amen to that, good sir... I snatch up boxes from people who can no longer play the hottest games on them so they figure they're obsolete... they run great for everything that I want to do... just have to keep the high powered windows box around to make sure I can keep playing the hottest games as well :)

Isn't Linux suppose to be about freedom? You can do anything you want with GPL'd products so long as you give the source back.

But the mere issue of a per-seat license using GPL'd software is a (damn, whats that word ? you know, Military Intelligence, Microsoft Works... ugh... you get my point).. If you pay for the first copy (or should I just say "aquire a copy"), then the GPL allows you to install it as many times as you want... but according to what I've read, parts of it aren't GPL'd...

Right now we are running off a crap load of IPO money that will run out and many of the dedicated Linux programmers funded by these companies will be forced to take positions at companies that don't give a rats ass about Linux. Linux is not exempt from the fact that it needs money to grow and prosper.

Linux doesn't need the business side to prosper... Linux didn't get where it is from big business, or someone making a buck... look at tons of developers out there hacking code for linux distro's... check where they work, not a development house working on linux projects..some don't even work in a computer related field..So... Linux IS EXEMPT from the greed of a capatalist society.

So what we should do is quickly aquire one of their CD's, replace the proprietary source, and re-release it under a similar name...

An agreement is fine but you have to remember to take the other guy's interest into account too when you're drafting it and always remember, it is YOU who are approaching HIM and asking HIM for HIS money, not the other way around.

Ahh, but on the other hand, he is offering the VC a (hopefully) good idea and potential revenue generation in return for some of the VC's money. The VC doesn't make money without investing money, that's the business he's in, and without good ideas, he has nothing to invest in.

What your saying is practically like saying to a job hunter that "YOUR approaching an employer asking HIM to pay YOUR bills with HIS money, so take his view in consideration", when after getting some self esteem, you should approach it as "YOUR offering to solve HIS staffing deficiency with YOUR time and skills".

    Just my two cents.. Mike

He said he *imagine*'s creating games would be exciting and creative. Having not done it before, that's all he has and should pursue it if he's so inclined. You could only imagine liking something till you do it.

How he should go about it was the question, try answering that one.

And to the poster : Don't let people tell you it's not worth it. You'll learn that there are two types of workers in development fields (as well as a few other fields)... those who do it because they love it and those who do it because it's good money. Those who do it for the money will say being a developer sucks, those who do it because they love it will tell you otherwise. If you're happy seeing someone getting blisters on their clicker finger playing your game hours on end while pumping their body full of caffiene to keep up with their machine, and that outweighs the BS you're going to deal with getting the game out, then for sure, continue trying to do what you want to do... but if your just in it for the money, then listen to the others that are just in it for the money, you could get paid alot more to do alot less elsewhere.

You're all jumping to defend this young man, after hearing the story from his side. Are any of you taking into thought what it would be like if you were on the other side of something like that. Say your kid came home and told you "Sean, this boy in my class, said blah blah blah today... (add in the loose translation and misinterpretation) that usually accompanies one repeating something someone else said) Turn the story around ... IF Sean later came and shot up the school, EVERYONE would look back to this day and say "Why wasn't something done at this time??" No body would care about the bullies, or feel sorry for the kid who reacted, they would wonder why the SCHOOL didn't do something about this potential problem at the time that it happened ? Why didn't Sean say something to a teacher or school staff ? Yeh, I've heard the "don't want to be a tattletale" skit, but school officials can react in ways that don't involve them telling the bullies that Sean complained, give them that much credit. Being a new father myself, and yet still young enough to remember what HS was like (including my year stint at Alternative), I'd have to take a different look at this and say that that the school, while acting swiftly and heavily and appearing to have pushed this too far, did the right thing in eliminating the problem. Who's the school to judge that "this student is bad and should be sent to alternative", or judge "this student did a BAD THING and should be scorned and sent back into regular school" ? Would you want your kids in there when they make the wrong decision ? We're not talking about someone's feelings getting hurt, or someone spending a year in alternative education, we're talking the potential loss of children's lives, and it's not something that should be judged litely. Sean may be a bright kid, intellegent, and leaps and bounds beyond the mentality of his peers, but he made the mistake of saying what he did. Surely they're not moving him to alternative education for the rest of his high school years.. Its probably a one year stint where he can be watched in the controlled settings of an alternative school. If my daughter overheard a classmate say the same thing Sean said, *I* would have been at the school demanding something be done about it. Especially in light of the recent slew of School shootings. I don't know this kid from Tom, Dick, or Harry, and I sure as hell wouldn't want to take the risk with my daughter's life on the thought that "he's just a smart, intelligent and misunderstood" individual. So... To Sean : You said what you said, and while you may know that you're not capable of commiting those acts, and your parents and friends may know that your not capable of what you said, hundreds (thousands ?) of other parents who's kids attend your school do NOT know that. This isn't the school being out for you, this is protecting the other students from a *potential* threat. Next time, atleast attempt to handle the bullies through the system. Then when you "snap" on their level (repeat the actions and statements you did, not pull a real gun), there's recourse in the fact that you tried to seek help. Mike
