Maybe Texas can make a deal with New York and trade it for the Enterprise. Houston should have gotten one of the Shuttles. They where the third most deserving location after the Smithsonian and KSC. Even if the only reason that Mission Control and astronaut training is there is because the SOB LBJ stole it from the Cape.
But most modern airliners are actually slower than say the 707 of the 1960s it cursed at 1000kmh while the 747 cruises at 918 kmh. But is not just air travel but on the whole the reaching is getting less and less. You have articles saying that we can not send men to Mars because of the distances and radiation. In the 60s you would have articles talking about how we can go to Mars and ideas on how to solve the problems. We are in an age of pessimism and despair. How many people think the tomorrow will be better than today? The thing is that today really is better than yesterday in many ways but If fear that the future will be what we expect it to be not because we have no choice but because we are making that choice.
The Concorde was not uncomfortable at all. It was first class and you only had to spend a few hours in that nice leather seat to get to Europe. Supersonic travel was just more difficult than people really understood because starting in the 1950s the difference between the cruise speed of military aircraft and their top speeds started to rapidly increase. In 1950 an F-86 would cruise at around 500 mph and could reach around 650 mph. By 1960 the F-4 would cruise around 585 mph but had a top speed of 1472 mph. But it could only fly at that speed for a few minutes before it was low on fuel. As you can see this gave an illusion of speed that was just not all that usable for transportation. If you need a burst of speed to avoid a missile or to clear a target area fast it worked. The first real supersonic aircraft that could actually fly long distances where the XB-70, A-12/SR-71/YF-12a , Concorde, and TU-144. If you want you can throw in the F-106 which could was supposed to have super cruise capability and the British Lightning which could super cruise but frankly was a flying fuel emergency even without going supersonic. It just proved very difficult to make the leap from top speed to cruise and it cost a lot. I have to wonder if this lack of interest in speed is a bad sign for society as a whole. Instead of being interested in pushing we are getting more and more interested in cost and comfort. Sounds like a society getting ready to go to the old folks home. We are trading our in our Porsche 911 for a Lexus with heated seats and seats that rub your back for you.
But they are not using blades they are using 1Us. At least that is what it looks like. I find it odd that they are putting the HDs in the oil and in the server. To be as green as possible I would think that having the server boot from the network and having a SAN would be a better choice. And it would beat the daylights out of having to pull an HD out of an oil soaked server. How about you used heat tubes from the copper block on the chip connect to an easy to fill water block/ heat exchanger for a blade system.
Cell phones are cheaper than land lines for most people and you do need a phone to get a job. The internet is also very useful for finding work, getting government services, and even education.
While I am amazed at people that think that Cable TV is a necessity I do not think that a phone of some kind is a luxury. And frankly in this day and age some kind of internet access is vital. The nearest public library to my home is well over ten miles away and their hours are extremely limited so for a person that is working it just isn't an option for internet access.
But what you still don't get is that this price is just outrageous it doesn't matter who is the target audience is the price it's self is the problem. It is really you that is just making this a social issue and saying how people should spend there money!
And charging anybody that much for data is a rip off. Yes I had some friends visiting from the UK and they wanted to buy a prepaid sim to put into their phone. Since AT&T is uses the bands as their carriers for 3G that is the carrier they wanted to use. The problem was that price was at this super high level. And as for the rest of your rant about do I know how mobile works the answer is yes within some limits I do. I can also read which does help. If you JUST want pay as you go data for ipad you can get it for $10 per GB. It is a RIP off. And yes it can be someone that is as you put it poor but it can also be someone just starting out. A divorced woman with little credit in her name. Or just someone that doesn't want a contract. It doesn't matter that if you think people need this or not. It is extremely expensive and since AT&T is regulated and is now trying to buy another major carrier which does require governmental approval such extreme pricing schemes should be looked at.
Why not just use water cooling. Water is a lot more efficient at removing heat than oil. Just install water blocks in place of the heat sinks. You wouldn't need to worry about sealing the contacts and pins which you would with oil. and if done correctly maintenance would be too bad. I believe that Cray used immersion cooling on their Cray-2 line using Fluorinert.
I don't download movies but I do download podcasts and stream radio and use RDIO a lot. If you can live with the limitations then great but the price per is till way too hight. Wouldn't you like to pay $20 for a 2 gig package every year os so instead of $10 per month? I mean if it was avail about to you.
I think you need to thing. I am not complaining about the poor getting soaked for data plans. I am complaining about PEOPLE GETTING SOAKED ON A DATA PLAN! Since you seem to hate the poor so much and think they should get ripped off let me give you some examples of other people that may want a pay as you go data plan. Someone travelling to the US on business. They may want to pick up a couple of pre paid sims and use their phones in the US. Data roaming charges are sick. If you are travelling from europe to the US then odds are that you are not poor. Other people just like not having a contract and do not want to pay for a plan. I was thinking of picking up a nokia smart phone to use on my motorcycle trips with a pay as you go plan. They run for a very long time on a charge and have very good navigation software. I wouldn't want to use it as my everyday phone but it would be nice if I could go pick up a card before a long trip and use it. But some how you have it all twisted up that this is about the poor. No it is about ripping people office with outrageous prices. Oh and if you RTFA you would have seen that the price of data is 100 times what iPad owners pay for pay as you go data! IT IS A RIP OFF! Oh and before you start telling people that they need to get their priorities straight I suggest you get yours in order. Frankly from your posts you are one of the poorest people I have ever seen post slashdot. The saddest poverty has nothing to do with the lack of money.
I think the point is that those people are getting soaked. If you want a smart phone you better not want to go prepaid. Of course there are other carriers that do not abuse their customers at that rate. The problem is that one of them is being bought by AT&T... Hey FCC and FTC did you see this?
Westerns as well with the classic bible catching a bullet. It is just not that new of a trick. What I think is funny is they talk about LOTRs as an example. My goodness people that was in the orignal book!
I did answer that there was not enough. You may be correct but it seems pretty plane to me that if there was enough cosmic rays to use as propulsion that almost nothing including most electronics would last very long out there. I did agree with you that my comment did not match my intention but then if you are on the internet you do have access to that knowledge. As to your organelle question I would ask you which type of cell? And no that was not Elementary school that was Jr. High. And yes I will try to not be so critical in the future. You are correct that it was a bit harsh of me. My wife keeps trying to remind me that not everyone has the same memory as I do.
The US space program wasn't in bad shape at all by then. Sputnik had kicked it into gear back in 1957. You have to look at the military side to understand. By 1961 the US was actually far ahead im ICBMs, SLBM and Bombers. The R-7 was a massive impractical ICBM that took a week to prep for a launch but it was the only thing the USSR had that had a chance of threatening the US with. In 1957 the US was working on making practical ICBMs and smaller warheads. It had no military need for anything like the R-7. By 1964 the US had jumped into the lead with Gemini and by 1969 the US landed on the moon.
Oh and just for historical perspective the US didn't any German help with cameras or film for spysats. We had Dr. Land. The same man that developed the Polaroid helped develop the first cameras for the U2, SR-71, and the first US spy sats. But it was a good movie.
His fight doesn't count by FIA rules. For a flight to be official the pilot must land with his craft. Yes shameless nitpicking that no including myself should give any weight too but someone was going to say it so I might as well get it out of the way.
The only downside is that Gargarin is not with us today. He is exploring beyond the rim.
ISPs will have to get over that. Actually they should even embrace it. Bandwidth really is cheap ISPs should start offering things like DropBox to their customers. If you think about it ISPs have really sort of pushed themselves into being just dumb pipes by not offering any service but email and usenet and even then they are dropping usenet.
I was not insulting the person posting since they might be young. If they are not that young they really did get cheated in their science education. I know when I was in 5th grade we covered what a cosmic ray is. Not only that but I went to school in Florida which has one of the worst rankings in the US. Not to mention that it was back in the 70s when there was no internet. I really was not trying to insult the person as much as the education system that allows an adult with such a limited knowledge of science. But notice that if you didn't like my tone should you moderate it down if the data was correct? You should have just commented on it. Of course moding it down and then commenting on it is actually violating the spirt of the rules of Slashdot moderation. But I can see your point but the comment I made was not targeted at the person as much as the education system that allows such ignorance.
Well since the majority of people on Slashdot do not seem to know what it is I would say that it is a smashing success. I am sure that it is great to have a fast high speed network that connects research centers that is not filled with LOLCats, pron, and Youtube videos is worth it's weight in gold.
No I didn't know that he taught fifth grade and the story didn't mention it. So yes he does have some validity. Thing is you often hear people outside of their field spouting off non-sense. Just listen to any discussion involving Autism sometime. So now I like Woz even more.
Ahh no. And please tell me that you are in elementary school. If not you really got cheated on your science education. Cosmic rays are random high energy particles. If you could some how channel them you could to a microscopic amount of thrust but not enough to worry about. You can use radiation as a source of power using a solar sail or solar cells. Light is after all radiation just just like gamma and x-rays. It is just a different color. A super conducting magnet could really help but it will have to be flight tested. The biggest source of radiation is the sun and it is a real concern even on the the space station.
They have every right to be scared. I heard that Google is going to start producing content. What is so funny is the person talking about said that Google is going to spend 100,000,000 dollars to produce ten hours of weekly content. The talked about how it will be hard to create quality content for so little money! WHAT? Ten million of dollars an hour!. If they use a staff of say 50 people that comes to $200,000 a year per person. That seems like a good job to me. It will be interesting to see what will happen when Apple, Google, Netflix, and Microsoft start to produce content. Frankly there is already some good content on YouTube that my wife and watch on our TV using or Roku box.
Yea I know I really put that poorly. Writing just isn't my strong suit. Thing is I am pro evolution being taught but I am anti science as a religion. Science can have no sacred cows and nothing can not be questioned.
I did read it. It was pretty unclear about the grade level and I still disagree. If fails because it doesn't follow that old principle of "If I see farther then others it is because I stand on the shoulders of giants." Before you can really be innovative you must be educated. That is what all that learning in school really is for. Ideally to build a foundation. Yes Woz's plan might help the top.01% but it may just throw the rest under the bus. BTW what WOZ is suggesting is does exist at the post graduate level.
I had no idea that he has a degree in education or did postgraduate studies in education or even home schooled his own children. Is this just as iffy as a Musical composer telling an engineer how to build a bridge?
Have you tired it? I find almost no flash games work with Flash on Android. It really is very iffy at best.
Maybe Texas can make a deal with New York and trade it for the Enterprise. Houston should have gotten one of the Shuttles. They where the third most deserving location after the Smithsonian and KSC.
