depending on an oss solution that they don't control or can't validate that IP has been used in the code without permission has nothing to do with them caring or not caring about the end users or devs. It has to do with not making bad decisions and putting the company in a place where they could be sued.

  2. Using OSS can open you to lawsuits. on Browser Vendors Force W3C To Scrap HTML 5 Codecs · · Score: 1

We all love to assume its cause they are all big businesses out trying to screw the consumer, but its just not that simple. Microsoft, Google, Apple, are all large companies with a lot of money. I deal with this issue everyday at Boeing. As developers we would LOVE to use more open source, however we can't.

Let me give you an easy scenario. We use an OSS lib and fully abide by the license thinking we are safe. What we can't control is who contributes to the project. If a random developer adds code to the project that he doesn't own that is a huge problem. There is no one checking to make sure that contributors are not violating others intellectual property. What happens next is the original author finds out, and sees $$$. They don't go after the developers that copied code, they go after the large company and sue. There are always exceptions to the rule, but companies are not going to put themselves (and shareholders investments) at risk just because we all think that it will be convenient to have the video tag in html5.

I don't know what most of you are talking about. I think the main problem is user error not machine error. Alot of people on this site think they are experts when they don't know as much as they think they do.

I have a Sony Vaio PCG-FXA49 and I dual boot xp and mandrake 9.1. It works flawlessly. I had absolutely no problems installing linux. Mandrake found and supported all my hardware. Everything works.

So it sounds like a personal problem to me.

I am also tired of the "buy a ibook its so neato" "its go unix underneath" "yea". It gets old. I think the ibooks are pieces of shit. They may look ok, but feel like crappy plastic.

so start the "no there not", "you just can't understand how great apple is". but no thank you, i don't know why i would want to switch from one propreitary company to another.

  4. Re:Programmers are Computer Scientists on Are Programmers Engineers? · · Score: 1

At Texas A&M University where I graduated this past December with a CS degree was from the Dwight Look College of engineering. To obtain this degree I had to take eng. calc 1, eng. calc 2, eng. calc 3, Discrete math, diff. eg. and eng statistics. I also had to take engineering ethics with every one else in the college of engineering. So it is not as cut and dry as you stated.

I think that it should come down to the school involved and the course work required. All programs are not created equal. A&M's is directly based on IEEE's specifications. Some schools cs degrees are in the math dept or college of science. Their core requirements may be quite different than a cs degree from a college of engineering.

I do agree with what someone else stated, that the ACM needs to step up and cordinate with the IEEE and other orgs to evaluate university programs and give a stamp of approval if those students can use the term engineer.

During one of the english seasons they had an american team on called NERDS. The have a website that I cannot remember at the moment. They kept a journal and gave a behind the scenes perspective. They said that The show is edited such to make it seem that they are running out of time while having a lot left to do. The website went on to say that for the most part they were pretty much done and that the editing was done that way to create suspence. That is why things seem to just apear towards the end. Don't forget this is 10 hours compressed into 1. There are going to be things that happen that will not be shown. I am going to try and find that website, it was actually pretty intresting reading.

The same thing happend to me. d/l'ed the installer, everything went smooth. I logged in and got the message that a panel is already running do i want to start another. No matter what I choose I can not get any panel to run. It's driving me nuts. Is there Anyone out that that knows how to fix this. I have been digging through config files for a while and still nothing.

So to people thinking about installing this use caution.

FYI: I am running Redhat 6.0

  8. GTE ADSL Service on BellSouth denies ADSL for Linux users · · Score: 1

This is all really odd. I got my ADSL line from GTE back in january. (college station, tx.) They had two or three isp's that they partnered with in my area. The teleco guy came, he set up the wiring, droped off the ADSL Router and left. The ADSL Router just runs into our hub. (or single computer if you wanted). So its pretty much an ethernet network. The point of this is that it is the ISP that handles the actual Internet Connectivity. My ISP (which is very linux friendly) just gave me a static IP and other essential info and I was off running. So technically, BellSouth's saying that linux configuration is "under development" is crap. The OS matters not.
