The problem is that (assuming Cringely is on target) Microsoft is ditching a few things (Netscape plugins, Java) that violate this patent. But they are not ditching (or haven't yet) ActiveX/OLE in the browser, which performs a very similar action (at least WRT the patent).

I don't have a problem with M$ ditching some of that compatibility. But I do have a problem with doing it to force 'us' to IE5.5.net.

Works for me. I pile EVERYTHING on my desk. Know where in the pile the important stuff is. Don't tell anyone else how the pile is arranged. Nobody will touch your stuff for fear of having to clean it up when it falls.

Many people will bitch, but the trick is to know how the pile works. People will ask me for some 'important' piece of paper, assuming it will take an hour to find it. It doesn't. If they complain, the answer is "it only took me a second to get it, what's your problem".

Another good trick is to keep extra cards lying around (I have an abundance of ISA SCSI cards and NIC's. Almost useless, but most people are afraid to touch them. Ergo, my stuff isn't touched.)

What she doesn't like is not being able to dump the books to the hard drive, and then put them back on. That is B$. The other thing she doesn't like is paying nearly (or more than) cover price for books without paper. Why pay $15 for an eBook when you can get the paperback for $10?

These are the real questions. The rest (the appeal to the Supremes) is/was expected. Appealing to the Supremes does not preclude other actions, so why wouldn't they do this? Due to the findings of the appeals court, the worse that happens in this appeal is that it goes back to district court for a new rememedy.

I only found RTS games after playing the free version of Red Alert a few months before the sequel came out. What the hell was I missing? Just as I was about to dump Windows entirely, I found this lovely game. (And then shortly after, found Baldur's Gate).

Anyway, one of the reasons I was going to drop Windows games is that it would be much cheaper to get a console, and ignore the buy, upgrade, repeat cycle of 3d cards.

Things worked well. Until I bought Black and White. My poor SLI Voodoo2 setup was no longer sufficient. (of course, the 600mHz proc. might have had something to do with that as well:) So, out went the Voodoo, in went a GeForce MX (or whatever the bottom of the line, cheap shit GeForce is) and it works. Quite well for B&W. But that won't be for long.

Which is also okay. Turns out that I can use some of that ancient 3dfx crap in a Mame box. And if that doesn't work... Hell, for as much as the GeForce3 costs, I could at least one actual arcade game. Throw in a new motherboard, processor, etc. and I can get one of the pins that I've been wanting.

And the people in the neighborhood (okay, the kids) much prefer the arcade games when they drop by. (No, I'm not a molester. I'm just immature. Arcade games are in the garage, and the door is open if any neighborhood kids are playing. And I have their parents' numbers.)
