    Also interesting -- I just tracerouted from myself (Oregon, USA) to Costa Rica. It goes through Seattle, Chicago, New York, and MONTREAL. Montreal? What the heck???

    And I hear Bush is somewhat close to Vicente Fox of Mexico. That's worth something.

    Indeed. I actually learned that several months ago and ran around looking at various things and asking Russian speakers trying to figure it out. Some guy told me about that and that Chernobyl is an exact match for Wormwood. Turns out that that's not QUITE accurate. Chernobyl is named for the rock of the area, but indeed, a word resembling Chernobyl in Russian can be translated to Wormwood in English. Not a direct hit, but definitely close enough to make one go Hmmm....

    Reasonable points, but

    1. A conceived zygote/embryo isn't a potential human being. It has already been created.

    2. More importantly, brainwaves are measurable about 6 weeks after conception. The baby can react to stimuli at 3-6 weeks I believe (been a while since I studied it). That might give some leeway for EXTREMELY early abortions, but you wait at all and you're killing someone with feelings.

    I think we all know that the "terrorists" in the pro-life camp are NOT the norm. None of their activities have been endorsed by any serious pro life group.

    Heh. That's exactly why I'm so desperate for Gore to lose. Suffering through four years of his blatent dishonesty and do-nothingness and divisiveness is one thing. Making the court ultra liberal for the next two decades is 50 times worse.

    That's an interesting idea, and one I had never considered before. I'm an economic conservative, and would love to see income and cap gains taxes drastically reduced. But you know -- even as one who has done some stock market speculation myself -- I actually think this makes some sense.

    Investing in stocks long term and taking risks in that definitely does benefit the economy and should be encouraged. But short term speculation is a zero sum game.

    People that do nothing but day trade and succeed at it really do nothing for society. Why should that act be encouraged?

    Maybe a 50% tax on all gains from stocks held less then, say, 10 business days, without the ability to deduct losses on said stocks, would really help the market stabilize and encourage more useful contributions to society.

    It's very possible that the LA->jAX doesn't run every day. I know the Empire Builder (Chicago->Portland) only runs 4 times a week. The website is pretty dumb about that, so that's probably what happened.

    OK, I'll bite. If Wiccans believe that their religion is true, why would they not try to convert others? I mean, there really only can be one "true" religion. Various religions might have various degrees of truth, but a maximum of one can be completely true. If they believe they're it, shouldn't the try to convert others? If not, why do they bother believing it themselves?

    I'd be seriously tempted by Harry Browne. As it is, I'm fairly happy to support Bush -- my only goal for this year is to sent the algore back to Tennesee, and Bush is the only way I can do that. Plus he's a pretty cool guy for the most part.

    I have some disagreements with Browne, abortion and drugs being among them, but his views on cutting taxes and government are a whole lot more on target than what the Republicans are proposing.

    Heh. The USA has a much suckier public transportation system then even most 3rd world countries. As someone who can't drive, I've seriously considered moving to Central America, partly for that very reason. I can get anywhere cheaply on a bus down there.

    Here in the USA you have $30 Greyhound fares just to go a few miles down the road. What the heck? And their schedules suck too. Only one or two per day on most routes.

    Huh? Amtrak has a train from Los Angeles to (I think) Jacksonville, FL via the southern states. I wonder why they didn't give you that schedule.

    but I agree that Amtrak often costs more than flying. And if you can't sleep on trains well, you'll have a sucky 3 days. I did it 3 times. Didn't learn the first two. Now my Amtrak trips are limited to 5 hours or so... more than that and I fly!

    I installed on RH7 this morning (using their standard silly install program) and it worked fine until it crashed once after about 4 hours of use. It's not quite there yet, but I think I'll switch from NS4.7 for most things.

    I've been saying (seriously) they should do that here on Slashdot for months. Got ridiculed in the process. Glad to see them listening. This really does make sense, for everyone.

    Once again, KDE has a chance. I was starting to think about dumping it for Gnome - that will no longer be necessary. (Although I like what I see of Gnome, so I'll use it too!)

    I just picked up some somewhat juicy information this week. Did you guys know that M$ uses Perl in their source code management system for W2K?

    I got a call from an M$ recruiter this week for a Perl position there. The fact that my resume said "UNIX/Linux developer" and that I said on the phone I really wanted to work with Linux didn't seem to deter him. He went on and on about how great it would be to work for M$, and talked like Gates and Ballmer themselves, saying things like "Windows 2000 and other great products."

    Then I get that juicy nugget. Those guys are too smart to use their own products on things that REALLY matter. :-)

    I agree, and I've thought about that some. But I think the only way you could guarantee a spam free USENET is either strict moderation of everything, or a registration system where you would not be allowed to post until you registered, giving address, phone, etc., and having it verified. It would have to be controlled by an independent orgaization that would have a contract with ISPs -- they would not get posting access until they guaranteed that all their users registered with it.

    I dunno -- it would be a mess, but would sure solve some problems. Of course, kiss privacy and anonymity goodbye...

    Still doesn't make sense. The CC fee is like 2-5% FLAT OUT -- not APR. They get that much per transaction. The overnight lending rate would be like 12% APR, right?

    So they'd only get a tiny fraction of a percent in interest per day, but still have to pay out 3-5%.
