"Do you also think that a driver's licenses should be denied to someone with a single speeding ticket?" Do you think you can get your license renewed if you have an outstanding speeding ticket???? They do take your license away for that.
ledgerSMB is supposed to be more secure and faster at making bug fixes. From what I understand the people that forked it had some issues with the original developer.
Yes once they figure out the lock was picked. The system they actually used seems very interesting. My guess is that the people running the trams could control the switches with the IR controllers. Since they move slow the drivers should have no trouble switching tracks or stopping just like a bus driver. So you get the benifts of a train but the flexibility of a bus. What they didn't expect was for somebody to trespass into the stations and get the single codes. BTW the kid got really lucky. Nobody died and hopefully no one got seriously hurt.
While I am not a big fan of McDonald's some people do like it. Then again I would rather go hungry than eat fish or lobster. I think they just are gross. I have a friend that would go hungry rather than eat the best steak on the planet. I guess it depends on what you like.
And just how many years did this work just fine? Yes they do need to make it more secure but that doesn't mean the kid isn't just as guilty. Your argument is like saying a women in a short skirt is just asking to be raped. Or that if the lock is easy to pick it isn't breaking and entering. Or it isn't my fault that I took that money they shouldn't have left it out. Or it isn't my fault I was speeding. They shouldn't make cars that can over 70. Just because something is possible doesn't mean you should do it. That is an important lesson that way to many people seem to miss out on. Do you want to trade your freedom for security? Do you want the government to make it impossible for you to break any law?
"Science is about natural explanations to natural phenomena. ID basically punts, and invokes the supernatural." As I said I have seen no good science to back up ID and that fact would have to be taught. But you are just punting as well. If life on earth created by a creator then that would be part of nature. In science nothing is "supernatural". Science should be the search for truth. As I said I don't think ID is good science but if it is not taught then people that hear it might fall for it. Frankly they use a lot of heavy but bad science that sounds totally reasonable if you don't have a really good grasp on a lot of different sciences. To not teach ID and how ID is flawed in schools will make it all the more likely for people to fall for it. Some people will not fall for it just because they have blind faith in Evolution. But in this case ignorance plus a healthy does of wonder will confuse people. I do go to church every Sunday. I got invited to an ID lecture at different church. If I hadn't had a good grip on physics and chemistry it might have been believable. Ignorance is NEVER a benefit.
"I have been trying to prove that if you don't think gravity is real, and you step off a building, you will not fall. So far every time I have tried this I have failed, but I keep trying to teach it to anyone who will listen (mostly doctors and nurses due to all the injuries)."
You do realize that you are just making a silly comment that brings nothing of value to the discussion. But if you wish then so be it. Again if you read my post your theory would be mentioned in school. They would be shown how there is no proof of the theory and how it has failed time and time again in experiments. In other words you sir would be held up as an example of a nutcase.
"Further, there's no good reason to deny a driver's license to an immigrant. A driver's license should be something which states that this person can drive safely according to the rules of the state from which the driver's license was issued. It should have characteristics of an ID card--that is, a driver's license is fairly useless if it can't be tied to the person presenting it, in the case of a traffic stop."
They don't deny a driver's license to immigrants. They will deny them to illegal immigrants. While I am very liberal on immigration in that I think we need to make it easier for people to come legally to the US and even work on a path to citizenship for those that are already here the fact remains that they are currently here illegally.
"The problem I have is that the federal government is doing it. This is a power that should be left to the states." Well the states don't have to do it but then the drivers license will not longer be good as an Id for federal controlled systems. Then you would have to spend more money and get a Passport.
Well if what you say is true then they need to make the RealID standard harder. I have not seen any good Florida Fake Ids in a long time so the system here seems to work or at the very least make it a lot harder.
When I was in school we did learn that they where other theories about how life started on earth. We learned that some people believed in spontaneous generation like that maggots came from rotting meat. We learned how these where shown to be incorrect or lacking in any evidence. I would have no problem with them teaching intelligent design if they just followed the rules of science when teaching it. Simply that some people think this is how life got started but there is no proof or experiments that prove it out and many of their claims have been disproven or at least had a lot of doubt about them.
Science should be open to different ideas even if they are wrong. They must all be looked at using the scientific method. I doubt many creationist would like the way it was being taught but that is just too bad. If they can get some good science to back them up then let's see it. All that I have seen was really bad.
"I just took a look around the office and all I see is a bunch of fat people checking their AOL email. Your theory has failed. I sit in a cube all day, then drive home to play hours of video games. I am 5'8" and weigh 140 lbs." Yea and I bet your uncle smoked a pack of cigarettes a day and lived to 95. Some people survived trench warfare but that is no reason to throw a mustard gas party. You need to stop playing video games and read some science books. Notice I said that there where many causes. Good for you that you have a great diet and a good metabolism. There is a guy at work that lives off McDonald's and Duncan Donuts and is as skinny as a rail also. Guess what? Studies have shown that active overweight people are more healthy than thin inactive people... So you have half of it licked I suggest you get out and get some exercise as well. Maybe pickup DDR.
"The idea that having a better ID will prevent any type of crime is ridiculous. You mentioned check fraud - doing so under this system would require the government to give access to Real ID data to private parties," No it wouldn't If the IDs are hard to forge like my Driver's license then it will be hard pass them. They don't have to check the screen they can look at the picture on the card and your face! Kind of like the credit cards that have your picture on them.
They offer apple slices instead of fries and milk instead of soda for happy meals now. Is it great for you? No. But then they are not twisting your arm to buy it.
"Actually you can blame them for marketing. It is a known fact that marketing affects people and they market a lot." And that doesn't apply to video games?????
The 386 did have Unix even then. There where versions of Unix for the 286 for goodness sakes. But lets face it. Are you going to spend the money for a MIPS or Alpha to recompile and test a program that you may or may not sell? Are you going to buy an OS that doesn't have any software to speak of and my never? NT dies on those CPUs for the same reason that BeOS died on Intel.
No the benefits are real. You may feel that they are not worth the risk but that isn't the same thing. The RealID from what I read just make sure that the information you give matches the truth. If you have a drivers license you already have given the information. Did you read what they are going to do? " Among other details of the REAL ID plan:
# The traditional driver's license photograph would be taken at the beginning of the application instead of the end so that should someone be rejected for failure to prove identity and citizenship, the applicant's photo would be kept on file and checked in the future if that person attempted to con the system again.
# The cards will have three layers of security measures but will not contain microchips as some had expected. States will be able to choose from a menu which security measures they will put in their cards.
# Over the next year, the government expects all states to begin checking both the Social Security numbers and immigration status of license applicants."
I just don't find this all that Orwellian. If you read the article it looks as if it has a lot more to do with preventing fraud than terrorism. And forcing states to fix their broken system.
I do think that a lot of the changes since 9/11 are not good and a lot of the powers do need to be rolled back. The problem is when you over react to something like this it makes all of your other arguments less convincing.
There are lots of things causing the problem. Blaming McDonald's is kind of silly. Don't raise your kids on a diet of McDonald's. It is supposed to be a treat and not a diet. You feed your kids the big breakfast at IHOP the same thing will happen. Again it is supposed to be a treat and not a diet. Letting your kids play video games for hours on end. Also not a good plan. Letting them sit in front of the TV is also not a good plan. Frankly I am amazed at the amount of passive entertainment we have available to all of us. With NetFlix, PVP, PVRs, Cable, Video Games, and the Internet there is always something worth while to watch or read or play. A kid today doesn't need to find something to entertain themselves with. Combine that with traffic today and all the fears over safety, and both parents working kids are often raised on a diet of video and fast food. It isn't bread and circuses it is Burgers and Playstations. I have noticed that McDonald's is offering some better choices on the menu as well. So don't dismiss video games just because you like them.
BTW if you don't think the techie life style contributes to the problem take a look around your office.
I did read it. You asked what is the benefit. For 9/11 there would have been none that I know of. But there is a real benefit to better ids that can be checked and trusted. As I pointed out it could help with check fraud and any other crime that someone would commit using a fake idea. I didn't say it had any benefits at stopping a 9/11 copy cat attack. You are making a common mistake. You are fighting the last war. The benefits may have little to do with preventing terrorism but then it may. But a good secure id does have some benefits. BTW a 9/11 copy cat attack is now pretty much impossible. 1. It is harder to sneak any weapon on a plane. 2. The cockpits are more secure. 3. Passengers will not just sit there any more. So if you are worried about stopping 9/11 again don't. That is pretty well taken care of.
"But what is the benefit? Remember that the 9/11 hijackers all had valid IDs -- identification would not have prevented that tragedy." Easy it will help prevent check fraud and anything else using a fake id is good for.
A lot of small business don't want there accounting data online. They are often not the most technical of people. Also in the US we have a lot more dial-up users than in many places. You will hear a lot of reasons but the real big one is that dial up is so cheap in the US. Unlike a lot of places local calls in the US are unlimited. You can get a dial up account for under $10 a month in the US and that is usually plenty for a lot of people. It doesn't work really well with online apps though. Not to mention that Quicken really has gotten that market in the US very well tied up. Now if they would just port their code to QT so they can run on the Mac and PC we might get a Linux version for free out of the deal.
Actually for a long time Microsoft wrote NT on the MIPS and ported to Intel. They felt that if they didn't portability would suffer. Microsoft was actually pretty serious about NT on the Alpha, MIPS, and PPC for a long while. The problem was that nobody else was. Windows developers tended to write for Win95 because that was the big market and many users of the MIPS, Alpha, and PPC where sticking with Unix since they felt it was a better server. Microsoft finally just gave up since 99.9% of there users where on Intel. Since Intel and AMD have pretty much killed the Alpha and MIPS on servers it worked out well for them.
Are they any good? Have they managed to use them for controling the DVD player yet? Seems like it could be kind of neat if it worked well. I don't have a PS3 so I have little experience with it. So far I haven't seen anything that I think is really must have on the PS3. All the demos I have seen are just very pretty but very normal games.
I would wonder if any normal matter object could get to that cloud. As you got closer there would be more and more really nasty radiation. That might be enough to "destroy" just about any object that you can imagine. Plus space is big, really big. You can not just fly into this cloud. As you get closer and closer the object would get hit by more and more antimatter. It would probably tend to erode over time as it flies into this cloud. But if an object was going fast enough I would say yes it would make a very pleasant earth shattering koboom.
Seem like it would be really handy to put something like this on a video card. You could use it for physics modeling, effects, anything else the SPEs are good at. Since this is a lot slower than the PS3 I have to wonder when the first hand recognition based games and controls will be available on the PS3. The EyeToy should work just fine for those.
