sound waves can, would be invisible to anything that it was travelling towards! So, not only warp speed, but a cloaking shield too!
ASP is one of those really cool technologies that is scary if you really think about it.
When you host an application off site, there are soooo many things that can go wrong.
Say you're running word locally. The only thing that can stop you from using word is your computer not working.
Now, say you're running word from an ASP who is located externally to your building. Even if your computer works, your hub, router, the line that connects you to the ASP (which may be managed by an completley apathetic phone company), the asp's hub, router, or server may have a problem which stops you from being able to run Word.
Now imagine word is a mission critical application, hard decision which one is safer/cheaper? I don't think so. Once you get past the coolness of ASP, it doesnt look so great.
"If I need source, if I need schematics, if I need service manuals... Your product is a hunk of trash and I don't want it. "
It so happens that I want to add a amp to my car. I need a wiring diagram for the stereo & battery system. Unfortunatley, you cant get those for my car. So, no schematics, service manuals makes my car a piece of junk. I guess that's just the difference between a geek and a user.
Dont be stupid. There is a java notes client installed with domino server. it's not advertised, but if you find it you can run it. And even if you're too dumb to find a java file in a directory, you can access any notes database over the web (as long as you enable it)with the same notes interface.
I must agree. I have been doing tech support for almost 5 years, and all I can say is, get out while you can! before you become bitter (that takes about 2 years). I go into Luser mode automatically now. The start button no longer exists to me, it is "the button in the bottom right hand corner of your screen". Phrases like that and "the my computer icon on your desktop" instead of "my computer" (which invariably confuses the user who thinks your talking about your own computer) slip out without even noticing them, even when talking to guru's who have been in the comoputer industry for longer than I have been alive. I have reached the point where I no longer belive anything anyone tells me, because you can NEVER BELIVE A USER. If they tell you the sky is blue, it's probably raining. Tech support invades every fiber of your being and forever changes you. I yearn for the kind of job where the hardest question i have to ask someone is "would you like fries with that?"
You just met one. I'm an IBM employee and I love Notes. It is far superior to outlook in almost every way. It's only problem is it's not terribly user friendly, but that's because it has a different (better, in my opinion) concept about how email should work than Microsoft.
Oh, and 2 of the Govt. clients that we support use notes, and love it.
If you want a real non-profit company, check out reclaim the.net (you'll have to search on google to find their web site). They are a non-profit company doing alternate TLD's
I think the public needs a lesson on basic information theory. If you can listen to it, or watch it, there has to be a decoded stream somewhere. There are many ways you could record a burn-proof cd. One of the simple ways is to use a program called www.highcriteria.com Total Recorder (www.highcriteria.com) that simply installs itself as a sound driver, and records everything that is supposed to go to the sound card. Or just plug the line out on your sound card to the line in and record.
And... The pictures sure look doctored. The image on Codex Udolphus looks like it's in a higher resolution than 120x120 pixels, and you dont get that well defined of a fractal only going to 70 iterations. (at 120x120 with 70 iterations, that's the possibility of having to do 1.008 million calculations)
I have my doubts as to wether this article is real or not. I once wrote a program to plot fractals, and know that there can be anywhere from 100-thousands of calculations PER PIXEL, as you have to calculate wether the formula for each set of X/Y coordinates either approches infinity or not. Even at a fairly low resolution, this can add up to taking longer than someone's lifetime.
between a DDOS and a site being slashdotted? Might this device someday prevent us geeks from getting our daily dose of news for nerds?
Thousands or hundreds of thousands of seperate hosts hitting the same IP address at the same time... DDOS, or slashdot effect??
Well, if it's pure analog output, there's nothing to stop you from recording it. If it's digital output, as it most likely will be, then you can bet there will be copyright (ie: copy protection) info stored in the data stream. So, likely you will be able to make a less than perfect copy with no problem, but not be able to make a perfect copy at all.

And that, my friend, is precisely what is wrong with copyright/IP law.
You can also go download the actual recording of the hearing in mp3 or real audio format, from 2600.com

The difference, is that this guy isnt asking anyone for money. If it was a scam, he's not very smart, because he is going to walk away from it broke.

Of course, the start button is in the bottom left hand corner of the screen usually. Guess I've taken one too many calls today...

Of course, it's going to take energy to fly those airplanes. And what about all the pollution they are going to put out?
Dr. Laura? Is that you? I didnt know you read slashdot!
How's that for Ironic? Everything2 has been slashdotted!

As opposed to what?? They've never HAD a secure music format, so it's this time as opposed to what?
