  1. Re:just goes to show on Gould Op-Ed: Genes' Emergent Properties Matters · · Score: 1

What exactly do you mean by spontaneous cell generation, and it failing? That a cell failed to "pop into existence"? Is this supposed to be surprising? Evolution doesn't assert this.

In contrast, if you mean the experiments that have been performed to generate organic precursors to biological molecules, (think Stanley Miller, of U Chicago - is oldest, many replications to date), then you're wrong, because these have worked, and been replicated using different substrates and they have generated a variety of amino acids and biological molecules (Miller's was within a week, btw).

While there are many postulations about the next step in the origin of life: the generation of a self-replicating molecule, all of them are still speculation. So your claim that we "know the theory of what should happen" is incorrect. In fact, most scientists do not claim to know _the_ theory of "what happened" without generating scientific proof in the form of experiments. So your claim that we could know the theory but not be able to do any experiments to prove it true is illogical, from a scientific standpoint.

The probability that you quote (from?) seems to be for the chance that a modern cell will pop up in its entirety all at once. Again, not surprising that it's practically zero.

Your statement about _one_ cell surviving in the inhospitable environment long enough to replicate suggests that you have a different opinion than the general speculation that self-replicating molecules came first, and cellular membranes and cells later.

Doesn't really matter though, since you're not going to tell me your theories anyway. Mmmm, wow, glad you have that much confidence in them that you think I'd laugh.

In terms of "popping into existence simultaneously," no. This is your misunderstanding of evolution. There is no popping into existence simultaneously in evolution. There are steps and stages, and the organism is a complete functional whole at any given time. It's not the case of an organism lacking pieces of a later system. This makes it seem like the whole system needs to pop in at once. Really, it's just that the systems start out only needing one thing, and then gain a optional part by some mutation. Later, due to another mutation, that optional part becomes indispensable. The process repeats itself, and the system gets more built up. So in retrospect, we see all these systems that we think are "irreducibly complex" when really, they're not.

Plus, just so you know, your claim that "this is STILL baby's play compared to a multicellular organism" is pretty inaccurate. In terms of complexity, the amount seen within a cell far outranks multicellular systems and organisms.

If you really want to learn more about this, and how it relates to the evolution of a cell, try looking in an evolutionary textbook (look up origins of life, RNA world). However, it seems like you're already pretty sure about what you'd like to believe.

What a big deal to make out of nothing? If anything, the University should have congratulated the students for finding a way to have ethernet connections in their room, and then asked them to pay the nominal 24 dollar fee, just to go by the rules. Maybe the administration is just being pissy for not thinking of it first. :)

Then they could have better used the time being spent investigating the students to investigate how to cover up what a backwards school they are not to provide ethernet access and/or to find the most economical way to do so...

I am sorry. You must have been through something awful to be able to see a man and those who love him in pain and say so what. I am so sorry.

I really hope that Jason and his family get through this. And I really hope that you feel better too. I'm not going to tell you that someday when you are in pain, maybe you'll understand, because it sounds like you are in a world of hurt right now. I hope you've found the support and love you need to pull through.

Do you want to know the real answer to so what? Because sometimes things happen that are awful enough to make us feel like not caring, and someone has to remind us that they love us and care about us, and need us to care back. Because you and your voice and your support matter.

Saying so what is sad, not for Jason and the rest of the world, but for yourself, because you're denying your own right to care. And so I wanted to tell you I'm sorry, and I hope you feel better, because that's got to feel awful.

That's really not true. Who told you that? They're either lying or are highly misinformed. Trust me on this - you could do a hit of acid now and again, or a few pints/joints, and lose nothing but your stiff outlook.

Then again, you could also have a freak reaction and die, either directly or indirectly. Before everyone jumps all over this at once, I'm not saying this is common, I'm saying it has happened. I mean, hell, sure statistically, it's rare, but if you're the one in a million, that doesn't make a big difference then, does it?

Being needlessly judgemental and uptight can hurt you as much in life (and in the computer biz!) as any booze or drug use.

How does making the _personal_ decision not to do drugs make someone judgemental?

Being needlessly reckless and trying something just for the sake of curiosity can hurt you, too. There's something to be said for having an open mind, but there's also something to be said for the personal strength involved in saying how much is enough. Whether that's some or none. And that's a personal decision. Making the decision not to do drugs does not make you judgemental.

Computers are not everything in life.

No, and neither is trying drugs. Really!

How are you defining geek? I don't consider myself a geek in the sense that I don't program much, I don't know all that much about kernels and OSes, but my boyfriend is a programmer and I adore hearing about what he's doing and especially when he'll take the time to show/explain how things work. I may not understand to the same degree that someone with 5 years of programming experience behind them might understand, but I have the interest.

All I'm trying to say is that just because she's not a geek does _not at all_ mean that "she doesn't care about what new thing [you] learned today." The best relationships are based on communication, and speaking from mine, talking about one of the the most important things in his life is something I really enjoy.
