I type these keys quite often and my left wrist is grateful for this keyboard.

Then why does America still have such close ties to China?

The US could care less if a country is Communist as long as it allows Americans to own and exploit the resources within its borders. However, when the country tries to nationalize (seize) the privately held plantations, oil fields, mines, or etc. it is viewed as an act of war. China is a different beast since their resource (an almost limitless supply of Walmart plastic shit production plants) were already nationalized before the US entered into the market for them.

I'm not sure where you got that idea about corn prices. It would actually be nice if the demand for corn DID go up so we could end some of the subsidies here in the US.

Currently the only way it's at all profitable to grow corn is if the USDA pays you to do it. The USDA also pays farmers NOT to grow corn because we produce too much of it.

We stopped growing corn on our beef farm in the early 90's since it was cheaper to just buy corn and make only hay.

Anyway, back on topic, I think the major benefit of these batteries is no more heavy metals in the groundwater. The source of the sugar used is pretty irrelevant.

... why Brazilian sugarcane isn't being imported into the US. US sugarecane farmers, centered around Lake Okeechobee, FL, hold a lot of political clout.

Actually, I think it's more complicated than that. Most of the sugar we use in the US is not cane sugar at all. The primary sugar in processed foods here is made from corn (high fructose corn syrup) which is the main reason why our soda tastes like crap compared to soda bottled in Mexico where they use cane.

However replacing sugar with corn syrup is a relatively new phenomenon. Before this, and the reason that cane sugar is largely absent from our diet in the US, is that the sugar beet industry lobbied to legislate it that way. What most Americans identify as "sugar" is actually made from beets.

Yes, I do, because the warranty says they have to.

Also, Microsoft is not primarily a retailer, especially in this case (AFAIK you can't even buy one directly from Microsoft.) They're a manufacturer.

I guess it all depends on the text of the warranty. For instance, General Motors warranties it's diesel truck motors for a respectable 100,000 miles. They are very good about replacing the motors when they fail. However, when the brand new replacement motor is defective and fails a few thousand miles later, they tell you "tough luck, buy a new one".

But LMart only builds rockets to launch communications satellites. When confronted of this, MM points to the fact that the rockets have USAF logos to say that they do, in fact, make WMD's.

I have not seen the movie nor read about this particular controversy, but I'm forced to wonder:

If this plant did indeed make ICBMs would they admit to it? Isn't the location of such manufacturing facilities supposed to be kept secret?

I've been a baseball fan for a long time, but becoming less of one as it becomes harder to watch video of the games.

I live in MN, but I'm a Brewers fan. This is quite unfortunate since it makes it IMPOSSIBLE for me to watch Brewers games. My satellite provider will only let me watch Twins games (something i would have to pay extra for), but MLB has my MN zip code in the "blackout area" for the Brewers and Twins, so I can't watch games online through mlb.tv either.

Last year I paid ~$200 for something called MLB Season Ticket just to watch brewers games on satellite. This year it's not available.

I wrote an email to blackout@mlb.com explaining the situation, but the response was essentially "too bad, you're blacked out".

I think this strategy of milking advertising pennies is only hurting MLB in the long run since I doubt they will maintain younger fans now that its so hard to get their video content. Turning down my money and alienating fans like me probably isn't that wise for the short-run either.

  25. Re:The Ritual of Vinyl on Analog Revival Means Vinyl Will Outlive CD · · Score: 1

This is a very good point.

It seems like all of the anti-vinyl comments here are neglecting a very important point: people are using these vinyl recordings to listen to music. It's not like they're advocating doing your taxes on a mechanical calculator. It's all about how people want to enjoy the experience of listening to music.

Those arguing that listening to music on CD is better that vinyl on technical grounds may want to consider the following questions:

    • Is perfectly proportioned ethanol and water more enjoyable than a 12 year old whiskey?
    • Are omelettes cooked on teflon pans more enjoyable than those cooked on cast iron?
    • Is nicotine gum more enjoyable than a cuban cigar?

By any technical measure, the first in each example is always superior, but anyone with experience in both will probably choose the latter.

IMHO, listening to music on vinyl is a much more enjoyable experience simply because you have to be more involved in the process. It leaves you with a feeling of being somehow involved in production of the music since the act of playing the record takes so much of your focus.

I'm no audiophile. I listen to mp3/ogg in my car and on my computer, but if I want to really listen to music, I fire up the turntable.
