Which ways are less stupid than hiding your packets in a stream that's believed to be innocuous and even if the voice packets are monitored, your hidden data would presumably remain hidden?

Posting as AC to slashdot where you will be moderated -1, Troll, and your message will never be read by the unknowing yet will be transmitted within a seemingly innocent data stream to thousands of people, thus providing you a covert data channel where it's not known who is the real recipient of the data and it's not possible to prove the covert message was received.

Unless you've got a considerably smaller UID to come back with, I'm going to have to say that your longing for some greater, better, more wonderful time is complete and total horseshit. Slashdot has always sucked. At times, off and on, it has sucked slightly less. At the time, the Halloween documents were relevant to day-to-day operations, Wil Wheaton still posted here, my grits were hot, and Natalie Portman left parts of me petrified.

  13. Re:Used to never test on Ask Slashdot: Do You Test Your New Hard Drives? · · Score: 1

My first help desk job included every computer in the company. We had a server drive fail, so I had Compaq send a replacement. The new arrival didn't work. So then I spent more time looking at RAID configuration and such, but we got a second replacement. That one didn't work either. But I tested it on arrival. The third replacement worked fine, just when I was worried it was something stupid I was missing. Two DOA RMAs for the same part. And yes, that's happened to me again since that first time.

I test every "used" part as if it's suspect. The question was about new, but they are still new to me.

But the third drive burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up. And that's what you're going to get, Lad, the strongest drive in the entire organization.

I am using examples that include video cards (4 of them, in my case.) My OS uses video cards to accelerate mainline processes; furthermore, this is done through a standard system mechanism and is relatively easy to incorporate in a considerable range of code; end users see benefits commensurate with the graphics engines they have installed. The processors in graphics cards are specialized for certain types of operations that can be very useful, and in use will significantly outperform, general purpose CPU instructions.

It really doesn't matter (other than as a market force) if gamers are buying cards that can handle more display activity than they're throwing at them. What matters is if these cards (and CPUs, for that matter) are overpowered in all places they are utilized, and the answer to that is flat-out no.
