  1. Re:Yet another unconstitutional law on Senate To Vote On Internet Sales Tax (For Real This Time) · · Score: 1

Currently Amazon, Frys.com, Microcenter, Newegg, etc all charge sales tax. Sales tax is not an export tax on the good. If you actually look at what sales tax revenues are used for you will find that they are used for fund public schools and road repair. UPS or USPS is still using public roads to deliver the goods, so they should charge sales tax. The only items to which sales tax should not apply are dowloaded items which have no physical footprint.

  2. Measure Levels the Playing Field on Senate To Vote On Internet Sales Tax (For Real This Time) · · Score: 1

This bill simply allows the states to collect sales tax according to their local laws on online purchases. This would level the playing field for local retailers of electronics and higher end luxury goods, where people come to the store and browse the merchandise only to buy it online to save in sales tax. Also this bill exempts all firms with less than $1 million in sales from compliance, so that "small businesses are not hurt". Lastly, most online purchases are with paypal or credit card, so it is easy to search for the sales tax in your jurisdiction. I am not in favor of picking winners and loser, but you have to level the playing field to charge online retailers the same sales tax that you charge a local retailer.

I am afraid that Michael Chertoff only made hundreds of millions with the old backscatter machines and needed even more government money, so his company decided to come out with some new units which the TSA will spend over a billion dollars to acquire. The military industrial complex will bankrupt us as Eisenhower predicted.

  4. Gfted Student Metrics are Nonsense on Statistical Errors Keep 4700 K-3rd Students From NYC 'Gifted' Programs · · Score: 1

I don't think it is okay to already start sorting out which students are gifted are not at elementary school age. For example, my son is now a student at Georgia Tech, but he was never admitted into the gifted program because they said he scored too low in the verbal reasoning and creativity sections. He was stuck in the slow classes and lost interest in learning until I took notice and began teaching him myself. I believe that all students should simply be given a choice to taken the "gifted track" and see how they do.

  5. Wrong Solution on U.S. Senate's Big Immigration Bill Seeks Centralized Database For H-1B Jobs · · Score: 5, Insightful

Instead of giving people H1B visas, why don't we just give them green cards, so they have the same employment bargaining rights that US citizens have so it becomes impossible to undercut local wages. Also, for student visa holders who finish school here with MS or PhD degrees we should just grant citizenship for an upfront fee of $8000 so we keep talented people in the US.

  6. Put the Case in Context on Will the Supreme Court End Human Gene Patents? · · Score: 3, Interesting

If you read the case file, the reason this is even going to court is because Myriad Genetics decided to patent the gene for breast cancer. Some Yale researchers got an NIH grant to research breast cancer and they got sued by Myriad for patent infringement. This is absolute bullshit. Most of the information known about genetics and disease was discovered by scientists working in federally funded labs or on grants at universities. If the patent is granted where does this end? Does that mean the small pox vaccine should have been patented and that the WHO was wrong in getting rid of small pox. What about Jonas Salk and polio. What about Tay Sach's disease, hemophelia, Huntington's disease and all the other genetic disorders that were discovered by scientists who did not apply for patents on fundamental knowledge.

  7. Re:FWD.us? on Zuckerberg Lobbies For More Liberal Immigration Policies · · Score: 1

I think the H1-B should be done away with entirely. Instead it should be replaced with a skills proficiency test for all applicants who have Masters degrees or higher in STEM fields. If the applicants passes the proficiency test and pays a one time fee of $10,000 then they should be granted a greecard and enjoy the same wage bargaining rights as citizens.

This is one step closer to corporate control of the internet, the one medium in which the average person has complete freedom over the content. Passing CISPA moves the US closer to fascism.
