Once you know the past, it gets a little easier. I actually had to do this for a customer. A SQL select statement was taking about 5 minutes (lots of data), so the initial progress bar would be stuck at 1%. Knowing that it took about 5 minutes from testing, I increased the progress bar's total and incremented at a rate of 10 seconds appropriately via variable X -- which was initially stored as 5 minutes for all clients. Every time each client performs the operation, it computes the new time it took and adjusts variable X accordingly for each specific client. It's actually quite accurate now. However, the equation is trivial and only computes an average. An artificial neural network could perhaps make it even more accurate. But, if you don't know the past, then yes, predicting the future is hard.
There are actually quite a bit of conservative Christians that think the Earth is only 6,000 years old! That could be a "scientific theory" to throw in there. The basic argument is that we have nothing that is older than 6,000 years old and that our "carbon dating" tests don't actually show the true age. Everything was created exactly 6,000 years ago and then either made to look older, or we are just too stupid to realize it.
Technically -- this is/. right? -- the answer is no for the same reason that we can measure the "weight of the internet." There is actual space that this electricity travels through. There is weight, and there is volume.
As far as what the article is really getting it, I've always thought it was dumb that people can own such things. People can own land, water, and air. Back in the day, you could actually just live in the woods if you wanted to. Now, you'd be arrested because it's either owned by the government as a park, owned by a corporation, or owned by a citizen of your country. Even parts of outer space itself are owned. You can't orbit your satellite in the same space as other countries' satellite at the same time as their satellite, else they'll probably send you a declaration of war after you crash their GPS/TV/radio/surveillance/etc. In the future, I'm sure dark matter, black holes, and even whole galaxies will be "owned."

A married couple has to spend several months apart in separate countries. Does cybersex help prevent infidelity? Does porn increase it? Or the complete opposite of both?
A man is alone and out-casted from the people around him. Does cybersex and porn help him cope and decrease suicide or increase it? Does it increase rape through aggressive sexual porn acts or decrease it by providing an outlet of release?
Or a more romanticized view, does cybersex form an emotional bond between 2 people 1000s of miles away that would otherwise not form? Creating a marriage and bond of love for a lifetime? Or do new "techniques" in porn teach a man/woman a valuable skill that allows them to satisfy his/her lover better?
Or does cybersex and porn actually turn people into monsters? In the end, we don't have enough data and research, and even if we did, it could only apply for a small subset culture and people. We can't base our views on sample sizes in the 100s or less. Everyone is different.
As long as it doesn't directly hurt someone, should we ban it simply because we may think it will indirectly hurt someone? Freedoms in certain regards can cause all new revolutions. Even a sexual revolution can completely change outlooks in politics, spirituality, art/music, etc. Having said all of this, it is also a freedom of the country's people to ban it.
It is a very debatable topic and one without a black and white answer IMHO.
Besides that, Hotmail/Live is so shit too. It takes forever to load. I have like a million unread emails and spam that I don't even bother to delete because I know that it'll take until the next Mayan prophecy to complete. I think this is just Microsoft's way of forcing Outlook onto users. I've only had one issue with GMail. I reported the insistence with attachments in Opera, and they fixed it the next week. It's fast, simple, and gets the job done. If they want to scan my emails, they won't be getting a lot of personal information. And if an email contains sensitive data, I'll just encrypt it before sending it.
I know choosing a language is usually subjective, but most Linux fanboys like Python (or even Ruby or PHP). Why not these? IMO, these are better languages and more suited for Apps and scripting. JavaScript's either original intention or main intention from history has been for client-side Web Browser scripting. Most tutorials, questions, and hacks will be for the Web Browser when searching for JavaScript in a search engine. I really don't get why people are pushing JS. Spend a day each coding in Ruby, Python, and then JavaScript for non-web Apps. I bet most people won't pick JS.
It actually took me about 5 min I think, but I wasn't timing it. I don't know why your comment took that long too:P I thought of some better ones later, like "Hang 1010!"
Like dude, that is so totally rad. We should surf the brogramming waves some time. Grab some Java and feel that Ruby sun! We can do that C-walk over to the Perl ravine. Just Go! Remember when we did that Objective-C and got a total Brainfuck! Ah man, and that girl had triple D! But for shame, she had a Lisp. She totally wanted to see my Python. So righteous! I can't wait to Bash this weekend.
I also had a friend in the past prevent/ban all Chinese IPs. If it's drastic enough, just chop off the head. Chinese hackers can still hack you by spoofing their IP or by tunneling with a proxy server, but this will at least lower the amount of non-Government attacks (due to the Great Firewall and advanced genetic algorithms preventing more holes in the Great Firewall).
Maybe... create a DMZ with the DMZ being tons of Chinese propaganda, using a Chinese-based Linux OS as the server, and have the default language/locale be Chinese. Then create a fake semi-difficult/easy server behind the DMZ set up similarly. Finally, your true server is behind all of this. That way when they login they think they're accidentally attacking a Chinese comrade server or it has already been hacked!
According to google, it costs around $1500. The RYNO costs around $4500. I'd love to get the RYNO, but the last 250 CC motorcycle I bought was $4000, so I think $4500 is a bit steep and probably not going to interest me unless it goes down to $2000. I also think that the Solowheel should drop to about $1000. I would love to own either product, but the price is too high for what you get.
I remember back in the "AOL days" when you could actually cyber quite easily just by typing the girl an arousing tale and showing her your magic wand, and if someone did take pics/videos, no one ever shared them. Then guys like this came along and ruined the whole thing. Now I have to actually communicate with women in person and fear getting an STD and/or fertilizing her eggs. It takes more effort and less single women (AOL was like fishing with dynamite in a barrel made out of fish filled to the brim with fish), but I find that summoning an arousing tale as a whisper in her ears and pulling my pants off still works *most* of the time. "Naked Man" works 2 out of 3 times guaranteed. There's no reason to resort to what this guy did.
The general thought process being : in normal video games (specifically MMOs like WoW) people without jobs are at a distinct advantage because they can spend all day killing boars, leveling up, mining ore, etc. EVE balances that by letting employed individuals use the fruits of their daily activities in game. You spent all day farming in-game, I spent all day farming in the real world.
What about the kid that has parents pay AND sits around playing all day? This is why I'm okay with coding and using bots (although I genuinely avoid other bots in case of viruses).
NX has already been mentioned, but giving more details. Personally, I do think that Linux needs a good, fully GNU, non-MS-tied graphical RDP client/server (especially for businesses trying to go completely Linux). However, I think NoMachine/NX is probably what you're looking for based on the question. Also, as already mentioned, you can use VNC or X11 forward calls to your machine or even use xrdp on server with rdesktop client -- but NX will be faster than all of these from my rough testing in the past. I personally just always use SSH as I've never found a need for a graphical client, but I know a lot of people that do want/need this.
Server:
In your package manager, just search for "freenx" and install.
sudo nxsetup --install
sudo service freenx-server start
sudo chkconfig freenx-server on
It uses SSH as the backend which should already be up and running.
You may need to open up the port (22) in your firewall.
Client:Install from website and run/usr/NX/bin/nxclient.
For added security, I suggest changing the port:
sudo vi/etc/ssh/sshd_config # Change PORT line
sudo semanage port -a -t ssh_port_t -p tcp <port> # For SELinux
Edit firewall appropriately.
sudo service sshd restart
sudo vi/etc/nxserver/node.conf # Change SSHD_PORT
sudo service freenx-server restart
IANAL, but AFAIK... They can't copyright/own work that you produce -- if it's original and just using their device as an instrument. The same goes for generated work as well. If you could, I would make a musical instrument and stick that TOS on there. Then become a millionaire from ignorant artists.
How will you make the swap between money and code? You'll have to make 100% sure that the buyer is not an undercover FBI agent. If he's not, then you'll have to make 100% sure that you can trust the middleman so that you don't get gutted like a pig (buyer pays middleman half of what he would pay you for this). If the buyer and middleman check out, then you'll have to have a mechanism/person to verify the money. If all of that checks out, you'll never be able to put that money in the bank. You'll have to keep it under your mattress or move to another country.
So if you already have money (to buy the "verifiers" and bodyguards) and "good" connections and you no longer wish to see your friends/family (and don't mind looking over your shoulder for "black helicopters" for the rest of your life), then you're fine. Wait a second... Code Monkies are generally loners/outcasts... have a decent paying job... and are always paranoid anyway...
