This does exist. Actually it's even better. It's called rproxy. It uses rsync, to only send you the differences between the page you want to see, and something from your cache. If you've got access to a machine with a much better internet connection then your own, it's a nice way to speed up surfing. At one time we used it to connect a lan (+- 50 people), through a 33K6 phoneline to a remote system with a cable connection. Browsing speed was remarkable. It works especially good for weblogs and other sites with only small changes between the pages.
I can't speak for him, but I can speak for myself. He is a network admin, so I assume he was involved in adminning the ftp servers. I administer some ftp servers that are mainly used for warezing. I do it for fun. People pay for big hardware and good connections, and I'm allowed to play with it. Hell, I don't do Microsoft Windows, so I can't even use the software that goes through my servers.
Ok let's put some things together.
What AOL has:
-Largest online community
-Rumours of upcoming Linux support. Long time ago, maybe vapour.
What Sonay has:
-Most (?/very) popular game console
-Hardware that runs Linux.
What they both have:
-Microsoft is enemy no 1
What Microsoft wants:
-Take over AOL's community
-Get XboXes (=WebTerminals) into houses
What I think is that Microsoft uses the Xboxes into peoples houses and at some point tie them into the Microsoft Network. This would be a lot of competetion for AOL.
Using Sony's hardware (PS2) they can run there rumoured Linux software without needing Microsoft for anything, and they are using Microsofts own trick against it.
Sony profits from having a strong partner that delivers lots of added value for there hardware.
The bonus for us would be that we probably also can run AOL's linux software (oh yes, I have been waiting for that . . . . NOT!) and get a lot of Linux enabled PS2's (yes:) .
Common guys, get a life. Most people don't even own the hardware to run a browser >= 5. Even in Europe and the US many people still depend on old (outdated ?) hardware, let alone less rich country's.
Maybe I should download the lynx sources, change a few lines and beef up the version number to 6.4 or something.
BTW, if you want a cool _graphical_ browser for the Linux _and_ DOS console, check out http://www.arachne.cz .
What I was wondering about, can this thing run anything, or do programma's need to be written for it. I couldn't find a clear answer to that skimming through the website. However a example job from the manual does suggest so:
#!/bin/sh
# This is a simple example of a CODINE batch script
#
# Print date and time
date
# Sleep for 20 seconds
sleep 20
# Print date and time again
date
# End of script file
If it can truly run just any programm it would be really cool.
The reason why gets such a kick from CWEB is that he wrote it. He wrote it to write TeX. It's very nice indeed, although it takes a bit of time to get used to. If you want a nice example, take a look at TeX:)
I'm pretty sure this is a fake.
1 Bill would never use the word FUD, especially not the way it's done in the mail.
2 He knows to much about Slashdot, KDE, Gnome and even Harmony (raise hands, how many of you remebere that one?)
3 "MacOS never really concerned me" Bill is to smart to say such things about a living competitor.
4 No one but open source zealots use the word zealot.
5 "Any one that has programmed professionally knows that at the end of a long day of coding, the last thing you want to do is go home and program more for free. I am a programmer myself, and I feel I am accurate in that statement". I've read enough about Bill to know he does like coding.
6 etc. etc. etc.
If this isn't fake Bill should get himself a Slashdot account and become our leading Troll.
Yes, yes, yes, etc....
I'm so happy. KDE will officially get into Debian and discussions with Gnome people are shortend by at least 40%.
Thank you God, now how about that Ferarri I asked?
Whaddaya mean, I get it on the same day as Microsoft break up and the 2.4 kernel?
I do not agree. Myself I know many people only by there nicks. From others I know their real name but almost never use it. Likewise many people don't know my real name. But what is the problem with that? "Real" names are chosen by parents, not the individual that has to use it for the rest of his life. A nick is not official so can easily be changed when it is no longer usefull. Also it is possible to have multiple nicks. Very usefull. Lastly, theres nothing new or geeky to nicks. People always have used nicks. The Romans always used their nicks. They didn't even bother to think of fancy first names. There were only a dozen or so common names. It even was common to call a child "Second" or "Third". Nicks were what they used, eg Caesar means "The Bald", Cicero = "Frog", Caligula="Boots", etc, etc, etc
Whats in there that can't be done with an NFS mounted home dir? Still I like the idea. I'm waiting for the day this thing gets cracked and everyone can see the pr0n stored in Bill Gates profile. BTW how is this supposed to be pronounced? "dot-net", "point-net", just "net" or something else?
> Let's just say that having a bright idea and actually implementing that idea are two very different things. How many people in the/. audience have clever pet inventions that they just don't have the time, or the skill, to make a eality?
I've been thinking about this for a bit. A lot of good ideas are lost because of technical problems. Myself I have a big list of things I want to do "when know how to". How about creating an "idea database". Anyone with a good idea can enter it. Others can browse those idea's to find a solution to a problem they have. If they find someone they can contact the original author to discuss it further and/or help him implementing it.
We already have such thing. It is called the hampsterdance. It is performed by geeks whenever they are scared or hurt. It alerts other geeks which will run away screaming. It is especially powerfull when performed in groups. As with many behavioural paterns a symbolized incarnation of this dance is part of the geeks mating dance. At special events (eg a major kernel release) young geeks gather in a terminal room and dance the dance from 0:00 to 6:00AM. Regional variants include waving with PDA's, drinking coke and connecting ethernet cable.
> Whilst I know that/.ers seem to think that only they should be allowed to use PCs, Microsoft pushed the idea that everyone could benefit from a PC, and it worked, because people wanted that. Taking the risk of being called a zaelot or troll, I do think most computer owners shouldn't own a computer. Atleast not in it's current form. I blame MS for creating the illusion that computers are easy. Many of you will agree with me that computer aren't easy. Allthough we know how to use them, most Windows users don't. Those inexperienced and untrained users are supposed to be their own sysadmins and are handed over all the tools to unknowingly ruin their system. Flash back to 10 years ago. DOS was the leading OS sometimes complemented with Windows to provide a grahpical interface for programms. All administration was done from the commandline. Normal users needed to know less then 10 commands to do their stuff (start programms & manage files). It took a handbook to learn more commands, like format. Users typing "format c:" just to see what it did wasn't very common, most users didn't know the command existed. Enter Windows. Suddenly computers were easy. The destructive power of a computer was just a mouse-click away. And users do know how to exploit it. Most Windows users I know are not happy with their computers, they think of it as a necessary evil. That is why I don't like MS, they make people angry. The second argument behind my anti-MS views is their disctruction of innovation. Allthough MS droids love to brag about the new featurs in Windows X, MS hardly invents anything themselves. Name one major feature that MS didn't buy of "borrow" from someone else. They take over other companies that made something good. Once a company has been aquired MS management takes over and say byebye to innovation.
> There does exist a prgram that is supposed to convert RPMs to a.tar.gz file that you can simply unzip (in your root directory?) to install the files. It's called alien and converts between.rpm,.deb,.tgz and.slp (Stampede) .
Allthough their name is a *little* ill chosen, I support their ideas. As a Debian user I've often been irritated by the RedHat-only mindset many company's seem to have. I understand that not every tech-support can know everything about all Linuxes, but in reality, how big are the differences? Most company's have only a limited range of products and those products use only a small part of Linux. Most programms won't need anything from the system but libc. Maybe it needs to add a few libraries or configuration files to the system, but the location for these files is fixed. Anyone can show me a distro that doesn't use/etc ? I can think of only a two "big" differences between distro's that are not likely to be changed by a sysadmin:
start-up scripts (SysV vs. BSD style)
package format (RPM != DEB, until alien comes along)
The AMD processor that interests me most is the Professional version, the one that supports multiple processors. I hope they do something innovating in this area. They made some great progress on processors, let's see if they can come up with some new ideas on multiple processors as well.
I'm not a very experienced coder so maybe this is a stupid question, but what is x86-specific. I know assembly and assuming data-types have a certain size (int==32 bits) is bad. But those don't seem to be used a lot in most projects. What else is platform specific? Are there archticture depending functions in libc ?
Wasn't the general idea behind law and governement "By the people, for the people"? If we're not talking about laws, who will be? Correct, lawyers and politicians. Now what do we get, laws designed by lawyers, for lawyers.
The IANAL thingy is just to alert people not to use anything from the article without checking it with a lawyer.
For a long time processors have been the most important part of a computer. At school I was taught that some day in the future RAM would become the most expensive part, not processors. When this occured a major change in computing would happen, using more processors instead of more RAM. I think this will happen very soon. Prices of processors are dropping so fast because of this speed race. RAM OTOH stays expensive. We are allready seeing a steady increase in dual processor boxes. Does anyone have any ideas about how this change from lots of memory to lots of processors will look like.
I did not suggest to make the application skinnable. I hate skins. But skins are an _example_ of partly open systems that are used to bind people to your product. Once you made the step to Mods & skins the step to open source is _smaller_. And yes, the GPL makes things cool.
> Also his companies application 'doesn't ring a bell' with you? Please reread my original post, I never stated I should know his project, but the original author wrote it was a "timer system". BTW the insightful part might be about my suggestion to take a look at Netscape or Sun and have nothing to do with skins.

Anyone willing to write a distributed.net client & server for this. Downloading new robots seems to be much more fun than donwloading packets.
I'd better go register linux.eu . No more of the problems we got into when http://www.linux.nl was suddenly registered by a company.
