Perhaps in a true free market environment this would fly as you could find someone who did not rip you off that way, but in an environment where there is no other option, this is an abuse. As someone who lives in the state holding up the Keystone, I will tell you we don't want it here unless you can route it around environmentally sensitive areas like the sand hills and the Ogallala aquifer. That and the fact that we gave eminent domain rights to a foreign company, how perverse is that. A foreign company gets to take away your land. You'd think that those on the right would hate it. They don't its worth too much money for them.
The US hit peak oil in the 70s. It wont be long (if it hasn't happened yet) that the world hits peak oil. It may have been extended from previous predictions, but that was only due to advances in getting it out of the ground. Those tech advances are slowing down, shortages will happen, and they will happen before we are even close to switching to an alternative.

You could have replaced the ignition cylinder and then pretty much stopped there. You would have to have two keys then, one for the door and one for the ignition. Sure its an extra key but I bet you already have a number of them on your key ring. Programing the key can probably be done yourself. In fact the ignition cylinder usually isn't that hard to replace yourself either.

Cost of entire fix is 30 dollars, and maybe two hours of your time. The longest part is the programing which looks to take about 45 minutes.
Now how much do you think it will cost to troubleshoot and fix push button system? At least three hours labor is my guess, and probably 200 in parts. So close to 500 bucks at a minimum? Give me the cylinder lock I can replace in the parts store parking lot for the win.
