yea..cradles would be nice but are phone specific. It will be more likely that sprint/verizon will partner with a company like Kenwood or Aiwa and some online radio stations like Virgin...Sirrus and XM could be forward looking and allow access over the internet though the units if people don't want to use satelite.
Watch what happens to satelite radio...it will be a pre-cursor to what happens with video.
I can already take my phone/PDA, load a streaming media player and stream virgin atlantic classic radio through my cell companies unlimited data services at 160Kbs. Take the audio mini-jack out of my PDA, add a power adapter so it does not drain the juice and I can plug that directly into my car stereo system. Presto! The collection of radio stations at broadband speeds are available via my car. On top of that, with 768Kb/s upstream from my cable modem I'm able to access via teh web my ENTIRE music collection at home and have it streamed to my car.
I predict within 3 years (probably MUCH sooner) you will be able to buy a head unit for your car with either A) cell phone electronics on it or B) a cradle for your phone so the head unit can receive streaming audio from the internet.
You need to go back and read the WHOLE SENTENCE of my post before replying. I'm not talking about the dual boot option, I'm talking of products like parallax and future VM systems that will run windows on the same SCREEN as OS X.
Somebody explain to me why, once the Majority of Mac's are Intel based a windows developer would port their app over to OS X if you could run the windows version of the app at native speeds on the same screen as OS X?

I think one of the main problems with a statement like "LINUX is fat" is that MANY people do not differentiate between the LINUX kernel and the distribution that uses LINUX as it's kernel. Technically "LINUX" is only the kernel only but many people refer to running "LINUX" when the are really running RedHat, Slackware, Debian, Ubuntu, ect.
You could easily make the argument that many LINUX distributions are "FAT" but the kernel? It's possible to compile a LINUX kernel with only the modules you need (either included or as external loadable modules). I find it hard to believe that it's FAT in that sense since you can still run LINUX stripped down on a 386. There are a whole host of embedded devices that are small relative to the negraponte's system and run the LINUX kernel just fine.
Find a NICE big asteroid that could be "nudged" with selective nuclear strikes (we don't need to destroy it...just nudge it, so the further out we find it the less we'll need to nudge it).
After the asteroid hits the surface hopefully much of that atmosphere would get ejected into space. Now I'm not saying that afterwards it would be simple to terraform but after the impact (and of course waiting some time to see how the planet takes it) it might be easier.
Plus....planetary scientists would LOVE to see what happens to venus if a large rock hit it. Personally I can't think of a better candidate. There might be silicone based life forms living in molten lava...but I doubt it.
With hardware becomming cheap It would not surprise me if EVERYTHING becomes wrapped in SSL or something like SSL within 5 (or possibly 10) years.
You can still look at traffic analysis and build models of behaviour based on throughput and other indirect data, but as long as keys remain safe and nobody manages to "hack" block ciphers with large keys I doubt anybody will be able to look inside encrypted packets (Tin Foil Hat exception: Unless the CIA/NSA/Men in Black know how!)
Their last version came out in March of last YEAR.....what exactly have they been doing since then? I've not heard a peep about what their next version will have in it.
It just occured to me that software vendors could write OS X software designed to access the windows drive and clean it of viruses, spyware and other nasty stuff. Definitely a money maker.
Many sysadmins responsible for desktop deployment might want to move to something other than windows, but the sad fact of the matter is, if something goes wrong as a result of a virus/worm/hole it's easy to say to management "Everybody in windows deals with this kind of stuff". If you take a risk with OS X or LINUX and the migration goes horrible YOU will get canned even if it was not your fault.
Given the risk factors most people will play it safe and just blame windows.
Yes...but many people are lazy and would rather start a download before going to bed than get in their car. The argument that people will not download films due to the size ignores the fact that it's already happening. Just because YOU are not doing it does not mean other people are also not doing it.
This may be a bit offtopic but I wonder what would happen if MS decided to break with the 100% backwards compatibility goal with Vista? Sure...the software vendors would moan and bitch but what would they do? It's not like they would jump ship.
I'd imagine it would just delay the adoption of Vista vs WinXP, but it would STILL be adopted.
Let's not also forget that Eastern games are all done in the "Anime" style of animation. I'm NOT dumping on Anime. It's cool.
But the all Anime all the time in all videogames gets old after a while. The amount of games that do their graphics in non-anime are for the most part non-existant on console platforms. PC games are better but Anime style still dominates.
For all of you people who think playing a videogame cannot be as addictive as drugs or can't really do harm..remember..a Korean recently DIED of exaustion playing WOW.
I've read a bunch of posts talking bout the BSD license and debating the finer points of ethics and morality and what people are required to do vs what they should do.
Well..
I'll throw in my 2 cents (and another 10 bucks to OpenSSH).
Contributing some $$$ to a good cause like the work that the OpenBSD and OpenSSH organization does just seems like the right thing to do. I'd hope that other people feel the same. If not, then it's a shame (my opinion of course)
Clients? The Clients of a desktop OS in a business are the employees. Since when does management change something primarily because it's what the employees want? If management feels the current environment works, they are NOT going to change.
You would have to show SIGNIFICANT cost savings (On paper and they'll probably make you sign your name next to it!). All the other points you listed have been said before, but the PAIN threshold for businesses using windows is VERY high. Until the pain of running windows is higher than the pain of moving to a new platform, it aint gunna happen.
I am a UNIX/LINUX admin. I agree with all your points about why UNIX/LINUX is better than windows but the market is too mature at the present time for massive change to occur.
Besides, nobody gets fired for choosing Windows when something goes wrong (virus, security breach, ect..). If you were a manager who sold this to your CEO and the migration went horrible...it wouldn't matter if it was your fault or not, you'd get canned.
Most managers are not going to take that risk when they don't have to....not without some huge return to match the risk.
I understand your point, but ballmer and crew understand that time is on their side. They can AFFORD to delay the release of windows as long as they like until the release is in a state they like.
Let's be honest here...as long as windows maintains it's current market share it does not matter.
If you work in a windows shop, and run into your CIO or IT head cheese ask this simple question "What would have to happen for you to SERIOUSLY consider dumping windows for some other desktop OS platform"
Chances are they will just give you a blank stare. That alone should tell you that ANY delay in the next version of windows will have ZERO effect on Microsoft's market.

If it's another offering at 320x200 I could care less. The vendor that starts airing shows at DECENT resolutions (above 640x480) will have my $$$.

I am disturbed.
Revenues will not collapse if they are successful in moving everybody to the "subscription" model...ala "Enterprise" agreements.
My organization swallowed it, now they just pay a yearly fee and get whatever Microsoft has released.
