So how many slashdotters does it take to screw in..er.. solve a chess puzzle? Let us take this in steps...
1. Does it involve MS? If so, 75% of the people will hate the MS led answer, regardless of how it came about. 2. FreeBSD vs Linux? 10% will get so caught up on what OS Netscape/Lynx/Opera was running on to post the ideas to each other, they will never get anywhere. The MS people are exluded above. Mac users, who uses a mac? (running away) 3..005% to the 5 first posters. 4. 14% will somehow discuss moderation or how checkers and go have similar problems. Thus starting new threads. 5. The rest.995 will have discussions on topic, but their message threads will be spaced apart by the rest of the banter.
In all sense of fairness, we all dont' directly know him except for his theories and what history books tell us. And who is person of the century is not very subjective. Saying who contributed most to physics might be more appropriate. IMHO, I would think Mark Twain, Erickson (psychologist of Social Psych), Piaget, Pavlov and others were more important. But then again, that's my subjective view for man of the century.
1. You can use real player plus to save real files. 2. You can sniff packets and construct a real audio/video file. 3. Doesn't this lead straight back to the problem with dvd encoding, it has to be decoded somewhere?
I guess I made the joke out of ignorance.. but I had more the picture of little tatoo yelling, "look boss! the plane! the plane!"
ever wondered how they never simply never radio'd in when they were near by.... then again.. maybe tatoo never really needed to know exactly when. *shrug*
Nonon.. you miss the point. I am running it so I can run tetrinet... not xfree

Um, FreeBSD doesn't run debian. It runs linux binaries too. But you don't seem to udnerstand, it runs only the binaries. Debian drivers have nothign to do with that. You are thinking of linux. And native support for what? Your soundblaster waveblaster? Go to linus, not debian.
Am I the only one who mounts my debian linux installed partition on/compat/linux, run linux emulation and run anything i want as long as I install it while in that os?
It's messy to have to reboot to install tetrinet under leenux, reboot to fbsd and be able to run a good version of X with truetype support...

Too bad KDE can run on FBSD without the linux distro part..
First, you're trying to make a point sentimentally and not logically. Lets focus on the facts for a moment. There are two (that's 21.75 times less than 43 and a half) libc libraries for Linux, libc5 and libc6. All the Linux distributions are based on libc6 now, so for what it's worth, there's exactly *one* libc for Linux, and that is libc6. If you download a binary linked against libc6, and you have a recent distribution, as well as the other libraries the program is linked against, *it will run*. These are the facts.
Except if you use glibc 2 or 2.1, or libc6.. and there are times when upgrading from libc5 to 6 is a pain.. unless you like having the two versions on hand...
Next. You say that there are many Linux distributions and it creates confusion. You completely omit the fact that there are three distinct distributions of 386/BSD, called NetBSD, OpenBSD, and FreeBSD. (Actually they're a little further splintered than Linux distributions since they are developed independently, on the source-code level.) You choose only to talk about FreeBSD and disregard the others, in which case you can also choose to only talk about e.g. Debian GNU/Linux and disregard the others. Now, everything you said about the FreeBSD packaging system is also applicable to Debian's apt system. Including automatic dependency resolving (be it libc versions or any other libraries and software). You're again trying to make use of sentimental arguments instead of facts. Please make a factual point.
But you forget, they are completely differnet OS's.. with different kernels. don't forget bsd/os in your list. But because of the BSD4.4 compatability, it's easy to make a static binary, which works for those extreeme cases of need. As for apt-get, it's a bit backwards since debian doesn't maintain a central list of current packages that work together. All the packages in/usr/ports work together and stay current.
About his point about the kernel and the rest of the OS, it's all centralized. When the new kernels come out, the rest of the system gets updated too, so one thing doesn't break each other. Such as ipfw... there was a change where the kernel and the ipfw executable were updated at the same time.

.. this is the result of the lack of success of the people realizing the cost of buying oem copies of software they don't want, MS responding by sorta allowing refunds until they pushed it to the computer sellers. Then with this whole monopoly buisness, the time is right and more proof exists.
That's like saying which is worse, apples or pineapples. It depends on how you perceive them. I would hate apples more since I get the skin in my teeth. I perceive what I get out of it because I am me.
What I get out of playing either is dependent on me and what I learn out of it is limited by my person. One can say, FPS's tend to make more violent children because more children gain traits that reflect violence.
I wouldn't say they rewrote the book. They just wrote the firstp age. Too bad the advanced chapters are debian, suse and mandrake. It was kinda funny that all the unicies were complicated at first and got simpler, eh?
Um, I'm assuming they just preinstall and support it for you and you don't pay for the OS. As for the install, it's just to give variety. Settle down there and be happy you have a choice between redhat (a terrible distro imho) and suse (which I can stand more). Besides, not everyone wan'ts a blank slate.
Imagine it. DJ MusicDealer caries around his magic machine with gigs of music, dodging the law. He goes to a party to deal out his music with a serial port board which interfaces with the Diamond Rio devices. They don't wanna pay $50 a cd (it's the future -- inflation). The cops break in, people scatter.
Imediate costs are cheaper. Don't hvae to go through the processes of hiring, don't have to pay medical and the job isn't so difficult that more than one voice can be done by one person.
