"Yes, yes I would. I'd also like to know about that kind of stuff before it happens, but that's really just wishful thinking on my part."
Me too. The problem, though, is that we're the minority. The problem is that most people want honesty only when honesty causes them to feel better about themselves. Most people are awfully ignorant and only care about their own problems. Read your newspaper sometime, in particular the "Letters to the Editor" section. Either you have partisian hacks saying awful and uninformed things about some politician, or you have grandma complaining about the cost of drug prescriptions, or a Catholic complaining abortions, or someone in Arizona complaining about immigration policy. People only see as far as their own nose. This makes being a politician very difficult because in order to get elected they have to gain the approval of people who only care about themselves or people like them. Sure, everyone says they want the honest politician, but there's good reason why he never gets elected.
I just wanted to give this guy kudos for this project in case he browses around here. I know that here he'll probably get the standard slashdot asshole treatment, but honestly, most of us are salvating at your in car 3D Matrix screensaver:)
See, once we get lots of people with in car computers then we can transmit our road-rage frustrations wirelessly. But seriously, I wonder if he has it attached to his gas gauge and speedometer so he can keep track of mileage, something I'm too lazy to do. Of course, when he comes in range of his house he can have his scheduling and appointments synchronized.
My next project is pretty simple, I want to use my computer for all telephone operations. That means answering machine, voice mail, call log, and of course the ability to get weather information and headlines by calling home. Eh...I'll have to look into this eventually.

But it's a really cool project, something I've thought would be cool before. As for navigation, honestly, a close substitute would be just to scrape the directions off of MapQuest or some other website and have the software dictate the directions to you on the road.
Well, one thing I realized recently is that just being able to use a text editor with macros solves 90% of the tedious text editing jobs out there. Yes, keyboard macros don't sound all that powerful, but their utility is in how easy and quick that you write one up. As you are doing some sort of text-conversion in the editor, you notice a pattern in your keystrokes, you quickly put it into a macro. Then, when you notice an even wider pattern, you quickly edit your macro to take that into account. The usefulness in this is that it's dynamic. Creating elisp functions, on the other hand, is static. There is a lot of stuff you'll only need to do in one session. That's where macros really shine.
See, if we were really elite, we would all automatically know how to do stuff like this with our favorite editor. There would be no Ask Slashdot. There's a reason why emacs is one of the most popular editors around and it's because it saves us from having to do this kind of repetative text work that should be done autonomously.
But we're not elite and I'm now going to learn how to do macros in emacs:)
There are some really nice designs on that website. It would be nice if the design of slashdot was changed away from the puke theme that it uses now. But chances are we won't be able to choose between different styles.

Three-quarters of the first world are already in this condition. Here's a strange concept to most people: happiness comes from within. Please, stop laughing at me.
Absolutely. I get tired of slashdotters complaining about "anthropomorphizing". The main problem is that we have too many two-bit geeks who can't help taking everything literally. Get over it Spock, we love rhetoric, and just because you can't read rhetoric doesn't mean that everything we say is a fallacy.
Fool! It doesn't matter what the public thinks! The public thinks that Internet Explorer is the internet.
What matters, ultimately, if there is a community of people out there who call themselves hackers, and if they have the credentials to back it up.
You have people like ESR and Paul Graham on the web who still believe that "hacker", in their sense, is meaningful. And they're not stupid, they don't go to PTA meetings telling teachers that they are hackers. The word is only useful within a community that respects what being a hacker means.
The only problem is that there is some confusion as to whether slashdot is within that community or not. Occasionally, a few somewhat famous hackers post here. At one time, slashdot was within that community. Now it isn't.

Maybe I'm weird, but this I think would be a cool astronomy hack. I want to buy a big-ass telescope, hook it up to a computer, and search for near earth asteroids and comets and submit it to the NEO (or similar) project. For some reason, I'm under the impression that amatuer astronomers are useful for tracking near earth objects, although I guess the huge telescopes at observatories are probably even more useful for this sort of thing. And that will give me more impetus to learn celestrial mechanics, how to determine the orbits of objects in space, something I thought would be cool to learn.
"In order to lose weight you must eat less. That's it. It is really, really simple. Forget about metabolism, muscle mass, etc. etc. Just eat less."
Its actually more complicated than that. People aren't going to be able to eat less if they are hungary all the time. And even if they manage that kind of will power, chances are that they aren't going to lose any fat. Whats far more important in our food is how it effects our hormones, not calories. What you eat determines whether you are going to be starving or hungary in an hour, whether you are going to be getting your energy from fat or carbohydrates, and so on.
I know we're all techs here, but its about time we stop treating the human body as if its a machine. Its not as simple as you think it is, and by continuing to repeat that mantra as if its common sense is doing more harm than good. If any overweight people are reading this who want to lose weight and don't want to be set up for failure, I recommend reading "Enter the Zone" by Dr Barry Sears (read the whole book). Check www.drsears.com too if you don't want to buy the book. Its a nice diet, you'll never be hungary and its a healthy diet. Simply eating less food is often unhealthy.
"I already saw Fahrenheit 9/11 in theatre, and it was truly amazing. I don't care if some of it was not factual, because the bulk of it is just too damn funny to worry about trivial he-said, she-said crap."
I'm pretty sure this is one of the biggest things that are wrong with politics today. No offense, and you're right, it is funny and emotional at the same time. That makes the film entertaining.
But I guess I'm always looking for more, and this isn't only a criticism of Moore's movie but of the whole damn establishment who go to any lengths to make a stupid point. For a 'documentary', and I hope you see the reason for the quotes, I would like to see cogent arguments for a change. But no one has ever been convinced by cogent arguments. So Moore puts up images that make Bush look stupid and end the last fifteen minutes (or so) of the film with the crying mother of a dead Iraqi soldier.
Now personally, that crying mother affected me more than anything Micheal Moore actually did in the film. But anyone can do that! Its just as easy to make Bush look Presidential as it is to make Bush look stupid. And its certainly possible for some other producer to make a compliment to Moore's film showing the reverse. You could show the brutality of Saddam's regime before we invaded (something that Moore was rather dishonest about).
My point is that Moore's movie didn't make any real points. He might affect a lot of voters, he might even be a potent force for this next election. And thats all you guys want, isn't it? The American people must be too stupid to think along logical lines. You just want them to vote the way you want them to in the next election. Appealing to the least common denominator must be what democracy is all about.
But sure, it is funny. Fahrenheit 9/11 is just one big political cartoon.
Just don't start with Ayn Rand, like a lot of people did, it will make it all the more difficult getting into more sophisticated stuff.
I recommend beginning with the Platonic dialogues, at least thats where I began. He teaches you how to think philosophically while introducing you to the Socratic method. I recommend starting with the Apology, then the Crito, and then the one where Socrates dies (forget what its called), then go after the Republic if you're ready for it. Be sure to get some secondary material, so that you're not completely on your own in interpreting the material. You'll find secondary material indispensible for understanding philosophy at a serious level.
At least, that was my start and nothing fine-tuned by ability to think better than Plato, he's a teacher par-excellence.
But really, intelligence isn't that big of a deal. Its what you do with it that counts, another reason why philosophy might be a cure for your illness.
I just want to thank you for expressing what has been on my mind.
I haven't had cable for about half a year now. Why? Because it was getting to the point that all I was watching was "Who's Line Is It Anyway?" and "The Daily Show". There was nothing else on that was any good, no matter how much I channel-surfed.
And then I find out that these networks have been cancelling all these TV shows that might have kept me watching: Firefly, Angel, Dark Angel, and so on. Are there any decent TV shows now? I'd really like to know. As far as I'm concerned, these networks are digging their own grave.
Also this video game crap isn't the worst. I've read articles blaming DVDs and the internet for lost ratings too.
I bought a season of Dark Angel at Walmart, just kind of an expensive impulse buy--the show seemed interesting.
Guess what? I was hooked on the show. I even bought the second season. Turns out, it never had a third season. The writers, directors, everyone were expecting a third season, and Fox just punted it. So the serious finale left a lot of dangling storylines that we'll never see a conclusion to.
Maybe I'm just on a Dark Angel kick right now, but I recommend anyone to buy the series. Its definitely high quality.
