The hint to seeing this in NYC is to not necessarily have the lights on. When you look up, make sure there are no lights in your vision, including peripheral.
This sorta stems from piracy of idea as well as art. People are making sure what makes them special, that little thing that they know how to do best cannot be copied 1:1. Simply copyright law cannot protect it as well as a patent can. If someone from CDNow makes his own company, he could use the knowledge. With the patent, it is easier to protect him from doing so.
Good server setup if you wanna put all services on one machine and get 1million hits a day serving static and dynamic content.
One should learn to use vmstat, iostat, etc.. to figure out how things are limited. If its bandwidth, splitting off the service to another machine is advisable. If it is still a problem, some sort of load balancing would be nice.
But I cannot stress enough hosting your mail on mail.service.com, web on www.service.com. Even if they reside on the same machine, it makes the transition unbelievably smooth.
And remember to beta test what you are doing. Its unprofessional to work on the live servers too.
Co-lo's have less responsibility for facilities, line maintenance, etc...
Backups
Daily if not half daily. Do full backups at least once a week and incrementals in-between. If you could do full's everyday, all the better. If you can also do redundancy, that would kick butt too, but redundancy (what?) redundancy (what?) is no replacement for backups. Take backups offsite. A must.
As for services, have a different host-name for each service... so if you wanna move your database off of your web machine, www.myhost.com still hosts the web and db.myhost.com still hosts databases.
Make sure to use the latest (or at least clostest) to the newest stable unix you can. Make sure you keep your software up to date security wise and feature wise when it is intelligeble. (If we are on HTTP 1.2, you should probably upgrade to keep up on standards.)
Other tips, make sure you have a policy for the machine. Even if its for 3 people working on the machine, if rules aren't established early on, chaos may ensue when conflicts arise or the company grows. Most important, be openminded to learning. But you seem to have that.;>
Imagine if you were in his place. Millions of people hating you. Think you would act rationally at first? Maybe, but this has been going on for a while. You have to admit that so much directed hate can get to you, regardless of your innocence.
From what I've seen, everyone is taking the popular route: He's guilty and evil. What if what he said (about his sister) was true? I would probably take the same course of action. And in the world of anonymity and FUD, how do you of those who just blindly hate ask such assinine questions? How about asking him questiosn that were relevant? How about what he went through in this whole fiasco? How about in why does he think eh was on the mtv special (I thought he was on it, frankly I don't remember.. it was just weird). I can see why he's pissed also.
Next time, act with some maturity people instead of wasting people's time.
P.S. For those of you who did ask the intelligent questions -- commendations. Even though some of the chosen questions were very BADLY worded.
It has a point when you wanna send something useful, like a calculator instead of sending the equation, when sending an equation would be annoying to recalculate constantly.
I always understood 'secure' as a verb meaning to make extreemly difficult to break into, not as impossible. If you figure out the ligit access method, it's easy to get in. The entire point is making that (and bugs leading to it) difficult to the point where it is near impossible. At least impossible in our time.
It isn't weather HTML email is usable. Obviously it is for some, hyper links, italics and some if not a lot of formating. I would use it instead of MS Word docs, but then again, I don't use a word processor often enough.
What MS has failed to realized is by putting a scripting ability into Outlook, and running code that can come from anywhere and affect the system is worse than running code by buffer overflow. It's allowing easy execution of random code. Joe shmoe could have done this, but guess what, he has.
It's worse than the javascript actionlisteners that exist that disallow you from closing windows or clicking other links. If IE didn't allow opening of files, I would say leave it in, but if it can connect to random places and do random things... BAD.. NONONOO.. It should follow java rules that java should follow.. well.. at least try to.
I think I read somewhere that everyone has some measurement of ADD. I have a bit of it I bet. I also tend to forget that I am doing something, which includes food in the oven, lights and the what. Dont' think of embeded devices as always being turned on.
They can be monitored for dangerous or wasteful usage (plugged in irons, turned on stoves, lights...). If the iron hasn't been moved for more than 5 minutes, shut it off. If the stove has been on for more than 2 minutes and the smoke detector is going off, shut off the stove. I say 2 since some foods generate smoke by. I left the water running overnite onetime. Leaving the water running for more than 30 minutes is a good reason to shut it off...
the buttons look small.. if you are like me, you don't look at the remote much when flipping through. Some universal remotes have a switch that change the functionality from one to another (JVC has a cool one -- too bad it works with no audio devices). Something to this effect needs to be done on a wider scale.
One reason that this cannot work is that people by nature will move from one job to another, retire and enter the labor market. The only way to be safe is to buy an excess of licenses and be done with it. Small companies are not as able to do this as much as they are more frugle.
What was convenient for all was the per seat site license. You could buy single user, 5-10 user or 100 use licenses. They weren't as complicated as before. Companies tend not to resize in denominations that would greatly exceed this licensing scheme. Even if they did, buying an extra 100 user license is easier than guestimating how many overpriced licenes to buy. Btw -- did they mention a discount on multiple license purchases?
One day linux mirrors should implement cvsup servers. Good compression, you don't download everything, only changes. Most people would be doing so after an initial version.
Only people who want to download the entire thing will (by deleting the kernel source dir).
Its also great for going back in history for kernels and downloading those too.
Yes, I know most people will think *bsd. But linux can borrow this as well. Heck, they borrowed the entire concept of unix by cloning it. heh
Its not so much that I would like another ovheard version, but something that requires more than strafe and shoot, strafe and shoot.. and getting keys.
I grew up on this game, but I hope they make it like the original wolfenstein (the overhead 2d view). It needs more of a mission. The old 2d version had you start at the top of a building and go up to the top will trying to find a bomb to put inside of a conference room. Once it was set, run. YOu could bribe guards, and if you made noise, it would be heard only a few rooms down (much like today) but you couldn't bribe them no more...
Hackers. You can't even use the word without ticking someone off. Upholders of the status quo hate that the existing state of affairs is being undermined by sociopathic cybervandals. Old-school hackers think of their work as exploratory and prefer to call people who break into servers for mischief crackers.
But it's those mischief makers who get attention. Their hacks make the front pages of world newspapers and cause fear and hysteria. Among these types of hacks, there are gradations of severity. Some hacks pose a threat to national security; some hacks are merely an annoying form of political activism.
At least they admit they get the term wrong and admitted it. Typical of CNet style. And in their typical CNet manner, they are trying to do what simetlnet/cdrom.com and slashdot.org/hackernewsnetwork/geeknews does. Be a better file service and news site. Only problem is they make a mess of things: no direct ftp access (oak.oakland.edu and cdrom.com) nor do they report everything properly.
This is something I got curious about one day since I ran linux, freebsd 3.3, 4.0 all on one machine. Mount the linux partition under/compat/linux and I could run anything and everything. It would be stupid to have/usr/home from linux mounted in/compat, but as a quick and dirty hack, you can run linux and freebsd apps at once..
NOTE! This is insecure by far. One should mount without suid! Things like su just rebooted my system (good reason too).
Isn't it amazing that UserFriendly was a 2-bit idea that turned into a really popular idea of our culture?
More importantly, the net has brought about a time of change, where people can be what they want. If they try to and not do so correctly, it is a little forgiving but rejects the rejects. Slashdot, freshmeat, Userfriendly even webpagesthatsuck.com (we remember the days of that, don't we?) became authorities over time.
But as the community keeps getting those wiz kids (no.. they aren't all kids, but wizards sounds funky), won't it cause the misled to think that the net is an alternative to school and a degree? Or at least create more misled?
Aw screw it. We'll just stare at the sky until dawn.. ;>

Well.. EDT (aren't we at -500 right now?) is 10pm, EST should be at -400, 11pm.

We should see more strength in the PC SMP for linux, *bsd areas. Especially if everything is GPL'ed as I guess it would be...

How do you deploy a company wide mailing about this without infecting your company? Just curious. *grin*

WindowMaker and enlightenmnet don't suffer from this. You can change the z-order with arrow keys.
