That's not the point. (also, there are Chrome billboards everywhere here in the city) This is the point:

    Well, Rogério Brito,

    Hi.

I am not a developer, but I do care. I do know about the "incestuous" relationships of the media playing libraries in the OSS world. I do know that having one alternative less is a bad thing, especially in the long run. I'm also very grateful for LAME and don't "wish the death of" any one of the projects you mentioned.

I do provide feedback to OSS developers, hopefully in the form of constructive suggestions. Maybe not media related ones, as that isn't my forté, but others. I've petitioned daringfireball to bring some attention to the matter. He reaches a lot of Mac devs. I think I'll try that Delicious Monster guy next.

My post above was not about dancing on the grave of the traffic cone, but to provide a service to the community: to share with other people an alternative way of playing media well that they may not know about, as I have only recently (re-)discovered Mplayer OSX Extended.

I guess that what I meant to say to you is: "Don't shit all over people you don't know and have only read one sentence of."

Signed, "user like the one above"

And that's the problem. Companies with shareholders are required by law to compete as hard as they can.

    That's actually not true.

A common economic theory is that what's best for a company is to aim to Maximise Shareholder Value, and that the best way to do that is to compete as hard as they can. But it's not law.

But even then, "as hard as they can" doesn't include anti-competative behaviour (or other unlawful things, like bombing AMD offices) because the EU will go and sit on you.

Actually you should be more worried about rain...how it takes to soak into the new asfalt...

Anyway, new tarmack has allready been invented ( to be quiet, yes). It's called ZOAB (Zeer Open Asfalt Beton, which means Realy Open Asfalt Concreet). It's nice airy mix of asfalt & concreet which reduces the time for rain to soak in, making it a lot safer to ride on in heavy rain & is quite a bit quieter..

There are also newer versions that are even quieter, but so far only ZOAB is use on almost all the dutch high-ways.

I wish these people would just combine their efforts instead of staying in that NIH (Not Invented Here) mode.

Debian doesn't go for the "every half year" release..

However, it's just the last release (Woody) that took so long...
That was for a number of reasons:
    - XFree had to be ported to 11 archs (up from 6), 3 or 4 of which X hadn't been ported to before.
    - 'Testing' was created, as to have a smoother transition beween 'unstable' and 'stable'.
    - KDE (2.2) was added to main, a first for a stable debian release. That produced some quirks of it's own.

However, with the upcoming release (sarge, now testing) there were 2 main hurdles:
    - The GCC 3.2 migration (ABI change) (KDE brakeage hell was spared by waiting with 3.x)
    - GTK(+) 2.x -> Gnome 2.x
There is however 1 more hurdle:
The new installer, which is coming along. Knoppix also made clear that 'automagic' was posible with debian.
