I hate to say it but at the Elementary level the research part of library just does not have a high priority to me. I am thinking about reading Swiss Family Robinson when I was a kid and dreaming about living in a tree house and fighting pirates. Helping Uncle Wiggle to build a snow plow for his car, or reading the Little House books. I love technology but technology is a tool for most people not a way of life. Yes some of us are tool makers and we love our tools but this has to work for everybody. It would not hurt most techie types to have a bit more whimsy in their life.
Books! Really people their is nothing wrong with good old fashioned books! We are talking about little kids probably from the ages of 5 to 10 years old. Tools? Technology? Stories, adventure, science, and just fun books is what you need. Get the kids in love with the written word. Most of the ideas I am seeing target maybe the oldest age group but nothing for the majority of the age groups involved.
Well since I was replying to this message. "The problem is those area's are in Texas, North Carolina, and Florida.
None of which are known for their overly rational people."
I would say it is more rational to judge a whole city by a few people than several states. I am sure that their are rational people in SF. There are crazy and rational people just about everywhere. The problem is that SF is actually becoming even more hostile to business than before. Of course there is this http://sfist.com/2013/05/09/41... as well.
That is more evolution the innovation IMHO. Component selection is just good QA. There is nothing wrong with good solid engineering and frankly that is what you want and need in the x86 space.
Of course when you get to blades, HPC with custom interconnects, and CPU GPU compute systems you are in a different category and one I believe offers a lot of room for innovation.
I was not saying that they where not a good value. Just the idea of that much compute power being cheap is amusing. 8k for a server is still in enterprise pricing to me but well worth the money
As opposed to SF? I think this story shows that SF is not known for overly rational people. Austin is is home to a lot of tech companies, Research Triangle is home to Red Hat and SAS, South and central Florida is home to a growing bio tech industry as well as space tech. I think you are a bit clueless in this case.
Naw. That is Sf, they are deeply nuts there. All that needs to happen is for Google and other companies to leave. Austin Tx is nice I hear as is Cary North Carolina, South Florida also has nice weather and low housing costs.
"I'm going to go out on a limb (not actually knowing either of you) and guess he wasn't talking about your wife or friends specifically. In other news, we have a black president so racism doesn't exist, right?"
Well lets take a look. "If you're Mormon, girls are very much a minority. They are to stay home, cook, and make babies.:"
1. "If you're Mormon," That is an all inclusive statement so yes that does include everyone that is Mormon.
2. "girls are very much a minority" Well this is just stupid since there are more women than men in the church. He is probably abusing the word minority to mean oppressed or disadvantaged but that is not what it means. The use of minority involving rights traditionally was short hand for ethnic minorities even hence the common term, "women and minorities" when talking about discrimination since women are not a minority.
3. "They are to stay home, cook, and make babies." Finished off with a lovely bigoted statement.
LDS women have the second highest average educational level of any religious group in the US and a higher educational level than the average population. At LDS colleges the male to female ratio is very close to 1 to 1. The church stress education for both genders and that does seem to pay off with more youth going to college. So what he is talking about is a stereo type with little basis in fact. In other words bigotry.
And to your statement. "In other news, we have a black president so racism doesn't exist, right?"
In other news you are okay with bigotry? Because that is what the original post was. It is funny how you use the fact that their is still racism to justify bigotry.
Not a whole lot of room for innovation in the sever space. Case design? Not really everyone uses racks. CPU? Not in the X86 space. Software? Linux, Windows, maybe BSD or Solaris. Servers == following standards. Once you get to the big iron running Power you have room for innovation.
Oh look another idiot that thinks that presenting no data points justifies bigotry. Here is a data point LDS women have the second highest average level of education of any religious group in the US and are above average for the general population in level of education.
You have no idea what you are talking about. My wife has a degree in political science, I have friends that are engineers and geologists that are both women and Mormon. Funny how some bigotry is okay on slashdot.
"Things like the multiple Barcode Scanners, Thermal Printers, Cash Drawers, Magcard Readers, etc. are typically only provided with Windows drivers."
I wonder if Target or Walmart said to the makers of those,"We need Linux drivers" if that would change? Magcard readers should not be much of an issue since they are probably USB or serial devices. A cash drawer should be an easy interface as well. The printer and Barcode scanners are the only iffy one and for all I know the Barcode scanners are USB HID devices. Things are very different when it comes to things like drivers when Target or WalMart ask vs the average developer.
Welcome to the world of embedded Windows. The cost of updating all of those systems would be huge not to mention testing every system with the new OS. What I do not get is if they are running Java why are they running Windows? Why not Linux?
1. Open a business. Do consulting work and custom programing work. 2. Build servers or partner with a company to build servers. OpenBSD is supposed to be all about security. A very secure server OS from a company not in the US might sell well in light of the FUD over the NSA. OpenBSD can be used anywhere Linux can but Linux has the mindshare. Maybe a Canadian company can make a go at secure servers.
True but knowing ones own limits is not easy. Just look at the people posting on Slashdot as an example. This guy had someone tell him that people are using FOSS browsers to hide from the law while hiring murders, molesting children, trading kiddie porn, and selling hard drugs. If you want to see people saying the same level of stupid stuff just get into any discussion of energy policy. The anti-nukes are just as bad as are the anti-climate change and the clean coal folks. You will find huge numbers of people that are sure that nuclear power is the worst thing on the planet and that hundreds of people died from Three-mile island and Fukushima.
Umm yes it does have businesses. That is one of the issues I have with editing Open Street Maps. You have Points and you have Areas. You can make say a restaurant an area or a point! Which is current.
Most people are not technically knowledgeable. I fear that things will keep getting more and more silly as the human race gets more and specialized. In the 1700s is was possible to be pretty knowledgeable about all the technology of the day. Today it just isn't. You can see an example of that here on slashdot when talking about spaceflight or battery technology and some idiot makes a reference to Moore's Law.
That is going to be the kicker. Just like VLIW it will really depend on software tools and support. AMD is supporting a lot of FOSS projects that support OpenCL. Maybe AMD needs to throw some support to WebKit and Mozilla to support their GPU compute systems.
Really What apps?

Well that is how I feel about a lot of "activists" they often seem to me to be more interested in a display than actually helping.

And the tax income would drop like a rock and so would a lot of the jobs.

It is SF. If you are not protesting something you are not cool.

Love the idea of a cheap 1U quad socket commodity server. Got to love Enterprise level budgets.

Many Steno Machines used by court reporters us Floppies.

dart does have a compile to javascript option.
