better take a longer look at the U.S.A. for signs of 1984... goerge dubbaya is the fr34k with the paranoid delusion of a continuing war on 'terrorism', even though he has no way of validating that aside from snowballing the American public as was done in the novel by Orwell.. my two cents worth
Macs are more expensive because of the proprietary nature of the hardware, but if they release a X86 version of the GUI, then they would have much more market
actually Mac OSX is available for the x86... and it's not a hard port to make, as you stated- the basis for the new Mac OS is OSS, so the ports to x86 are as simple as recompiling portions of the *bsd bottom line code to accept x86 archetecture.. but you still don't see it sweeping the globe. Why? as a friend put it nicely 'I used it once and hated it, there is no way you'll get me to use it again, no matter what they've done with it'.. they had a chance to get people to like them, and didn't.. *shrugs* then again, in the OS market POV works just as well
and then again, they may not even place restrictions on the company at all... M$ wins yet again, and the world as a whole loses.. does it matter? to anyone running a secure box, no- we aren't running M$ products on our secure stuff anyways, we're running *nix. I say let M$ have it's moment, as another person noted, a BSOD on a ship during the middle of a battle would be the best argument to the U.S. Gov't to change their line of thinking. 'today in the news, Win NT responsible for USS (insert battleship name here) sinking and the loss of lives, more at 11'
yes as a matter of fact, you can sue someone over something which is, as you so put it 'free', though I"m sure you might not understand the meaning of free here... most don't.. this is not free as in "oh I can have it and take it and do what I wish with it and never have to explain myself to anyone" free, this is " I am responsible to the people I am reciving this from and those that come after me" free.. you don't own it when you get it, your leasing it...
... the why is obvious, the WHO isn't.. ponder that for a moment.. and ask yourself- is an outside source foolish enough to do something so obvious? if so, what are they trying to tell america in this act of stupidity?
But only in *America* (that would be the U.S.A.- not Canada thank you very kindly) yeah sure the 'senate' can pass this little bit of merde, but personally.. it just means the *rest* of the world only has to avoid buying american built products.. no controls, no merde.. no problem.. then again, thats just my $.02 worth ( or in amrican... $.00000000000000000000002)

unfortunate problem: say you want to open a web page, dealing with a business that YOU own, created and have this great idea for branching out onto the web to gain a little more exposure for your business, but your (1) local government wants to tax your @$$ to allow you to operate your new 'web-business' because they can, then the next level of gov't decides, "hey lets tax them too" then it gets to the top level of gov't, who of course see this as a cash cow for them as well, see you had to register each part of each level of each domain sub-prefex, so now it's hooters.com.atlanta$.ga$.us$ Just my two cents worth, and a reason to question. The bottom line for me, would have to be: An OS that *doesn't* crash, burn, frag my HD seven ways to next week, doesn't ask me to sell my essence just to use it, or get the latest patch kit, or demands that I install crap that I don't need/won't use. I want an OS that *Isn't* hardware specific, lets me upgrade whenever I want, because man, that extra few Megs of ram sure are nice, but having some guy come to my place, or trying to *find* a mac store to bring it into, are just *not* my idea of fun. *Doesn't* expect me to be a mindless four thumbed monkey that gets told what software they *should* have. *Won't* be worthless two weeks from now because a new *insert-name-of-virus-here* email has corrupted my HD because of the lame@$$ email program that was bundled with the OS, that I didn't ask for, nor do I want. *takes a deep breath* look, I love the notion of the Mac.. hell my nick used to be Rnd_apple for freaks sakes... but the largest problem was... $$$$$$$... I can throw together a PC for less.. how, build it one part at a time.. I love to tinker... so the notion of an OS that lets me do just that, tinker was rather novel.. no matter the flavour of the *nix, it's all good in my eyes. stability, the chance to look under the hood (and supe it how I want it), and the fact that I'm not bound by hardware makes it something *I* like.. yes *my* personal tastes, not yours, not his or hers, and not your mother/grandmother etc. I guess what I'm trying to say is, to each their own. If it works for you, great, of not..look for something that *will* work for you, choice is better than *my shit is better than yours!* this rant has been brought to you by a tinker:) Just Another Pagan Shedding Light in this Dark Age~ JAPLDA

I'm not sure where your comment is directed, though your example is somewhat- lacking, O'reily were making M$ related products, not openware. They were good at it. They had good people on their software team.
Granted you are correct in that one should stick to what one knows, perfect that and then move on to other things, never stagnating or refusing to grow. however, one should always remember that if your going to spout- read while you do it.
