  2. Re:As Linus Said... on FSF Denies Latest Apple Attempt at APSL · · Score: 1

(S)he who writes the code chooses the license, and anyone who complains about it is just a whiner.

Thats not the issue at hand here. The issue is that Apple claims that the APSL is an "open source" license. The FSF owns tradmark and controls usage of the term "open source", which apple is using. The FSF is "whining" because the APSL does not meet their definition of "open source", and therefore does not meet the licencing conditions for the term "open source" (available on the FSF webpage).

This is just like Apple holding trademark on the term "Works With iMac". Apple has strict conditions under which you may, and resctrictions on how you can use that term and related graphic devices. Without this trademark Windows 98 could say on the package "Works With iMac*." as long as it also had "*Requires emulation software" somewhere on the package, but they do not have the right to use either the phrase "Works With iMac" or even the word "iMac" without proper licencing from Apple.

The cassini probe doesn't exist. Heres how they made those sounds:

    1. walk out back with cheap microphone, record crickets, amplify till they're loud enough
    2. give recording to several well-known rap stars who have recently fallen on hard times. get them to sign an NDA so they don't talk about why they've been remixing crickets for the past three weeks
    3. take remixes, splice them all together, run through noise reduction and high pass filters to remove added bass beat.
    4. now run that through some cheesy compression for that "outer space" sound, decompress and post the uncompressed result.

there ya go, instant space sounds. With the right marketing you'll be able to hit #1 on the charts - instant sucsess.

Yes, it is a sad thing that apple pulled all their old QD3D stuff from the website. At one point they had a new version of Gerbils that had (sit down, hold on) tunnels, water, about about 8 new track pieces! I misplaced my copy of it however, so sad.

I do have my "page of ancient QD3D stuff" which has some of the demo apps from the "QuickDraw 3D - The Glitz, The Glamor, The 1.0 Demos" CD, along with partial gerbals source which was in a development kit a while back. This page can be found at inio's page of ancient QuickDraw 3D stuff.

  13. This is just a 2D voxel effect. on Revolution in Graphics? · · Score: 1

This stuff has been around for years. With the exception of speed however this particular implementation looks fairly nice. It doesn't have many artifacts on steep surfaces (thanks to the linear interpolation probably), although the distance resolution dropping artifacts are quite noticable.. Mac users may want to check out Matt's Fract for a more flexible, much faster and open source (tho not public domain) implementation of this algorithm.

  14. Kill trolls without moderation points on On the Subject of Trolls · · Score: 1

Now before you decide I'm an idiot and that trolls would just abuse this, listen for a sec here.

Heres how it works, any registered user can specify that an comment is a troll by just clicking a link in the header. This pops up a window* with options such as downward moderation, and maybe upwards moderation, whatever. If you specify downward moderation it subtracts 1/20th of a point from the score this to a given article. This would resolve the waste of moderation points on trolls and also not let trolls abuse it if they had a dynamic IP. The loss from people within the same subnet would be minimal I think, as there are pleanty of users out there, and I don't know of any ISPs that have more than two or threee class-Cs for a given modem pool.

  15. of Hilbert fractals and Golomb Rulers. on Fractal Antennas more efficient? · · Score: 1

HIllbert fractals might make a good antenna if you're looking for total length in a condensed area, but the lengths of the straight segments in them are almost all the same length, and the ones that are different are powers of two above the smallest ones. Another thought that came to my mind ist that Golomb Rulers, specifically Optimal Golomb Rulers, might be quite usefull here...

You don't say I'm not an expert and that I'm an idiot because I'm saying it right here.

  16. Two simple (allbeit long-term) steps on "Usenet Death Penalty" against AOL · · Score: 1

    1. AOL trial accounts don't have access to the internet, period. A lot of local and semi-local ISPs offer short-term access for free.
    2. AOL software doesn't have inlinded pre-configured internet facilities. It can automatically set up your internet access but it doesn't install configure a newsreader to use it. If you want usenet you have to install and configure it yourself.

The chance this'll happen is less than the chance that a bug in Windows 2000 will re-write Bill Gate's will putting my name in the "beneficairies" slot just before he prints it and then he gets killed the next day, but then again, who knows.

  17. Score pool. on Several Slashdot Notes · · Score: 1

... save up points in a pool for a few weeks, then give themselves a high score for a "first post" or something silly like that.

I don't think this would really be an issue, by doing this you would use/lose some, if not all, of your pool points. Even if you had a point left in your pool (two unused +1s on prior posts) it would only take 3 -1s -- from a 2 to a -1 -- on that post to knock you down to a negative pool, putting you in the same position as an AC. This situation would persist on all future posts until you do something worthy of some more +1s.

I'm not sure how well this would work, but I don't think it would be that bad. The only problem I can see is some cyclic effects with certain (what some might call "macho") posters.
