I'm not denying that. I'm just wondering if you don't feel a little strange having to use technological (and possibly illegal) measures to decide for yourself what you can view on >the 'Net
Without a doubt - yes. Well at least if I don't like it here, I can move.
Such a degree of control over access to information may seem excessive to some of us in the West who are unfamiliar with your culture and customs.
The forum is no way a good place to describe what this place(Singapore) is like. I guess you'll have to live here for a while to understand what its really like. If you like a conformist, stable and relatively riot-free place to live in, I guess this is it. YMMV.

The problem is: Can we trust the mass who are unaccustomed to that form of freedom to behave properly should that freedom be allowed? Can they adjust or just abuse the hell out of it?
IMHO, proxy filtering is there just to pacify parents who are worried about kids surfing pr0n. Or whatever.
I know, I have a few from pre '88 , they are big clunky keyboards and my boss swears by them! Me? I swapped mine for a NMB keyboard. I need to code, not injure my fingers.
From what I've heard from a computer marketing guy in Taiwan, it'll take probably a year before they can completely recover to what their pre-quake production level. Hopefully the new quakes aren't going to do even more damage.
I had email from Taiwan that said "... got to stop. Power is about to be cut again..."
Apparently the power supply there is erratic too.
back to watching my Kaffe compile in the silly dos window.

Yup , saw that article in Javalobby too, did that. I am just feeling rather nervous about it since I'm designing a server for my client.
It is done in Java at the moment, but being wary of that issue and the lack of select() in Java, I was considering on reworking it in C/C++.
I'll just remember to ask him not to run the server in Win98....:)
We are using Java for rewritting a server from C++ to Java. Why ? Because it's easier to run it in other platforms now (like Linux, and a PC), it's more flexible and has even better performance than the C++ version due to some design changes that are easier to implement and maintain in Java. [snip]
Just curious, how scalable is a server written in Java anyway? I've heard that the thread per connection model doesn't really work too well.
It just might be a fact. My boss brushed off a Sun sales call telling him we use Linux here. So I guess from my POV, Linux was a threat to Sun...
BTW is there chance that a rogue programmer injects some code say... from StarOffice into a GPL Office suit? Is there any protection from this kind of stuff?
Just compiled the 2.2.10 kernel on a slow 486 last friday. I'm very tempted to pretent that the new kernel is not there at all..... *sigh* Well, time to read up the new features/bug-fixes before I decide whether to download it or not... might not need it this time.

Duh. I just wanted to read the article.
Forget it. I just got around the problem.
Is there any other way that I can read the article? Singapore blocks www.playboy.com

I would wonder how AMD would name it's next gen chip. K9?(I know it's off-topic but....)

Very much agreed! Searching through their site can be really strenuous.
