  2. SUS is what you want on Deploying Windows Updates? · · Score: 2, Informative

SUS is tailor-made for the situation you're talking about. Assuming you've got a domain in your library, put a proposal together to get another box, throw a flavor of Server 2K3 on it, and get SUS. SUS will synch to the Windows Update site, so anything available there will be available to you internally. Then you approve the patches you want to push, and Bob's your uncle.

Assuming you can get the approval for the server + software bits, you'll achieve what it is you're trying to do - not soak your 'Net connection and still keep a reasonable level of patchedness for your lab machines.

PS - If you're not on a domain, then SUS likely won't fly for you, as it ties into Active Directory and all those goodies.

I support the solution that the original author cites, but making them retroactive is gonna be difficult.

They're done now. I work right across the street from the building you mention, and it's quite gone now.

I'm with Adelphia 2-Way Cable, and they do this. Drives me _nuts_. No IP addy, no DNS server numbers, no _nothing_.

OTOH, the service works, and is reasonably speedy. I sure would be willing to drop another couple of bucks if it meant that I could have a static IP, with real DNS numbers to look stuff up against.

But the Philly-to-DC-and-parts-south run is usually ALWAYS packed! On a typical day, it's SRO until at LEAST Wilmington, if not BWI!

But that's a quibble. I concur otherwhise most wholeheartedly - Amtrak is a pretty nice way to travel.

I personally think the poor man's getting bogged down under the weight of his own complexity.

I just hope George RR Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series doesn't fall into the same trap.

  16. Cypher... on Getting Ready for The X-Men · · Score: 3

Cypher, AKA Doug Ramsey, was killed, as you well know.

They buried him, and when Warlock died in the beginning of the X-Tinction Agenda (I think) they placed his T-O ashes on Doug's grave.

    And that was fine.

Then Marvel couldn't leave well enough alone, and brough Douglock into being, as a concatenation of Doug and Warlock, made into a new techno-organic being.

It's a long, sad, painful story, and not one of Marvel's brightest ideas.

  19. How could anyone dislike Gaiman? on Sandman: The Dream Hunters · · Score: 2

    Easily.

I don't like Gaiman. I never have. It's my belief that he's vastly, vastly overrated. I could tell when he started writing in Good Omens, because Pratchett's otherwise excellent prose started dropping in quality.

Obviously, I'm in the minority here. That's OK.

The main reason I dislike Gaiman's works is that I don't like dealing with cosmic entities and vast melodrama in my comics. I can't relate to them, they hold no interest for me. Not my cup of tea. This is the same reason I vastly dislike Green Lantern and the Silver Surfer, to pick on Marvel and DC both.

And his portrayal of Death _offends_ me. I mean, c'mon! A Goth chick? What's next, a bouncing beeble? I happen to think the visual representation he's chosen is really an insult to the personification of Death.

I _LIKE_ the skeleton-in-a-black-robe-with-a-scythe. It works, it's universal, and it doesn't drag the whole Goth angle into it.

This may also be impacted by my vast dislike of Goths.

Ah well. Lots of people like Gaiman and his works, and the man has sparked a renaissance in thinking, intelligent comics.

    More power to him.
