The only real sad thing about Washington is that it doesn't live up to our ideals. So we have a choice of lowering our ideals or to keep working towards them.

They may add reviews and ratings which will be a good thing but they shouldn't limit it to free as in beer software.
There is nothing that says you can not sell FOSS if they feel that they must keep it open source. I would open it up to closed source software as well so you can create a real market for Linux software.
If you have both open and closed source developers you will have MORE software choices. You may have both GIMP and Photoshop Elements. GnuCash and Quicken, and SQLedger and QuickBooks.

I know the many Linux users find the idea of paying for anything to be evil but if you want more Linux users you need to find a way to get more Linux software.
One thing I really like about an app store is that it really seems to drive down the price of software. Look on the iPhone App store and you will find a lot of $1.99 to $5 software. Some of it is pretty good. There is also a lot of free as in beer software. It does offer a way for programmers to make money and offers the end user a large selection of software.
And that is a great way to get more Netbook users happy with Linux and more developers developing for Linux. It could even help FOSS. A lot of professional developers do FOSS on the side. If they can make a living using Linux they will be motivated to do more FOSS projects as well.

I do think Palm will provide some much needed competition for the iPhone. The difference in a two year contract runs a few hundred dollars and the Pre offers a keyboard which some people really want. If you can not tether on AT&T then it is just a big slap in the face for US customers. I hope Palm/Sprint will enable that feature on the Pre when they see how bent people are at AT&T over it. Now we need Android on some networks besides T-Mobile and we can start seeing a real three way fight.

Of course I wonder if there is any reason except for cost that they couldn't add a high resolution time source to each cell tower and use them for a land based GPS system. It should work in buildings and should be more accurate than a GPS since the transmitters would be fixed and you wouldn't have to deal with the ionosphere.

Also Verizon and Sprint are both CDMA networks so no issues. I think Apple will finally have a fight on it's hands with the Palm Pre. It doesn't just have web apps it uses javascript but that isn't just for web apps. Since the phone isn't out yet I don't think it is far to say the app store is crashy or that they have a lack of actual customers.

Apple has done a great job with the iPhone. It is a really good piece of kit. From the predictions I have seen the new iPhone is going to be a minor update. The big news will be if they release a 4GB one for $99 and an 8GB for 149 to go with the new 16 and 32 GB models.

For me the lack of voice dialing on the iPhone is a terrible omission. Heck that is a feature of my $49 cell phone. No stereo bluetooth? No video,? Think about everything that the iPhone lacks.
