    No problem with the DVDs. I've since had about six other DVD players, running in price from $19 to $300. All of them let the text based CC pass through to my NTSC tv just fine.

    I've been boycotting them since the late 90's. I bought a DVD player from them. Rather than passing through captioning information, it munged it so that it could only be displayed with their craptastic system. The font was small and had no background box, making it unreadable in many scenes and useless for my then fiance. When contacted about it, I got a brushoff. Nobody wanted to listen to the problems. Except Best Buy, who cheerfully refunded me my money.

    In going for the cheap joke, I let reality get in the way. Oh well.

    FWIW, if you include iOS devices (which I was also thinking of) the percentages start to look pretty bad.

    Lincoln won a war against some slaveholders. Speaking as a lifelong Maryland resident, I can say with certainty that slavery was alive and well following Lincoln's death. The next issue is Lincoln's suspension of habeus corpus.

    But I suspect that the GP meant the tired old 'states' rights' argument that was so popular with stalwarts like Strom Thurmond and George Wallace.

    I think you mean 529's, not 538's. 538 is the title of Nate Silver's blog.

    NC has a pretty decent black population, and the tri-cities area has a lot of young, urban SWPL types, many northern transplants looking for biotech work.
