Inovation doesn't have to mean bloat or even added features.
You can simplify current features, increase performance, or even decrease memory footprint.
I think the idea of a one size fits all program is just kind of silly. You have fourth graders using Word to write book reports about Harry Potter.

iTunes is moving to or already has moved to all DRM free music and they still do sell a good amount of it. I did say they might block it in software but I see no chance they will block it in court. They could loose, it will cost money, and really could be some nasty PR for them. It could even push interest in anti-trust.

I vote for the ads. Frankly Verizon is the least geek friendly carrier out there. I don't like AT&T because of their politics involving things like community Fiber and Wifi. Anyone remember what they did in New Orleans? After the hurricane they offered the police the use of one of their buildings until New Orleans started to work on a community WiFi system then kicked them out. Or their statements on net neutrality?

Well the idea that NTFS got it right is funny to start with. Defrag??? I still have to freaking Defrag?
Take a look at the feature set of ZFS and NTFS and tell me that NTFS got it right.
Also Windows does have few more file systems like Fat32 and VFat. You can also install EXT support in XP as well.
The real answer is that one file system doesn't work for everything. You only think that Windows has a single filesystem because that is the the default option. If you install Ubuntu you will get EXT3 I think by default or maybe EXT4. I have not checked lately. You may never even know what file system you are using with some Linux distros. But.. Linux give you options that Windows just doesn't to use different file system that may fit your needs better. If you are just going to use Linux as a desktop then just use the default and don't worry about it.

Funny but has Windows had many Viruses lately. I know that Virus has become a common term for all sorts of programs but this is Slashdot. I thought that a Virus was a program that would self propagate usually using a boot block method. Not many people boot from floppies any more.
You do have some email viruses but the vast majority of those I would call Trojans and depend on somebody to actually run them.
Then of course your have all sorts of exploits that then try to infect other systems but wouldn't those be worms?
    And then you have BonzoBuddy.....

Wrong... Verizon and Sprint are CDMA. All you have to do to put a Sprint phone on the Verizon network is for Verizon to activate it.
What I don't get is why is everyone so hot for it to move to Verizon.
Sprint is several hundred dollars a year cheaper for the same plan. I have had no problems with converage on Sprint and there network is actually pretty fast.
As far as customer support I have not had any issues with them.
I wonder how much of the Sprint hate is left over and how much of it is current. And don't the people on slashdot know that Verizon is infamous for taking functionality out of phones and putting their own crappy slow interface on them? Sprint is actually pretty open about what you can install even on their feature phones.
When I asked Verizon about installing Opera mini on one of their Razors I was told that you couldn't. Of course the sales guy might have been an idiot.

And actually I think the Atom doesn't handle 720p all that well yet.

That is the interesting thing about CPUs today. The best price to performance ratio isn't always important.
If you have no need for the extra performance don't get it. As it is very few applications will use an I7 well. Most people just don't need 8 threads.

  25. A better solution. on 26 Desktop Processors Compared · · Score: 5, Interesting

What is the cheapest CPU that can playback 780P flash well?
That is probably a good CPU for 99% of the population. Flash is a resource hog and is likely to be most intensive thing that most people use.
The next step up would be to list several games and see what is the cheapest CPU that can play them at say 60FPS at good settings with a $99 video card.

If your a video editor, hardcore PC gamer, transcode a lot of video, or run CAD get the fastest CPU you can afford.
So hard core types should buy I7s and pretty much everybody else should buy AMDs once you take into account ram and motherboard prices.

Also if you are planing on running virtual machines AMD are often a better choice. Intel doesn't support virtualization on a lot of their CPUs while I think AMD does on their AM2 and up CPUs.
