I have to agree. Any oldsters out there will be nodding to themselves and thinking "beta vs vhs". Better does not always win when "pretty close" costs less and is readiy available.

We'd all probably scream bloody murder if this weren't a free (beer) codec and someone else was pushing it on us. But we're symbolically behind it for just that reason; it is free. And I doubt we're all ready to toss out our Rios and Archoses and Nomads. I know I'm not. MP3 will take the same course as CD audio I predict -- "it's good enough, let's go with it".

I believe a lot of the same things unformed said and I also believe /.ers understand this better than most.
Or to put it in NRA speak:
Computers don't turn kids into social outcasts, but socially outcast kids will turn to computers.

Sure, kids might get wrapped up in games, yadda yadda yadda. But, well, it's the same argument against TV and it's not the technology that's at fault. "She spends too much time in her room readin' them poetry books", "He spends too much time in front of the TV", "they spend too much time on the computer". These are age old complaints and the objects are just replaced from time to time.
When all kids are immersed in computing, then the whole 'social misfit' thing will center around something else since computers will be (are) so common place. Then something else will come along. Perhaps "He spends to much time in VR, he never watches media with his siblings like he used to".

    ((shrug)) Life goes on.

"And the recent security problems with Linux, coupled with the lack of key enterprise elements in the new kernel, really call into question whether Linux should be used at all," Miller added.

I really wanted to thank you, at first, for your candor. Then I looked a little deeper (and re-read the answers). But despite that, I want to say thanks for having the guts to jump in here.

As for the business use comments... Microsoft knows very well this is not true. An extremely large and influential component manufacturing and design company (OK, maybe THE biggest in the IT industry) took this very step not long ago because of issues with Microsoft platforms not living up to their promise (and DESPITE plenty of futzing around by MS support personnel and engineers). They have been helped to realize this platform shift with the assistance of another extremely influential hardware vendor who has embraced Linux (3 letters. Starts with "I"). But... don't mention this to Mr. Gates... he lost his cool over it once (Oh, man, what fun!), I'm sure he'd rather not be reminded.

  18. Security - Microsoft's Current Stance? on Windows Marketing Executive Doug Miller · · Score: 1

Back in Oct. of 1999, Microsoft posted an article entitled "Linux Myths" (http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/news/msnw/L inuxMyths.asp). In this article, much was said about NT security versus Linux security and the opinion stated was that NT was far more secure than Linux.

Given the number of patches released in response to exploits found (and very often implemented by real world hackers/crackers/script kiddies) involving the Windows NT OS (as well as Microsoft products for NT), does Microsoft still hold the opinion that their product(s), and in particular their server platform, is more secure? Even in light of the ever-increasing security features implemented in Linux in the intervening period? Even in light of the continued exploitation of Microsoft platforms?

The article further implies a lower TCO and cites the re-training of engineers to .... understand.... Linux. Does this article still hold true in Microsoft's eyes given the proliferation of Linux adopters and supporters in the IT industry?

Thanks for having the guts to jump in this shark pit.
