They are doing okay in the netbook category but only because they keep XP around. Had they killed XP Linux would have won that. My opinion is that netbooks will shrink into smartbooks. Linux will catch up and Microsoft doesn't have a good solution on the ARM platform. CE actually has less software than Linux in that case.
True but Microsoft really has made some massive stumbles of late. 1. Vista. Love it or hate it Vista is the new Windows ME. 2. Mobile phone strategy/music player strategy. What a mess that is. 3. The failure to see the rise of the netbook/tablet.
The mobile/music player strategy is the really the heart of the problem and yes they are related. Apple decided to make the music player market theirs. They created the iPod which eventually became the standard in mobile music players. They became cool and people actually really liked to use them. They then used that to create a smartphone. People already used their phones to play music and a lot of them hand crappy browsers and email. Apple combined a phone with music player with a good browser and then added apps. They now are a major force in mobile phones. Microsoft actually got into mobile phones before Apple. They put a version of Windows on a phone! It was clunky and not all that easy to use. They couldn't even execute a better email solution than RIM! While some what popular it never really was super exciting. Microsoft got into the mobile music market late and the Zune was a little clunky but had some potently great features but they where crippled! Heck it had wifi but couldn't surf the WEB! The Zune HD may be the best mobile music and video player on the market but that market is shrinking as people move to smartphones and tablets. Also it lacks the iPhone/Touch large app store. Now we have Windows Phone 7. It doesn't exist yet, it doesn't multi-task which Android, WebOS, and IOS 4 do. It lacks cut and paste. And frankly I have to wonder if anybody will care in a year when it is out. Microsoft seems to have NOTHING that can compete with the iPad. Microsoft is begining to look like IBM in the 90s.
Actually I do tend to agree with you except I have given up on debate. It is very rarely civil or productive. I want it turned away from debate to problem solving.
Oh and just so you understand. I have NO faith in environmental groups, NO faith in big business, NO faith in big governments. Frankly the dealings I have personally had with environmentalists has tend to prove that the majority think they know a lot more then they really do. My experience with politicians is almost identical. My experience with people in big business is that they do tend to know a lot but rarely are their motivations in my best interest.
But then you may be right. My experience for some odd reason seems to be include a lot of wackos. But even then don't I get some credit for trying to work out a good solution with a minimal amount of dogma.
However I would like to point out some other issues with even my solution. Without storage what will you do for night time power use. Solar is not super dependable but in the Sahara it should be pretty good. The thing is what will the net cost in emissions of the using peaking plants at night instead of base load plants? Also I would ask what is the situation with wind in North Africa? Could you colocate wind turbines there as well as the solar to share the grid? Often the wind blows when the sun isn't shining. The problem could then be dawn and dusk which tends to be times of low wind and light.
Also if any of those nations have stranded gas why not also import power from natural gas as well as solar? Natural gas is lower emission, not zero but a lot better than coal. It could provide a little extra economic development in the region as well acting as a supplement to the gas imports from Russia which at times seem risky.
Yea I am a fan of solutions not rules and dogma when it comes to energy.
When I said one way or another was refureing to the two ways that I suggest. Being sent to a senator that could have called for a public investigation or if that had failed to release it unmodified to the public. Those where the two ways it should have been released. "Somehow, I actually doubt that. You are upset this video came out but the only way to criticise its release and not be immediately tagged as a troll that you can puzzle out is to pretend that you appreciate that the video was released but disapprove of the manner in which it was done."
You may think that but it is false. What I think is that you don't care about if it done in an unbiased way. In fact I think you wanted it to be published in the most biased possible way that you happen to agree with. Since you can claim that any of my statements about wikileaks are false you invent a motivation out of our own mind to attack me personally. Of course you have no proof of or statements except that I dare to point out just how biased and manipulative wikileaks really is. Since I dare to criticize the wonderful souls at wikileaks I must has some dark evil motive. Please you have so lost any objectivity that you must defend anybody on your side by making personal attacks. Even to the point of making a claim that you KNOW my motivations without ever meeting me.
You say nobody is unbiased. You are right to an extent. The thing is that one must work very hard to not let their bias control their actions. Wikileaks did just fail at that. They crafted that video to exploit peoples emotions for monetary gain! You have allowed your own bias to cloud any criticism of Wikileaks at all. You see anybody that doesn't think they are God's gift to freedom as evil. Wake up. Good people can have differing view points. What it comes down to is simply this. Did wikileaks add emotionally manipulative content to the video? Did the present it in a way to maximize their fund raising efforts? If you honestly disagree then well I simply feel you are wrong and misguided at best. But if you do agree that happened but are willing to totally ignore it then I would say that you do not care for justice or good free journalism at all. All you care about is supporting your own beliefs.
No I do care. But caring has NOTHING to do with journalistic integrity. You are so blind that will excuse anything because you feel this is more important that being unbiased. The difference is I really have very little issue with wikileaks publishing this. I personally think that it should have been handed over to a senator that would be willing to call for an investigation first and if no investigation was forth coming then release it to the public. To me that would have been the proper way and the way that would most likely bring about justice. However your little righteous indignation is just sicking. I could see you saying that about me if I had said they shouldn't have published it! But my criticize was the way the manipulated people for money using this video. If you are so closed minded that you can see how just ignoring this and all the other times wikileaks has slanted the story just to get more attention. So yea you are an evil mindless drone. You can not see that I am critizing the way the information was presented but I am not justify the actions of the helicopter crew. Right now I will say that unlike you I do not have the all the data needed to judge the actions of the crew. You on the other hand seem all to willing to be judge and jury in this case with just one side of the story. You have the right to feel that way but you do not have the right to say that I don't care about other suffering. The way the video was presented was terrible and shows that Wikileaks is nothing but a web tabloid. Should the video have been released. I would say yes one way or another. Was it released in a responsible unbiased way? Not at all. So to answer your silly statment that you do not even know what I meant when I said you are accepting that the end justifies the means. The end is getting the video. The means in this case was extremely slanted and manipulative for the purpose of getting money! You don't care what the title is or how manipulative it is. So for you the ends justify the means. I am also glad the video is out. I just wish that it had come from someone with more integrity than Wikileaks. Or that Wikileaks had acted with integrity which I have honestly yet to see happen.
I don't think IOS will replace Mac OS/X but I am really shocked that there isn't an Mac App store. Why and app store? Because people would like and use it. Right now if I go to Best Buy or any place else that sells software there may be a small section of Mac software. Also it is expensive to produce retail software. You have to have a pretty box, Press CDs get the stores to carry it... And I will bet you the stores take at least as much as Apple does. Yes you can always put up a website and sell your software online but then you have to run a store, maybe deal with sales tax, and hope people find your software. So it really is a win for commercial developers. For the consumer has some security that the software has been checked and most likely isn't malware. With the iTunes store it is really easy to make the purchase. It is easy to find what you like and to get some idea of the quality by reading the reviews. But the main thing is the ease of getting and installing the software. Just like with apt-get and synaptic people will tend to go with the what is easy. Sure I may download the latest version of some app for Linux and do the install by hand but for the most part I and probably most other people just use what is in the repositories. So yes I can see how an app store for the Mac would be very popular and widely used. As long as they keep allowing me to also install from other sources like a CD and or downloads I see it a win win. What I don't see is IOS replacing OS/X. OS/X is Steve's baby and it really is well loved so nope. App store yes OS/X no.
What disgust me is how people like you feel that end justifies the means. I do not have all the data from that video. It wasn't just the title but they added material that was designed to inflame. Yous sure couldn't enter that video as is as evidence in a court of law and to show it before any kind of trial is unfair to the accused.
They way the video was released and what the video showed are too entire different things. They can both be wrong. The difference is that video is incomplete data. What wikileaks did was to slant the video to get donations. Had they just released it with the title of "Leaked Video from the Apache Attack that Killed to Journalists" and without any additional commentary or inflammatory additions I would have been fine with that.
But Wikileaks doesn't do that. More than once I have found they they tend to slant and mislead to get more publicity. Maybe they think that they are doing a service bringing not just information but the "truth" as they see it but that makes them no better than FOX News or any of the other talking heads out there.
Well for the most part I do not like groups that just pipe up with "They could cheat and that is terrible" it is not productive. I also don't have any real issue with them building and using natural gas plants. Natural gas has a much smaller carbon foot print than coal. Not perfect but better than coal and I am all for improvement where I can find it. Mainly I just find the negative outlook of the environmentalists to be just really counter productive. Instead of saying, "This is great! and this how we can make sure that it works they way we all want it to." They start off well they could just cheat... Over all I have no faith in environmentalist groups at all. They have full time paid employees and they earn money by scaring people into donating. All too often they fly off half cocked over things that are not a danger. They are the classic case of the boy that cries wolf.
It isn't Intel, AMD or Microsoft. It is all of them. Diversity breeds innovation. Compare today to say 1986. In 1986 you had many competing systems. It does but instead of demanding only electricity from solar be sent over the lines why not demand that x amount of solar panels be connected to the grid. There is no difference between electrical made from solar and that made from coal. The only difference is the pollution and that is all that really counts.
Actually you need to learn a little more English. Native American = the aboriginal tribes that inhabited North and South America a group that I am a member of BTW. Native Language = the language that is ones original language or the language that they are most fluent in. Most people in North America speak English or Spanish as their native language. Even most tribes in North America teach their original language only as a second language to maintain cultural continuity. I grew up far from any others of the tribe my family is from and only speak English. I love it when some none Native American likes to try and play some white man's guilt card. Odds are I know a lot more about what it is to be Native American that you sparky.
He is wanted for questioning. He has received classified information and has published some of it. How he published it was shameful and one of the worst examples of Yellow Journalism I have seen in a very long time. It was as unbiased and as even handed as the worst that FOX News has delivered. The title the was created for the video and the additions to the video where pure emotional manipulation all for purpose of fund raising.
This guy isn't going to vanish into a dark hole he would at worst be questioned. Unpleasant but also totally to be expected. What I think is at best amusing is this is considered news. It would be right up with there with water is wet. Yea this guy if he comes to the US will be questioned. If he goes to any nations that are close allies to the US he may be questioned. There is a difference. We make CPUs, airliners, jet engines, cars, roads, houses, drugs, and so one. I do agree that we really need to start making even more stuff but we do make a lot of big ticket high complexity items.
And how many languages do you speak fluently? Honestly that is one of the more annoying things I hear from people. I only speak English and I can understand a little Spanish but many of my friends speak more than one language. What most people in Europe don't understand is that the majority of people in North America speak one of two languages. Spanish and English. You have a smaller group that speak French and a few other very small groups that speak other languages. I know a good number of North Americans that can speak to a good 75% of the population of North America in their native languages. Just how many Europeans can speak to 75% of the population of Europe in their native languages?
And it is those adrenaline junkies that are the problem. The shame is they have the legal right to get in the way and endanger others and are the least likely to have the brains and consideration to get the heck out of the way.
Actually most of Pakistan is pretty well educated and has one of the most liberal outlooks on separation of church in the Islamic world outside of Turkey. It could work but I doubt it.
"Well, count the crusades, every war fought among "Christian" nations (didn't the Civil War kill more "Christian" Americans than all other wars combined, with a good number of those against Christian nations?) and let us know. How about counting the destruction of the Crusades and the witch hunts and everyone killed by the British Empire or all the Native Americans wiped out by the Christian Europeans?" Still doesn't hold a candle to the death count in communist countries. They just where no where as good at full scale killing as modern communists. Stalin killed more people than Hitler.
Actually Germany was a very Lutheran nation. Roman Catholicism was a minority. Actually the Lutheran majority was more pro nazi then the Catholics in Germany. And just take a look at the whole ideas behind Nazism and you will see that they at best tolerated Christianity but they sure didn't embrace it.
Yes resources can make for better data gathering. That is why it is so important for scientists to publish data! So scientist without out a massive grant may make a discovery using the data that is gathered by the ones that do. And let's really face facts. The science isn't done during the chase. That is pure data acquisition. The Science is done back when they look at the data.
I will have to say that I do disagree with you. The vast majority of people do know what radar is and I would even bet they know what air pressure is. Thankfully most people really are not as stupid as Slashdot readers think. BTW the majority of people don't chase Tornado's. Don't confuse the small stupid minority with the majority of people that really don't cause problems.
Yea I love how people worry about taking a karma hit? Why? It sure doesn't effect the money you take home or anything else in the real world. ACs are just that. Too afraid to be responsible for what they post.

Yes the do. Just take a look at the majority of posts on Slashdot.
What is really scary is the quality and politeness on Slashdot seems to be far better than on any "news" site I have ever been on.
Yes but most of those people have not done anything but grab a camera and get in the way.
Yea I love how people worry about taking a karma hit?
Why?
It sure doesn't effect the money you take home or anything else in the real world.
ACs are just that. Too afraid to be responsible for what they post.
