... was at my old company. They decided that people just weren't using secure enough passwords or changing them often enough. To fix the problem, they forced passwords to be x number of characters, with mixed capitalization, and at least one non-alpha character. Oh, and the passwords had to be changed every 90 days, and couldn't match the last four passwords. To make it even more confusing for the average joe, they decided to have the login password and email password be reset on different/staggered 90 day cycles, instead of the same time. On paper, it sounded like a good idea to lock things down, but in reality, everyone just started writing their passwords on post it notes on their monitor or at best, under the keyboard.
Besides, if the movies teach us anything, it's the experienced old cop who spots something out of place, while the young greenhorne smacks the battery casing of his incarcerator2000.
That's the part that drives me insane. I'm moving soon and just called SBC (chicago) to move my phone service. You can get the local service bundle for $27, or get it a la carte for $15, but if you make a call, it's 22cents a minute, off peak is 10% cheaper, the square root of your ass comes into play on weekends. No matter what, they guide you into the "Bundle" as the money you save is not worth the hastle of doing all the math. The same goes for DirecTv, Cable, etc. I hope this causes the "Bundle" to lose some of it's power, and really give the 3rd party vendors a chance to compete, but we'll see. Oh, and I do pay extra for Speakeasy DSL, because I like the service, and want to support the way they do business.
If we've already established that he drew heavily on Kurosawa, who stole from Shakespeare, then doesn't that prove prior art? I say no patents for Lucas - he has proven to be untrustworthy with his own property. Don't we go in and take over countries when the leaders fall short of our expectations? yes we do. we need a multi-national, liberation force to go to hollywood, and free star wars from it's oppressors. viva la liberte!
You forgot to mention training cousin Jane, uncle Jim, and Mom to NOT do those things. It's a tough battle, I know, but we have to try. Also, somebody, somewhere is actually buying the damn stuff, not that I've ever met anyone who has. How do we find and train those people to not purchase through spammers? I don't have that answer, but I'm working on it.
I'd hate to be there when the aliens come to retaliate for us firing our "primitive" sonic cannon at them. I don't think those cars are insured against alien invasion.
Only on Slashdot would the Freelamo website get modded up AFTER the guy pleads guilty. You may want to talk to Adrian about getting on board with your passion to defend him, professor - he's not helping.
Since probably at least half of your twenty neighbors plug the things in and go, just use their wi-fi points and vpn into your network if you need to - no bandwidth loss for you (it's all bonus, and free) and you can switch to the next guys nextwork if your current one gets slow.
Reading through the posts you see all the arguments that keep everyone working as a wage slave:
too frustrating (pick better clients)
no insurance (you can write it off when you pay for it yourself)
personal liabilty for damages (get insurance or incorporate - you can be a one person incorporation)
Really I prefer that people just keep on repeating what their parents told them growing up, as it keeps fewer people out there to compete with my self-owned business. Sure it gets frustrating sometimes, but it's my business and I call the shots, so if I need a break, I take one. I would much rather run my own show, then sit around complaining about working for "the Man". No matter where you are, you run into frustrating idiots, I just price myself out of their range, or don't go back if they drive me nuts - it's my call. If I deal with any idiots, it's beacuse they pay good money for me to deal with their crap, and they tend to keep breaking things on a regular basis(can you say, "repeat business"?). My favorite thing is to go in to fix a computer "problem" only to have it be a cord uplugged or printer out of toner. 10 minute fix equals one hour billed - fine by me! It's not for everybody (as seen in the other posts), but for me, there is nothing like the freedom of being your own boss. To those who prefer to work for someone else, they are just going to have to wait for the economy to pick up.
As a disclaimer, IT consulting is not my only source of income. I'm also a musician, but it boils down to the same thing. It still involves running your own business, and working with idiots sometimes - it just happens to involve beer more often.
It really makes the most sense to post the reviews of books that are actually good. If I'm interested in a new topic, I really don't care to read or wade through a detailed review of a book that is bad. Just give me one or two good books to start me in the right direction.
If I'm buying a car, sure list what's good and bad for my money, but if I'm looking for a book on new technology I'm into, just send me the ones people are passionate enough about to send in a glowing review.
I think this should be modded up, and have the troll removed.
from the original post: "...immediately wiped the hard drive..."
Even removing the "OS" rant equals a hasty move on the users part. Look in the manual, check the website, and maybe call tech support BEFORE you wipe the hard drive next time. But since he brought it up, buying a windows machine from a windows-centric company, and then bitchin' about their Linux support (face it - asking about motherboards and chipsets is NOT common in the windows end user world), is a transparent ploy to get high fives from the folks who read slashdot. Ok, you use Linux and your cool for doing so, just don't expect other companies to bend over backwards to help you when you wipe your hard drive too soon.
He goes through all the trouble and expense to make a basic TV "Time Shift" device with Linux, and then sumbits a picture of it sitting on top of a VCR!!! Granted, that's old tech "time shifting", but he obviously knows how to set the clock on the damn thing, so it probably could "work just fine for his needs" as well.
Let's see, what else could we make with Linux to do the same job as a tool we already have?
You've missed the point. The Music Industry is no longer the only path to the top of the mountain. Now, a hard working band or artist can self-promote through the internet and become successful without being an indentured servant to RIAA. If I reach a point where my music is so popular that I need to negotiate a distribution deal with a major label, then I have a proven product that they want to sell. If they are not willing to deal, then I can take my proven product to the next person who wants to make some easy money. Nowhere in that one statement (or article for that matter) does she say that a website = cd sales automagically. The entire country has learned that:
1) Get web presence 2) Make big $$$
is not a viable business model anymore. However, if you are a musician, or any artist for that matter, the internet now gives you the power to promote yourself to a large and diverse potential market of consumers. As she said, she's not getting rich, but she's making a significant increase in income due to her music being available for download. The truth of the statement, is that it is no longer necessary to get a recording contract to be a successful musician and songwriter. You can do it yourself with affordable home digital studios, local indie labels and distribution channels, and self-promotion on the web. That freedom and control over your own music and success is way more attractive then selling your soul for a "chance" at becoming a star.
... Stop complaining and just start asking for more money. If you really feel confident about the quality of your code, and your peers are asking three times what you are for the same project, then you're underpricing yourself in the market. It's like driving on the highway - driving too slow is just as dangerous (and often more so) than driving too fast. Make more $$$ in the same or less time - I wish I had your problems !
There is another way to "fight the man" and resist forced content, at least if you live in, or have access to a decent sized city. Go see a local band, and support musicians in your town. Most sell their cd's on the cheap, or give them away at shows --- they're just happy to have bodies there in the first place. Even if all the copy protection and content control issues are taken care of, you're still supporting Big Music by buying the CD's they offer to you. They've had control of music and musicians for years, feeding us the hits and bands they want us to hear. If you really want choices, why not try to find some in your neighborhood ?
Actually, there is information (and I believe sound bites) on http://www.lordoftherings.net/ that talks about working on the accents for the Hobbits at least. Check out the film section for info about the crew and other behind the scenes goodies....
I think there is an important component that many of "leftist" (brain) posts are missing by pointing out all the ways this guy will fail, be sued, or fired. Here is a man who is creating something with passion and intensity to make the world (NYC) a better place. I imagine his brain to work like this:
10 Dream/Desire to do something fun/good/both
20 Identify obstacles
30 Form solutions
40 Test solutions
50 If Success, Dance of Joy, goto 10 else goto 30
Wouldn't it be better for the left brains of the world to come in and help the right-brain dreamers of the world, rather than shoot them down ? I for one applaud him.
Besides, if the movies teach us anything, it's the experienced old cop who spots something out of place, while the young greenhorne smacks the battery casing of his incarcerator2000.

Here's hopin I have phones in two weeks
A big part of my business is helping the lost and wayward souls configure a secure wireless network. I feel sorry for them, but a geek's gotta eat!
