  1. Re:Very good fiber in Minneapolis on The Fastest-Growing Tech State Is... Minnesota · · Score: 1

If by large part you mean Uptown, then yes. USI said they will only roll out fiber to neighborhoods where their wireless network is saturated. That is unlikely to happen anywhere else. If USI isn't available where you are, it won't be. I'd like that not to be the case so if I'm wrong about this, I'd enjoy hearing it. CenturyLink on the other hand, is rolling out fiber in other parts of the city, which is what I have now.

  2. Surprised? on FCC Reports Comcast P2P Blocking Was More Widespread · · Score: 5, Insightful

Who is surprised by this revelation? From initial denial to any traffic shaping, to stacking the hearing with payed shills, Comcast has proven they are willing to do whatever it takes to oversell their service and then bottleneck it to keep from having to make infrastructure upgrades. I wouldn't be shocked if they rubbed the blood of sacrificed newborn children onto their fiber if it would save them a buck or two. Go Comcast!

  5. It's not just a rural problem. on The US Rural Broadband Crisis · · Score: 1

It's not just a rural problem. My office is located in a major Minneapolis suburb (Minnetonka). We are at the extreme distance allowable from the central office of the phone company so we barely can get DSL. The cable company says they won't spend $40,000 they claim it will cost to run cable across the street to our office building. We're having to double up sub 1megabit DSL lines like ISDN lines of yore to get any reasonable amount of speed. It's absolutely ridiculous.

  6. Sports Networks on FCC Head Supports Ala Carte Cable · · Score: 2, Informative

I actually believe the cable companies would like to offer ala cart pricing. The problem is that the sports networks dictate that if they aren't included with every customer, they won't offer service at all. All or nothing. They also charge a ridiculous percentage of the total cable bill per month. Extortionists, it seems.

People will continue to buy computers far more powerful than they actually require because salesmen are usually pretty good at convincing people that they need it regardless. Also, PC gaming isn't going to let up and the hardware requirements aren't either. Sleep easy, Moore's Law.

Licensed streaming audio in other countries will continue to stream in mp3 format, and this legislation will just push hosts of such services to operate out of those countries, widening our trade deficit.
