  1. Work and Master's on Go For a Masters, Or Not? · · Score: 1

I was lucky enough to get a fellowship from my company when I first graduated. I had some intern/co-op experience and waited a year before getting into a Master's program. Most companies have a reimbursement program for advanced degree course work. You may not have enough experience to really determine which path you should be on for a good future. Best to take a year working and decide if you really want to do what you are already doing even more or if there are changes you want to make in that path.

  2. Happy to have a similar environment to class on What Did You Do First With Linux? · · Score: 1

I bought Slackware at the local computer store and installed it on my machine. I had to dual boot because the CD-ROM was connected to the sound card. However, all my engineering classes used UNIX instead of Windows, so I was happy to start poking around my own system and try to figure out how to make everything (or most everything) work. It was fun.

I was in 7th or 8th grade at the time and my dad had a subscription to Sport Aviation. I wrote and received the technical sales information. I always wondered what happened to this product and company. I still have those CAD drawings of the ducted fans and the views of the vehicle. Too bad they couldn't get more traction.

On the other hand, I look at the way people drive and shudder to think about any moron flying one of these things. It was an interesting concept, but I don't want my neighbor taking off first thing in the morning. I also don't want to worry about structural damage because the kids next door are playing football and manage to damage the body.

Way back when I was growing up, we bought an Apple IIgs. After a while, my dad went for the memory upgrade with a battery back-up option. Remeber, this is about 12 years ago. It was nice because you didn't need to wait for the system to boot anywhere near as long.

Additionally, laptops take a similar concept and save the system memory image to hard drive and just read that in order to make your boot time a little shorter when you are away from the machine and it powers down.

  5. 10 Digit in Atlanta on 11 Digit Dialing Comes Home to New York · · Score: 2, Informative

We have had 10 digit dialing here in Atlanta since before I moved here 2+ years ago. Nice thing about it is that if you are making a real long distance call, then you dial the 1-xxx-xxx-xxxx. Otherwise, you just dial area code + 7 digits. May not be really different, but it does seem nicer to me. I know what is long distance and what isn't automatically. Of course, we only have 3 area codes presently.

    Folks,

Some of you may not remember the MUDs from the early 90's, but this was the same kind of thing. I was in college and my freshman year I saw guys that were more than willing to stay up until 4 AM waiting for a campaign to start. So many guys wanted so badly to become gods on the games that classes and life in general didn't matter. It really isn't like this is a new thing. It just has taken on a more public for with Ultima Online and EverQuest. No, I never got into the games. I tried, but it wasn't for me. I did have a computer though and that made me the guy to wake at 2 AM asking if I minded them playing for a while.

It really used to be hard to find the MUDs before they got shut down. Now you shell out to these people to get a bunch of pretty pictures to go with the adventure.

We have read recently that there may be laws on the books to speed up the appeals process for anit-trust style cases by sending it directly to the Supreme Court. Assuming that the case under Judge Jackson turns unfavorably for either side, which side would side would have the most to gain these laws? (i.e. Would MS prefer to drag thongs out or would they be confident that the Supreme Court would see things their way? Would the DOJ try to hamstring MS in the appeals process by forcing the decision to the top?)

Maybe in the long term, this will be "proven" or "disproven," but does anybody remember the phrase, "Assume a point mass ..." or "Assume a sphere ..." way back in school. What happens in the long run is that it's never as nice as you'd like. That's why there are other distributions than the Gaussian. Why should we assume that everything that can be found has already been found. Take the time to think, folks. Maybe this is like cold fusion, but maybe its like the transistor for model prediction. More advanced, more accurate models could be the result.

The Harrier is used in modern US military avaition, though not as extensively as the F-14, F-15, F-16, F-18, and F-117. There are laws on the books that require that all of a series of planes be completely decommissioned from military use before that variant is permitted to be sold for civilian usage. Pepsi would likely not have been permitted to obtain one as a result of these restrictions. The US government could have blocked obtaining the aircraft, even though it is of British manufacture.

I am too young at 25 to have known the problems that the Kennedys have faced in full without reading about them. I do understand, however, why so many people are heartbroken over the death of JFK Jr., his wife, and sister-in-law. The Kennedy clan is regarded by many as a form of royalty in our country, whether we will admit to it or not. True, the media in charge of presenting us the information is from the last generation. But humanity places all the hopes and responsibility on the shoulders of the next generation. JFK Jr. was that next generation of Kennedy.

He knew that he didn't want to fulfill the destiny of being an elected official at this time. Maybe in time he would have become a high ranking public official. When you have a famous family that tends toward one area it is sort of expected that you will follow in those footsteps. JFK Jr. did do some of that. He became a lawyer. But he failed the bar twice. After a short law career, he decided he wanted to do something different. That was when he started George. Maybe his celebrity sold the magazine better than the content, but you can't separate the man from the legends around him in our society.

Please don't light up the barbeque because I see a point to Katz piece. I believe he is trying to point out what has become of the rites of passage in our lives as a result of media and technology. Everyone wants to be first in demonstrating they have better knowledge. And our celebrities, especially the ones that are "young and attractive," are placed in a higher regard than those that perhaps deserve fame for their efforts over time.

JFK Jr. was a good person who learned to handle his fame well. He didn't act like he was owed anything. He didn't blame other people when things didn't go his way, as near as I can tell. I didn't know him, and maybe he could have been a great person in the political arenas, but we can never know that. Their time with us was good and they have travelled on. Leave it at that. Speculation to either side doesn't do anyone any good.

  11. Re:Some thoughts... on Cloning of extinct Huia bird approved · · Score: 2

    Regarding Dolly:

Researchers have shown that while Dolly is aging at an accelrated rate due to the use of older donor material, the natural born offspring of Dolly do not experience this problem. Cloning may make it "easy" to start a species, but as some have pointed out, diversification is a real issue. The lack of a diverse gene pool can cause severe genetic defect amplification. This happens in all species of animals. It shows up most effectively in dogs when a particular breed becomes popular a puppy mills are established to meet the demand. The result is poor vision, bad hips, poor immune systems, bad hearing, and even bad temperments.

While some defects can be beneficial to the regions, as has happened in humans based in disparate regions of the world, most are harmful to the species as a whole. If there is a significant portion of genetic material available to create a diverse gene pool for an extinct, near-extinct, or endangered species, then cloning should be considered. Otherwise, an inferior version of the species could be the result and as such could possibly become re-extinct easily as a result of genetic maladies.

  12. Re:The US Patent Law is interesting... on Petition against EU software patents · · Score: 1

Many companies in the US include clauses in their contracts for employment regarding the nature of patentable materials. Most of the wording surrounding this indicates that any and all patentable items the employees may develop, either at home or at work, are to be run past the company for first approval. By this process, if the item would be useful to the company they can determine if they want to take possession of it and elect out of patenting the information. Patents are often foregone in order to protect intellectual property from competitor's prying eyes.
