    Fear of nuclear power is part of the reason we still burn so much coal, oil and gas. This is why thousands die every year in mining, drilling, fuel transportation, domestic gas explosions, and millions die every year from air pollution.

    Even using big numbers for deaths at chernobyl (by estimating unmeasurable small risks and multiplying them by large populations (linear no threshold model)), nuclear is historically far safer than fossil fuels, and even safer than renewable. Reactors from the 70s are an order of magnitude safer than chernobyl (water cooled, graphite moderated is a terrible design) and modern designs are safer still (passive safety beats complex systems).

    The ubuntu installer lets you install over the top of an existing install without need a seperate /home. As long as you don't tick the format box, it will only delete system directories and leave things like home. Mint is based on ubuntu, so it might work.

    There are lots of reasons that the insurance company may decide not to pay out. You might be better just putting into a savings account each month.

    The one time you accidently leave a window open is the time you will get burgled, and the insurance will just laugh at you.

    My tip for insurance is to look through the conditions, implement all the security things they need, and put what you would spend on insurance in a savings account.

    Some people believe that rates of radioactive decay have changed with time, to allow the isotopic abundances that we see to be consistent with a 6000 year old universe and in order to be able to discount any archaeological or palaeontological result they don't like. Showing that nuclear physics was the same 2 billion years ago is unlikely to change their minds.

    (UK resident) I am happy for it to work automatically. Just like I am happy that if I need to see a doctor or go to A&E it is paid for automatically.

    Here you don't pay any income tax on the first ~£10k/a that you earn. To be paying enough tax to be worth complaining about you must be taking home enough money that I have little sympathy for you.

    But maybe some people like spending their life being annoyed about numbers.

    Most of your radiation exposure is from the radiation that's been in the rocks for ever and from cosmic rays. Releases from nuclear power are tiny compared. Radiation safety limits are incredibly conservative.

    RaspberryPI was designed to be cheap and makes various compromises, e.g. very low end CPU, low memory, USB connected 100MB ethernet, fussy PSU.

    Novena looks easily powerful enough for normal use, plus has nice features, FPGA, gigabit network.

    I have been using BTRFS for a while now with no problems. Even been through a couple of unclean shut downs, and unplugging mounted drives.

    I suspect that some of people reporting corruption have bad hardware. If they run ext4 the corruption happens, but they never notice. When they switch to BTRFS it spots the corruption quickly because of checksumming, and makes noise about it. Not to say that BTRFS is bug free, but neither is any other file system.

    Because BTRFS actually checks for corruption unlike older file-systems.

    you just need to allow the portal2 binary to use execheap. Now obviously its not good that portal2 uses execheap, but SELinux is fine grained enough to allow for it.

    I suggest that this is done to children (especially noisy ones) on airplanes, so study radiation doses from cosmic rays.

    Looks like there are some parts (MPEG decoding) that will never be open. But there's a plan to make a open source firmware that is sufficient to boot.

    If you open blender on a fresh install you see a 3d view of a cube, and nothing that looks much like a time line. I tried dragging a video file into various bits of the interface and nothing happened. A bit of hunting finds me a 'video sequence editor', that sounds right, but when I drop a clip on it says "Error: file '/foo/bar.mp4' could not be loaded". Useful. Ok, so lets assume that it actually meant 'I don't have a codec for MP4', so i'll try a webm. now I have a block with the name of my file on the time line. But there is no viewer in site. If I press play then a green bar moves across the time line, but I see nothing.

    Now I know that if I sat down and read the docs I could make a whole film using blender. But it is not the user friendly video editor that pitiiv is aiming to be.
