  1. Hang them... on EDS Silent On New CEO's IT Consulting Past · · Score: 1

Perhaps we should start hanging these CEO asswipe types up by their testicles: if their balls separate from their bodies they are honest and may have the job, if they remain attached they are crooks and can be left that way forever.

This might discourage having the position of CEO in the first place, and we might then find a better way to run our corporations. If you think this is drastic, you should see what I **didn't** write here...

You "Yanks", as we sometimes call you are our friends and historically very much our cousins. You are family. We have you in our hearts.

With Windows, I see it as 'dancing with the devil'. With Linux,
I feel more trusting considering its being open-source. My
greatest concern is for what I could be tricked into habitating my machine.
I have a lot to learn, and I'm keeping my eyes open.

  8. Downsides & my paranoia... on World Wide Cluster · · Score: 1
Being relatively new to the computer world, I find a lot of what takes place
as I browse the net very upsetting at times. For example, I've had shit
deposited onto my harddrive (i.e. cookie w/ java booger) which reset my home-
page. The next time I go online, I'm staring at not just one,
but three windows, each trying to sell me something I'm not going to buy regardless.

The idea of allowing someone's program to run on my machine, without my direct
control turns my stomach. Yes I am paranoid, and I think I have good reason to be.
More, bigger, faster and easier are not always better for an individual
user where control is given away to those who have their own agendas.

I like to think I am in control of my PC. I'm learning to take
measures to 'make it so'. I think we all should!

This is the Best! I have done this. Well-filtered, you end up with a nice syrup. Add a little (or a lot) of this to a mug of hot water and you've got the best damned tasting coffee you could imagine. And it lasts forever. The trick is to have two setups so you can keep 1/2 step ahead of the game, and never run out! I could rant forever about this - just try it!

  14. Virtual Community? on Rethinking Virtual Community: Part Three · · Score: 2

When I began my adventure in computing in a serious way a year ago, I was well aware of the vast quantity and scope of information available on the net. At first I was like the "kid in the candy store - all alone" situation. I couldn't get enough of it. As my hardware and internet access became increasingly sophisticated, I began to feel 'alone in a crowd'. I have dabbled in ICQ and other messenging services. Email seems to be the best option for now. I find I do want a very personal experience in the 'virtual community'. This community exists regardless of its changing quality. I see the virtual community in the same way as the one I live in physically. There is no practical difference except the assumed anonimity one could imagine when online. After all, "nobody can SEE me". Yet our words and what those words create with others online are what is "seen" - that's who we become. Imagine not having sight. You live with a lot of other blind people. Think about what communication and interaction might be like. In a sense, we are all 'blind' when online. We can't 'see' each other in a chat room. In this forum we are all visitors, contributors or those who maintain the site. We generate an online personality, and others relate to us accordingly. More to my point, I see the way to a meaningful virtual community is to BE the highest vision we have of what this should be, and practice it. As in the physical community, those who "misbehave" can be dealt with in order to keep them enfolded in the virtual community so all that wonderful creative energy misdirected for a time can mature with the rest of us, because we encourage it by our examples. I do think we should humanise/personalise our interactions in the virtual community. I am encouraged greatly by the mere fact that this topic has appeared to be discussed. I think this is enough from me, for now.

  15. Management 'experts'? on Do You Buy Into Management Methodologies In IT? · · Score: 1

Who are the real (potential) management experts in a company? I'd say the employees. The people who get the job done - who make the money for management are the employees. If management tries to manipulate their people, to force them into 'cleverly conceived' patterns of behaviour in order to increase productivity=$$$, I can only see limited results. Assuming employees are creative people who are willing to commit to get the job done, within their ranks are the answers to "management problems". (At least those which relate to the employees.) If management gathers their workers together to brainstorm solutions, problems could be resolved easily at the grassroots level - where the solutions really lie. After it's all said and done, management has nothing without their creative employees. If employees are smart enough to get the technical end of things done, they are smart enough to discover a better way to let this continue. This doesn't mean management doesn't have the responsibility to set up a useful matrix for their company to work within. Those who fill in the matrix, who give it form and function can best figure out how to reshape the company to get the job done better. (I'll stop rambling for now...)
