This radio interview with the gov really says more than the articles...(realplater, WinMedia, and quicktime) here: http://www.wired.com/news/school/0,1383,45866,00.h tml#

BTW: I think this is really a great idea, and although its bound to be misunderstood and misimplemented by many teachers and administrators, it does have the potential to really benefit TONS of students. I'm encouraged by the governors actual awareness that faculty will need just as much training and help (if not more) than any of the kids. Good stuff.

  6. Re:Key Players on What Laptop Has the Best Video? · · Score: 1

The ATI cards display is tuned by default for the laptop lcd panel, but it is easily adaptable to external displays. The reason you cant get all the performance you want out of an external monitor is two-fold. First, the laptop is setup to drive the lcd panel mainly, everything else is an afterthought, which is why the supported resolutions generally arent that high. Secondly, the laptop is designed to prolong batery life as long as possible, so the output strength of the external VGA port is absolutely minimal (which can be very detrimental image-wise to an external device that wants LOTS of signal). To get the best picture possible on your monitor look at your "F" keys, one of them will have a pictogram of a montior or will be labeled "lcd/crt" or similar. Now find your "Function" (Fn) key, and hold it. Press and release the "F" key you found. You may need to repeat this procedure 1-3 times. Your laptop display should turn off and the image should be displayed on the external device only. This will ensure that your computer's full video signal is being sent to the external device. ALso, if you are running windows, go to your diplay properties and then settings, then click advanced and got to the "displays" tab. You will see your monitor and laptop (and probably a TV) set the monitor to primary and the laptop (panel) to secondary, this will also ensure that the majority of signal goes to the external device. The ATI rage mobility card is a very good card as far as laptop cards go. The ati and nvidia brands DO have much more frequent driver updates as well.

I'll happily pay a few bucks for a fresnel lens and a semi-reasonable excuse to take apart my unused TV. Even if the picture isnt that great, it could be used to run winamp/xmms visual plugins at a party. The bottom line is that I think this still is a good idea for tinkerers and the financially challenged.

    #1 It is LOUD
#2 It would probably suck (heh heh) electricity like a madman. (newer models are likely more efficient)
#2 I suspect these unit are NOT designed to stand up to the stress of constant running, or even running for extended periods.

You Sir, are correct. If call-151's friend doesn't already have coax cable run throughout the house this is most certainly the time and place to do it. In my semi-limited experience, a zip tie every several feet helps greatly when running multiple cables at the same time.

On a side note, I did at one time rent a house with a central vacuum system, and with the system came copious quantities of coiled vacuum hose (well, three 20' lengths anyways) and many assorted attachments. If you wanted to make your rack/router/servers/main wire collection point look snappy, you could attach an extension hose to the wall socket and run it to the wire's destination and run the wires though the extension hose. I have also seen CLEAR hoses for sale as well...
