If you want to make sure that doesn't happen, write your congress critter and let them know how you feel and make it clear you'll be mad enough to start a grassroots campaign against them if they vote against this.

Don't have to. My rep (steny hoyer) was second only to Nancy Pelosi for being minority leader in the house. I think he'll be voting to overturn any veto that comes along.

Gannett, the company that USA Today built, I think. I know they own WUSA 9 in DC, which has spent the past fifteen years going straight into the shitter. Number of hours of news cut roughly in half. Quality reporters ostracized, demoted, and coerced to leave the station in favor of more 'camera friendly' people. Fluff pieces galour. If they're indicative of the other Gannett stations, Gannett TV is nothing to brag about.

It looks like they are planning to increase news a little bit this fall (with a decent anchor, to boot) so I'll hold my breath a bit. But until I see it, there's better news in DC. Hell, even the Fox affiliate's news is usually better.

Because the United States is a Republic, not a Democracy. In a Republic, 'leaders' sometimes have to do things that are unpopular, for the interests of the country. What's the point in having a president if they are always, 100% of the time going to do what the public wants? Why not get rid of Congress as well, and let people directly vote legislation for a body of judges to handle?

I'm sure he has reasons (and like others have indicated, getting phat lootz from Clear Channel is probably reason number one).

Hoover did what the public wanted (via the Congress) and look how that turned out. Roosevelt took an election and did what he thought best (between WPA and TVA type programs and WWII) and got us out of the Depression.

  4. Re:Vox Populi on House Overturns FCC Media Consolidation Plan · · Score: 1

Vox Populi is a nice idea, but there's a reason we have a Republic, and not a Democracy in the US. It's to prevent the tyranny of the mob. That's also the reason why the Senate has a longer term than the House: to prevent nutty things from happening as easily.

Note: this has nothing to do with my feelings on the topic at hand. Just pointing out that someone already decided that true democracy is not the best thing.

Not the parent poster, but I've done similar. If I'm printing to something bigger than a 5x7, it's nice to have the extra resolution. If I'm going to run it through the Gimp, it's nice to have the extra resolution. I've only had my camera since Father's day, but have 3 128MB cards. Last week, I filled one up with about a half dozen photos. Only kept three or four, wound up here. Still playing with the camera, so I'm not sure if I'll print any of them, but there is a reason to grab the extra pixels.

Thanks for the heads up on the sharpness. I'll see if I can adjust it, but I think it's a remote only adjustment, and the original remote disappeared about... two weeks after getting a puppy (who is almost five years old now). Didn't destroy whole thing, just the little ir LED. If I had had any sense, I'd have replaced just that part.

Oh, and in that case, out of 300 discs, I've never seen an artifact then. Seen plenty on parent's Direct TV, so I know what I'm looking for.

One of my profs when getting my MBA used to work at IBM. He regaled us with a tale of a division he worked for. Seemed that it was too expensive for a couple of engineers to be fired. But it was too expensive to keep them around. Someone decided to put them in empty cubicles in some basement somewhere. And their job was to sit there. Eight hours per day, five days per week. Didn't have phones, no computers, nothing. Newspapers, magazines, books, not allowed. Apparantly, 95% of the guys quit within two weeks.

Unfortunately, these guys were engineers. An executive (particularly with an MBA) would have no trouble being this sedentary and collecting a paycheck.

  15. Re:"Best tool for the job" on RMS Calls On Linux Developers To Replace BitKeeper · · Score: 0, Troll

That said, a proprietary tool can never be the best for the job if the author/copyright holder is a complete dick. If it was known that the author of BitKeeper was a dick before Linus started using it, then the tool should not have been introduced; regardless, it is clear now that the guy IS a dick, and therefore RMS is absolutely correct in urging the kernel developers to play chicken and either force BK to play nicely with others or shoot the moon and wind up losing its free advertising.

Here's the match to light my karma on fire:

    Linus is a dick.

He has few people skills, and comes off nearly as charming as BillG when talking to non-geeks. Linus isn't trained, and doesn't know how to deal with regular human beings. So, he seems like a dick. OTOH, this gives him the freedom to have developed a complete meritocracy. Sure, it ruffles feathers, but most things fall by the wayside when quality rises to the fore.

Similarly, the BK guy is also a dick. His code does what it wants, under his rules. But it's a damned good tool for the job. If it weren't, Linus would be using subversion or CVS.

Finally, RMS is a dick. The problem is that his position is primarily political, not technical. In that realm, you *must not* be a dick. All he'll succeed in doing is bringing out lots of dickish behavior. Perhaps some dick with skillz will code a better replacement. Then, likely, Linus will use it. Until then, merit wins.

    In closing:
    Larry McVoy is a dick.
    Linus is a dick.
    RMS is a dick.
    I'm probably a dick.
michael is a dick (you are what you eat. Oh, and here comes the pro-michael toads to burn some precious, precious karma:)
