Redhat's first releases were ripped off (and I'm not using that in a negative way) from Slackware way back even though RH is almost a completely different disto now. Mandrake (Now Mandriva) was also ripped off from Redhat before they went their own direction.

    Why is this any different?

What Redhat Brings to the table is mainly service and support (that is what they are charging for). Sure..they do A LOT of great development work (and that's a good thing) it may even be more than just about any distro out there but distros all use the GPL'd changes (or sometimes whole GPL'd software) from each other. I've seen code from Redhat in SuSE, SuSE in debian, Redhat in Mandriva, ect....it goes on.

There is nothing wrong with CentOS as long as they don't use RH logos.

We should buy (the U.S.) stuff that can't be repoed by overseas creditors or countries (Physical items). Want that wall across the southern border...20 billion? 30? NO prob! Need 4 or 5 more Space shuttles? Give everybody GigE to the house! Put it on credit! What are they gunna do (the overseas banks)? They can't repo the stuff if the U.S. defaults. And after we default they'll STILL loan money to us because people still live here and still make money.

You want to see cable and DSL operators go nutz with foaming mouths, get your congressman to introduce a bill requiring multicast to be enabled on all routers and switches, and add a provision punishing ISP's who knowingly degrate UDP.

Many people think that multicast is a failure and does not work, fact of the matter is, it's deployed WORLD WIDE on the backbones of both Internet and Internet2. I can tell you from my own experience that it works as advertized (on I2)

  21. Multicast works....it's political on Cringely on P2P vs Streaming Data Centers · · Score: 3, Informative

Multicast has been deployed on Internet2 for some time now. I've watched 720p streams multicasted from Europe with no problem.

The problem with deploying it on the commercial Internet is political. Backbone commercial Internet providers have had multicast on for a LONG time. ISP's that give you your home broadband connection which are mostly cable TV operators and companies like verizon don't want to provide a cost effective way for content providers on the net to deliver video. They would rather charge you for their "middleman" service. It's not like they don't know how to enable it, all they need to do is enable it on their switches and routers.

Most cable operators use multicast already to stream the channels through their set top boxes.

In Britain The BBC is working with ISP's to multicast to broadband connections. That would REALLY be nice if something similar happened here (In the U.S.)

  22. Couple of comments about Dell cheepo systems on Another Ars Ultimate Budget Box · · Score: 1

There are several VERY important things to consider when buying a cheepo Dell.

Yes it will essentially do email and web just as well as the ars box but....

    1) The dell probably has onboard video and NO AGP OR PCI-Express slot so you can upgrade the video

    and

    2) The CPU will not be upgradable.

I bought a Dell for my mother and did'nt realize that the motherboard did'nt have an AGP slot on it (big bummer).

The ars box can be upgraded with faster AMD socket 939 processors if needed and can upgrade the video card. So 4 years down the road you will be able to upgrade this system to run Vista (or OS X hopefully one day) fairly well.

On the other side I'd argue all sorts of things like how would you know what files exactly are being traded since torrent names don't have to match the file names, and how do you know what that torrent file is without downloading it first.

In the end it really depends on which judge they get. If they can convince the judge that it's reasonable to assume that a torrent name with references to copyrighted material is in fact probably copyrighted material, well then they are screwed.
