Yes, but plenty of corporations still did business with the Nazis including IBM which sold them computers and punch cards to increase their efficiency of rounding up and killing Jews
That is too bad because a space race is the only thing at this point that can pull the US out of this downward spiral where all resources are being allocated for financial services instead of actual investment in infrastructure and new technology.
I mean looking back at history, the reason that technology progressed so rapidly in the 50's and 60's was because of the space race. In fact NASA and the DOD were buying 90% of all transistors made from that time period.
What does this have to do with liberals? I consider myself left of center and I have clearly stated that technology is not a solution. My wife is a teacher with a masters degree and she makes $42K. That is not an obscene pay. Somehow you managed to turn this into an argument to bash teachers, liberals, and unions - none of which are responsible for this. I live in Georgia which is a dead-red state where there no teachers unions, yet technology is being forced on the schools by private companies looking to secure extra taxpayer money. Moreover the parents largely approve of these private companies and support increasing technology in the classroom. The problem is that everyone wants to blame the government or teachers instead of taking personal responsibility and acting as parents for their kid.
Technology is not going to fix the problem of parents not being involved in their children's education. People learned how to spell and add numbers before there were computers, tablets, Ipads, etc. Somehow everyone thinks that spending more on technology or blaming teachers in going to fix education. The problem begins and ends at home with the parents getting involved in their kids education to motivate them to learn. One of my favorite quotes regarding this is "The man who learns only when and what he is taught in school has truly learning nothing at all." The main problem with education is motivating students and that cannot be solved with teachers, small class sizes, or technology. END RANT
What we really need is guaranteed minimum income of $20,000 to all citizens above the age of 26 without a job. That way people will be able to protest the decisions of upper management without fearing for their livelihood.
What the hell happened to the EV 1. That car by GM cost only $25,000 and had about as much range as the electric cars nowadays. We already solved this problem once. Why are we trying to resolve it?????
The traders actually make money on this though. The oil companies will also make more money from refining the oil. It is we the consumers who will lose money.
Ronald Reagan raised the debt celing 17 times without negotiation. GWB raised the debt celing 7 times without negotiation. There have only been 4 balanced budgets in the last 50 years and they were under Bill Clinton.
Democrats have the votes in the house to pass a clean CR as there are 20 to 30 republicans who have said they are willing to vote for it. However, John Boehner won't bring it forward for a vote. Why???
He has had the past 6 months to negotiate a budget when the senate passed a budget and the president unveiled his. The only thing they have been doing in that time is voting to defund and/or repeal Obamacare. They have not even proposed a replacement. Seriously, all they have been trying to do for the entire year is to repeal a law that was the topic of the election, which they lost. This is not democracy. You can't hold the US economy hostage if your party does not win the election.
This is exactly where technology like this will be deployed. They will say you know what it is just a slight inconvenience to the menial tube workers. Then eventually the government and other employers will hand out some no bid contract to some corporation to install these in all places as self identification methods.
This technology must be fervently resisted before it is too late. If you don't believe me, just look at the how the TSA is expanding operations from airports to rail stations, highways, and bus depots.
Compaines are filing patents and then forming subsidiaries in tax haven countires. The companies licence the patent to the subsidiary and book all the profits in that low tax country. The companies then just show operating losses in the US.
How the hell did Apple file a patent on this. This concept has been around in Japan for 10 years. The patent system here makes no damn sense. Now there will likely be patent infringement suits that will drag on for another 10 years. Who foots the bill for all the courts and Justice's time, we the taxpayers of course. We got to change the system so that frivolous patents are not awarded.
The purpose of filing for tax exempt status is if the organization is only operating for general public welfare and not political action or private interests. For example, MoveON is divided into 2 sections. The small local level organization part and the 503(c) 4 part. The NRA operates as a 501(c)4.
By the way America Crossroads (Karl Rove), Americans for Prosperity (Koch Brothers), American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), are all right wing groups and they operate as non-profits.
Please tell me in what way does a tea-party group promote the general welfare that gives them non-profit status. Rather is seems the only purpose that a tea-party group has is political.
I think all political groups regardless of ideology should be forced to pay taxes. They are not benefiting the public welfare in any way.
From looking at the story, it seems like some prosecutor here wants to come off as tough on crime and terrorists to further their political career. This is Aaron Schwartz all over again. This person in question is just some 18 year old who did something stupid. A reasonable punishment seems like 500 hours community service and a $1000 fine. No reason for 20 years in prison for doing something stupid that harmed no one.The average sentence for rape is around 20 years.
The story says that, but it could just be something inserted by the MPAA executives who briefed the author of the story to put some nice PR spin on their actions. And if they really wanted to protect the informants identity, why did they not inform the defense that they "altered the evidence".
No the shit hit the fan and the MPAA is running to do some CYA work.
The MPAA executive involved in this should be prosecuted and receive the exact sentence of the accused individuals. Anything short of this warrants some vigilante justice against the organized crime syndicate that the MPAA has become.
You cited examples of foreign medical school gradates trying to enter the US just for residency. That does nothing to increase the number of schools in the US or the residency spots in the US. To Summarize: People are going abroad to study medicine, but are then trying to compete against US medical school students for residency spots. How the hell does that make any sense?
Why are people always talking about STEM shortages, but not the shortages in doctors or pharmacists? Corporations always lobby to increase the H1B quota, but you will never see anyone lobbying that we need to bring in more doctors or pharmacists to lower the cost of medical care. The reason I believe is quite simple: The American Medical Association and National Pharmacists Association are very strong unions. They even lobby against increasing seats in US medical colleges and even building more colleges.
However, whenever someone talks about trying to form a union for IT developers or Engineers, we call it socialism, nazism, communism. Seriously, we have been saying for the past 10 years after NAFTA and other free trade agreements that only the "low skill" manual laborers will suffer. Well, now they have destroyed the market for manual labor and the corporations are coming for engineers, IT, and scientists wages. The only way we can fight this is if we stand together. This is not about Xenophobia. I myself am an immigrant from India. We need to ensure fair pay and benefits for domestic workers.
The privatization of education and testing once again shows inferior results compared to public education and testing. I have never heard of the MCAT, LCAT, GRE, or SAT ever having these kinds of problems.

I am pretty sure that google will begin just what you describe if Facebook wins this lawsuit.

Well there are plenty of people ready to replace these workers, so I don't see the problem.

The cars that have been around in the past 10 years have had no problems, yet newer cars have design flaws. Who the hell is designing this garbage?

The government has been in bed with the telecom industry since the end of the 1960's.

Perhaps John McAfee should do us all a favor and stay in his libertarian paradise with no fire department and police force to protect him.

The classic Reinhart and Rogoff paper which shows that economies slow with higher debt was shown to be falsified by a grad student recently. They excluded the period after WWII, several countries, and even had arithmetic errors in their spreadsheet. These people are frauds. http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2013/04/grad-student-who-shook-global-austerity-movement.html
You have to look at sequestration in terms of discretionary spending because that's where the cuts are made. The $85 billion represents 12.1% of discretionary spending (source Congressional Research Service). I am sure that we can all agree that a 12.1% cut overnight is pretty significant. Also with regard to the deficit, it is falling dramatically as % of GDP. Here are the relevant articles which shows that government spending as a % of GDP is also at all time lows. http://money.cnn.com/2013/04/22/news/economy/deficits/ http://www.businessinsider.com/show-these-charts-to-anyone-who-thinks-debt-spending-and-taxes-are-at-all-time-highs-2013-4
