Now really... "There is a business who use Linux, and it really works!" I've seen stories like that some 3-4 years ago, when it was unusual to have Linux in productive use. Having a list of "companies who use it" today reminds me very much of the similar lists made for OS/2 (and those lists are shrinking...)
I'm not saying Scott Hacker is repeating what he read. He is not putting BeOS in the "Multi-Media" Corner. But he fails to see the very simple reason behind other journalists doing so.
A typical journalist, who can't tell emacs from a c-shell, won't be able to correctly describe the differences between, say, BeOS and Linux. But he can repeat what he read somewhere: That BeOS is a "Multi-Media-OS" and Linux is a "Server-OS", whatever that may be. This is the whole secret behind this type of typecasting.
Sounds like "banner ads in games" to me... No thanks! On the other hand: You kill few people in you favourite shoot-them-up and get a popup "now, wouldn't you like to try a real gun, just $24.95 at..." - that's nice.

Whether Win2000 comes out in 2000 or 2001, the fact is: rely on Wine now and you're in trouble when it's there. Kind of the same situation as the people who switched to OS/2 around '94, relied on WinOS2, and today are still stuck with old 16 bit Windows applications like Word 6. This is quite a common situation today in German banks. So anyone who switches to Linux now "because I can use Wine and keep my Windows applications" is calling for trouble.

When altavista started, they only had DEC banners, no other ads. Once many people are using Google, they will start doing the same crap altavista is starting now - Bet on it! In the meantime, of course, Google is a Good Thing.

Linux was the first operating system to include Java capability Ha ha. Take a few buzzwords, shake well, and there's another fine article. You don't even need to know what you're writing about.

Oh how I hate these LaTeX2HTML generated pages. You read three paragraphs, then have to wait for the next page to load, foonotes are on separate pages again. This may be useful for 100 pages documents, but this little thing could have easily been put into a single HTML file. So many authors seem to think LaTeX2HTML is so scientific and makes their documents look more important.
...or what is this supposed to be?
With WebWasher, a similar filtering tool (but available only for Windows), I can read the article just fine. Anyone knows what's the difference there?

Yes, this time it's Microsoft who pay, but I think software patents are even worse than Microsoft.
Finding out how to cheat may be a bit more difficult without the source, but you can't be serious thinking you are "proofed" against it that way.
Does anyone have a copy of the page that had to be removed? The best thing to do would be to mirror that information everywhere.
Only "3L33T" people use JavaScript anyway...
That link doesn't work. This one does.
If Vmware seems expensive to you, what's the source you suggest for obtaining Word97?
If that had been a usenet article, I would have been quick to say it's a troll.

Well, I disabled JavaScript, that simple.

Just take a look at their Linux history page and the "translations" in it. Just how stupid do they expect their readers to be?
There's an Apple logo on the left side of that page. Any conclusions to be drawn from this?

Some web site is run on Linux and Apache. I imagine a time to come when this is no big news (or shouldn't it be today?)
Looks like the author isn't sure himself :-)
