  1. Tested This On Myself.... on Study Finds Link Between Artificial Sweeteners and Glucose Intolerance · · Score: 1

I was told several years ago that I had Type II Diabetes and never believed it. I was put on medications, Glimepiride (Maximum Dosage Daily) and Januvia. My A1C was 5.0 one month, then went to 7.5 which is when they diagnosed me with Diabetes. I took those medications for years and my A1C stayed at 5.5 every 3 months. I gained weight like crazy that I still can not shed.

I decided to test my own theory that I was not diabetic by eating nothing but sugar loaded junk. Candy, Cake, Ice Cream, all the drinks were regular and not diet or sugar free, I ate junk food galore day in and day out. At my next visit which was 6 months and my A1C was still 5.5 I told the nurse practitioner and she of course yelled at me but she couldn't deny the results so she stopped the Glimepiride and continued the Januvia.

I continued the very same course of eating nothing but junk and sugar loaded sugar coated food and drinks. My next visit 6 months later my A1C was still only 5.5 I was then taken off the Januvia.

Once again I ate nothing but junk and sugar loaded foods and drinks as well as candy, cookies, chips, you name it and I ate it. Understand prior to being diagnosed with diabetes I never ate much junk at all. I was a picky eater and ate a lot of baked potatoes plain, baked hamburger with grilled onions and green peppers, and a veggie. Never was a snack eater and never ate between meals. I was always small. Eating the very same way on the medications I gained weight.

My next visit six months later my A1C was yet again 5.5 so I had been given medication, I did not need, for years that made me ill, gain weight and had a lot of side effects all based on one A1C of 7.5. While on the medications my A1C was always at least 6.0 or higher and I was eating like I was told to eat. When I decided to take matters into my own hands and eat what I wanted my A1C dropped even after dropping the medications I continued to eat the same way and my A1C stayed constant at 5.5 and one or two times it was 5.3

Personally based on my own test I have to believe that the medications along with the diet diabetics are told to eat causes the A1C to go up.

Now my little experiment has left me with extra weight that is difficult to get off but at least I am not putting medications I do not need into my body nor do I count carbs or do sugar free anything.

Is my experiment a fluke? Possibly, however as I sit here eating a bowl of Doritos I am very happy I do not have to take any medications that was making me ill from the side effects that are not reversible.

Yes I do know that an A1C of 5.5 or anything over 5.0 is considered pre diabetic. Given I am 52 years old and my sugar levels have been all over the place since I was a kid, mainly on the low end and considered a borderline diabetic I was able to control it with eating habits. Doctors are far too quick to hand out medications that do more harm than good especially if the medications are not necessary.

  3. Re:Protecting the arts and artists on Birthday Song's Copyright Leads To a Lawsuit For the Ages · · Score: 1

I am in the music industry and I have a son that was signed to the dreadful Warner label which is the "owner" of "Happy Birthday" until the year 2050. I have fought my own war with the stupidity of that song in particular being copyrighted. Youtube was forced, by law, some years ago to mute any video including a kids home video where "Happy Birthday" was sung by family members, how absurd! Finally Youtube said if you want to patrol the site for Happy Birthday then hire someone we are not muting it anymore unless the leg work is done and you file a petition against the offenders.

Warner filed a petition against me for promoting my own son's music, which I had been doing years before they were signed. Warner wasn't promoting them so hey I did what any mom would do... I promoted and used my mom bragging rights to "SPREAD THE WORD" Hell I had been doing it since he and my other son were kids in many different bands before he reached that point. I fought back and won, no money, just my reputation which is as good as money in the industry.

I think its hilarious that Steel Panther does a ditty using SOME of the lyrics from Happy Birthday, even allows people to send in names to personalize it for those that want it as a gimmick for the movie "Rock Of Ages".

Personally I have my own version of Happy Birthday with a different melody line... Happy fucking getting older today, Warner Owns your birthday, which is probably OK, because I can't sing well anyway....

Of course I am totally against stealing music or anything for that matter, it is after all the livelihood of many to write, perform and all other forms of entertainment. If we can't make a living then we get what we have now, a lot of shitty music with people that HAVE to use auto tune just to pass or impersonate as a musician on a recording forget any live performances.

All the labels were fit to be tied about Youtube and illegal downloading sites not for the morality of it but because they couldn't monopolize it and make a profit. After many years of the answer staring them in the face they finally decided if you can't beat them join them and make them pay for it. They now do profit off of songs on youtube and the artists profit as well IF they fill out miles of paperwork to get their very small share of royalties. The legalities that revolve around that is a joke in and of itself. I have stated many times over through the years that those in power in the music industry are far worse than all the lawyers and politicians put together.... probably because a good share of them are lawyers and politicians.

The Happy Birthday song should be Public Domain without question it is just that plain and simple however just like everything else in this world it "HAS" to be "OWNED" and the ownership is driven by "GREED".

  4. I am so sick of all the whining in the work place on SendGrid Fires Employee After Firestorm Over Inappropriate Jokes · · Score: 1

I am an old school female geek, meaning I have hit the half century mark in life. This is one subject that has rubbed me the wrong way (oops that could be taken out of context)... for many years now.

If we go back a few years back to the days when there were only 3 channels on TV and censorship, well censorship in general was strict, while these type of things happened they didn't become issues especially in the public eye, censorship wouldn't have allowed it. I was a tomboy so most of my friends were male and a lot more fun than playing with dolls. I was also a geek however I had to keep that part a secret for that was a pass to beat up after school everyday.

I will now jump to when I was 13 at which time I began my professional drummer/percussionist position (oops that could be taken incorrectly too, shame on me). Well that most definitely was not the place for a girl, in the eyes of most males and some females, however it sold lots of tickets. I was having fun doing what I enjoyed and ticket buyers got what they paid for... a great band, awesome music, and to see a girl play better than most male drummers. More than once I was pulled off stage backwards, while I was playing, by some idiot who in his words said "Let me show you what girls are supposed to do" and he didn't have music on his mind. It happened twice, separate occasions, that a guy on got passed security and given I was tiny pulling me off stage fast was easy to do. I never made a big deal of it, in fact I simply got back on stage and said that concludes the dumbass portion of our show... and I didn't give it a second thought.

I have held various jobs throughout my life most of which were considered a "man's" job, actually they were geek jobs which were considered male jobs, with the exception of the very short term job I had working on an assembly line counting chicken nuggets into a bag. I hated that job more than anything and decided that my REAL job was finding a different job. The females on the line were far more raunchy than any male I ever worked with however that was OK and allowed, talk about double standards. I actually was laughed at because I didn't get some of the jokes, implications, snide remarks and so on. I lasted a month at that job after which I took a job as a draftsmen back when you had to actually draw on the board not CAD. Meaning you had to know what you were doing.

As time went on and CAD was beginning to take over board drawing I was one of the last to convert because I didn't want anyone to think I was a secretary, not that there is anything wrong with being a secretary, I just worked too hard to get where I was and my drawings were my legacy as nobody's drawings looked the same. Ironically Auto-Cad was what took me deep into the geek world as I no longer liked being a senior designer, I had advanced from draftsmen by this time, I wanted to pick apart what made Auto-Cad work. Again this was not a field for females and I took a lot of flack for it but it went in one ear and out the other.

Computers became my life with Linux being an obsession. It was made very clear I was not wanted in this field but that didn't matter to me all that mattered to me is it was where I wanted to be. All my life I have dealt with sex or sexual innuendo's and there were two ways to handle it, blow it off (oops dang I sure do say a lot of things that could be taken out of context), or be a cry baby about it. I chose the former because I liked my jobs, I do not get offended and if guys want to "fork" you with their "dongle" then hey that was a compliment.

The most memorable job where this type of thing would be an issue for most females these days, I was a Networking Systems Engineer so I was very upper management. All upper management had to take a sexual harassment class once a year. It was laughable at best but hey the food and drinks made it go by fast. I reported directly to the president of the company and he was completely computer stupid. To make a long story short he heard about

  5. Digital Rendezvous Is Cheating. on The Internet Has Transformed Modern Divorce · · Score: 1

I have been online since long before Facebook or the phrase "Social Networking" existed, back in the dinosaur age of just plain IRC. A true geek yes indeed and I have seen it all. Divorce began to change in the 90's when "regular people" non geeks began to flood the net. It was quite common for a new couple to join an IRC channel all excited about their new computer and first time users. They would go on and on about how cool this is and take turns typing sitting next to each other enjoying the new world of "The World Wide Web". One could almost visualize them giggling and goofing off making fun of those that had been around for awhile, tainted and how different this new experience was. They may even say they will never be hooked online that a little time each week was more than enough.

At that point I would tell them disconnect your computer and save your life. Why? Because in a few short months those same happily married people would be online separately at all hours of the day and night and all of a sudden they were married to the most horrible beast on earth. Their nic would be in channel not idle yet no text on screen so where were they? In a private chat with some "hottie" or they thought, throwing away their marriage, all they worked for and headed for a downhill fall that would take years if ever to recover from.

Beginning in the 90's it was deemed that those little late night chats were considered cheating or an affair in a divorce court of law. At that time most people only "thought" they had deleted their indiscretions but geeks like myself were able to retrieve all the digital foreplay to be brought out in the court room. The difference now is more people are savvy and can hide their digital rendezvous by using various software/hardware that does a much better job at erasing the evidence.

The internet has not transformed divorce it has transformed people and made just about anything and everything one could want virtually happen with instant gratification. The problem is most of it is only fantasy, it is a virtual life with very little actual time spent in the real world. Some times too much information is not a good thing. How many people hold on conversations without texting or email? The number one reason people like to "chat" digitally is because when they are bored they stop responding without any second thought as to the person they were communicating with. Oh a phone call is coming in, Caller ID reveals its someone you do not want to talk to so you hit the "FU" button and if you have a second to press a pre programmed text, "busy will get back to you soon" which most never do.

I ask myself how many generations will it take before the "basic primal urges" no longer exist in humans? That is what keeps men and women or any combination of who is hot for who in a sexual mode and nothing is sacred anymore. I think divorce will become a thing of the past somewhere down the line because there will be no reason to get married. Populating the planet hasn't required an actual physical act of sex in a long time. So when I read the headline of this article I had to chuckle and think to myself we are in a far much grave situation than the transformation of divorce.

Go into a crowded public place and take a look around you will view a sea of people smartphones in hand passing each other like nobody else is in the same general area as they carry on their digital communication with all too many times their "hottie". In reality if they took a minute to look around themselves they may find there are a lot of REAL "hotties" right next to them and the "hottie" they are sneaking around with is really nothing but what they have built up in their mind living in their virtual world of lies.
